Mishra, a straight edger and ex-Marxist, often incorporates political concerns in his songs veiled in terms of personal relationships (as in his only hit). After a troubled working relationship with EMI Records, Mishra was dropped from the label in 1997 and since then has gone back to working with indie labels like Parasol Records. His last album, 2000's Peek & Poke, received moderately enthusiastic reviews but sold pitifully compared to his major label work.
In 2005 White Town contributed the song "The PNAC Cabal" to the charity album "Voyces United for UNHCR" (Voyces United for UNHCR (disc 1)).
In October 2006 White Town released a new album, Don't Mention The War on Mishra's own label, Bzangy Records.
The Story Of My Life
White Town Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
About three a m last night
It's the best thing I've ever read
And though the start seemed to drag
You know the middle really wasn't bad
And the end turned out okay
If I had to edit anything
I spent miserable and afraid
But you know I love the book as a whole
I wouldn't mess around with it's soul
Pull a thread and it might come undone
In these lyrics to White Town's song "The Story of My Life," the singer has just finished writing their life story at three in the morning, and they are incredibly proud of it. At first, the story seemed to take a while to get going, but the middle wasn't too bad, and the ending turned out alright. The singer then muses that if they had to make any changes, they might remove some of the early chapters where they were miserable and afraid. However, they reiterate that they love the story as a whole and wouldn't mess with its soul because pulling on one thread could cause everything to unravel.
Overall, these lyrics seem to convey a sense of reflection and introspection on the part of the singer. They've taken the time to look back on their life and have created a literary representation of their experiences. This reflects on the theme of self-expression and the power of storytelling as a means of both understanding and communicating one's experiences to others. Furthermore, the lyrics suggest that there are aspects of their past that the singer is less proud of, but they have come to accept them as part of their overall story and wouldn't want to change them.
