The song "Finale" in West Side Story is a culmination of the entire story, where the characters finally realize the futility and tragedy of their actions. The lyrics "Hold my hand and we're halfway there" shows that Maria and Tony, who represent the two warring gangs, have found love and hope amidst the chaos. They understand that together, they can overcome the hatred and violence that has engulfed their world. They are determined to make the best of their situation and work towards a better future. The repetition of the line "Hold my hand and I'll take you there" emphasizes their commitment to each other.

The lyrics "Somehow...Some day!" captures the uncertain nature of their prospects, but also their unwavering belief in a better tomorrow. They are hopeful that one day, their love will be enough to bring peace to their world. However, their hope is tinged with sadness, as they know that it will not be an easy journey. The song ends with a haunting melody, as they sing "Some day!" repeatedly, showing that their ultimate goal is still far away.

It’s astounding how Maria essentially goes through all 5 stages of grief in this scene.

1. Denial (“then we’ll get away
yes, we can, yes, we will
”)
2. Anger (“you all killed him”)
3. Bargaining (“and still have 1 bullet left for me”)
4. Depression (the breakdown to sobbing)
5. Acceptance (“te adoro, Anton”)

And Natalie Wood nails every beat.

I just watched the remake and it was good but this ending really hits you. The whole gangs being here and Maria's speech with them singing somewhere makes it great. Especially the way Natalie Wood gets exhausted of their hate at 3:46 is heartbreaking.

Takeshi Kujo

One died with love, the other lives with hatred.

That is more tragic than the fate of Romeo & Juliet.

😱💔

Adrian Nicolini

I didn’t read the play. But I don’t care about spoilers. How are their fates exactly?

@Adrian Nicolini They both die, basically.

Maria: Loving is enough

Tony: Not here. They won’t let us be.

That line breaks me every time I see this scene.
