I adore the subtle storytelling detail in the costumes. If you look at Maria’s dress, she’s the only one in red and blue. Since these colours represent the Sharks and the Jets, it’s interesting to note that she represents the mix of both cultures, which is also true in real life since Rachel is mixed herself! This kind of detail touched me so much as a girl who is also mixed. Make love not war is the alternative title of this movie and I can’t stress the importance of this message enough, especially these days. Spielberg is a genius, he even addressed other global topics like colourism and in such a realistic way thanks to the brilliance of Tony Kushner’s script and Ariana DeBose’s acting. This is what happens when you’re surrounded by geniuses in your craft! You get a timeless masterpiece that should have won Best Picture and was better than the original for so many other reasons

It was a fantastic film. However towards the end it failed to keep the story flowing with human choices in order to make the point too painfully clear. Having Maria and Tony act too crazy stressing that they are not in love but merely obsessed with the idea of love took away from the tension build up and the emotional punch necessary when Tony died. It was a great film, but I’m not sure it deserved Best Picture.

Remember Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy not a romance. Maria and Tony are not in love but more in love with the idea of it. They showed that pretty well I think. I agree that Anita and Bernardo needed smth more for their relationship. His death doesn’t hit as much as it should.

Romeo kills Tybalt and even still Juliet is madly in love with Romeo and is willing to die for him. It’s tragic. There’s no real love there. Actually, if you look at a lot of the musical films made in the last 20 years, especially one directed by Rob Marshall, Bill Condon, and Adam Shankman, having the sound effects be rhythmically in sync with the music is pretty commonplace. Most if not all of Chicago, the opening sequence of Hairspray, some parts of Beauty and the Beast, you can hear it in subtle and not so subtle instances. Spielberg was smart to take this technique and use it to great ends. But the end of the song with the multiple mirrors, that’s classic Spielberg at his best because every director I mentioned earlier would have made that shot with a lot of cuts and not just one continuous, beautifully constructed shot that shows everything!

Stephen Sondheim often commented how he really did not like his lyrics for this song. He said with these sophisticated lyrics, this Maria would not be unwelcome in Noel Coward's living room. So what does Spielberg do? He places the scene in "Dinner at Eight", a sophisticated George S. Kaufman play from the 30s. Really brilliant and I'm sure no accident.

Pause it at 0:04 and look how remarkable the color in that set piece is. Look at the yellow walls on the left, the blue behind the windows, the red awnings and how the pink neon lights above them all work so well together. It is astonishing. Even the costumes of the girls walking on the side walk work with all these colors.

This is brilliant. This is so beautiful. It made me laugh and brought tears to my eyes. The acting on this movie and especially this scene is amazing, absolutely on point. In the original version I didn't like this song that much but now I find myself singing this version. Magnificent!
PS: what a shame that Zegler's work hasn't been recognized as it should... Especially if you take in mind how Young she is
