Here's That Rainy Day
Wes Montgomery Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Maybe I should have saved those left over dreams
Funny, but here's that rainy day
Here's that rainy day they told me about
And I laughed at the thought that it might turn out this way

Where is that worn out wish that I threw aside
After it brought my lover near
It's funny how love becomes a cold rainy day
Funny, that rainy day is here

Funny how love becomes a cold rainy day
Funny, that rainy day is here

Overall Meaning

Here's That Rainy Day by Wes Montgomery is a melancholic jazz standard that tells the story of a man who remembers the dreams he once had but didn't act upon when he was younger. As he looks out the window on a cold and rainy day, he can't help but think about how he should have saved those left-over dreams. Now, it's too late, and he's left with nothing but regret. He remembers a worn-out wish that he threw aside after it brought his lover near, and he can't help but think about how love can turn into a cold rainy day.

The song is full of bittersweet irony, as the rainy day that the character thought was just a metaphor, turns out to be a real day of rain. The lyrics are beautifully written, and they convey a sense of loss and regret that is common to all of us. The melody is slow and mournful, and it perfectly matches the mood of the lyrics. Wes Montgomery's guitar work here is impeccable, and he plays with a sense of restraint and maturity that is rare in jazz.

Wes was my safe place in Viet Nam, when I needed quiet and peace I would put on one of his records and the ugly would be gone for awhile. Thank you Mr. Montgomery

Wes Montgomery sound is so mellow because he played directly with his thumb: He learned that way because when he was very young his neighbour was mad about the guitar noise all day, and Wes discovered that playing with his thumb and not with the pick the sound was softer. God bless that neighbour and Wes.
