Hide and Seek
West of Eden Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We used to play hide and seek
I can still hear my voice counting to ten by the tree
You were the boy with the fast feet
Always the last to be found
I was the girl who could run without making a sound
And though it was long ago
Though it's so long ago
I'm still searching
The lingering feeling of magic
That always surrounded us there
And then a fragrance of violets and rain in the air
The sound of your steps in the gravel
Smoke from the fisherman's pipe
These are the memories that keep me awake in the night
And though it was long ago
It seems I still look for you
Though it's so long ago
I'm still searching
Last night I found myself sitting in the attic
Going through the pockets of my old clothes
I found a piece of bark from the fisherman's tree
And thought of you and me
And though it was long ago
It seems I still look for you
Though it's so long ago
I'm still searching...
West of Eden's song Hide and Seek is a beautiful rendition of memories and long lost friendship. In the opening verse, the singer reminisces about her childhood memories of playing hide and seek in the fisherman's garden with a young boy. She recalls that the boy had fast feet and was always the last to be found, while she could run without making a sound. The song is a nostalgic trip down memory lane, highlighting the singer's yearning for a friendship that was once strong, but now lost.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the intensity of the singer's search, even after all these years. The lingering feeling of magic and the fragrance of violets and rain in the air make the memories of those days even more potent. The sound of footsteps in the gravel and the smoke from the fisherman's pipe are memories that keep the singer awake at night. She searches, though she knows it was so long ago, and she may never find what she is looking for.
The last verse presents the singer sitting in the attic, going through her pockets and finding a piece of bark from the fisherman's tree. The tree sparks memories of her and the young boy, and she thinks of their friendship. The powerful closing chorus stresses the singer's unwavering search, even when the memories are all that remains.
The song is a beautiful portrayal of nostalgia and the power of memories, and it will resonate with anyone who has longed for a lost friendship.
