Trouble
Whitesnake Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was raised a gambler's son
And before I could walk,
I had to learn how to run.
And I never, never ever
Played a loaded dice.
But, I rolled a lot of women
With a heart as cold as ice.
On the run again
Looking for a place to hide,
Everywhere I look there is trouble,
Always coming my way,
Trouble always coming my way.

Baby I'm lonely, I'm out of control,
I need someone to understand
The badness in my soul.
Though I never, I never
Stole another man's wife
But, I fooled around plenty enough
And I got what I paid for.

On the run again
Looking for a place to hide,
Everywhere I look there is trouble,
Trouble always coming my way.

Trouble.

On the run again
Looking for a place to hide,
Everywhere I look there is trouble,
Trouble always coming my way.

Trouble always coming my way, trouble always coming

Overall Meaning

"Trouble" by Whitesnake is a song that speaks to a life of constant turbulence and uncertainty, stemming from a childhood where the singer was raised by a gambler's father. From a young age, he learned how to avoid trouble by running, never resorting to cheating even though he could have. However, despite his honest approach, he still ended up rolling through relationships and leaving heartbreak in his wake. The opening lines of the song "I was raised a gambler's son/ And before I could walk, I had to learn how to run" connotes the idea that he was brought up to lead a life full of risks and uncertainties, and he had no other choice but to be in this situation.

Through the lyrics, we hear the pain and loneliness felt by the singer who only knows how to keep running from his problems. Even though he never stole anyone's wife, he played around with many women, causing him to feel lonely and lost. He needs someone to understand the badness in his soul and his never-ending troubles. The chorus lines "On the run again, looking for a place to hide/ Everywhere I look there is trouble" give insight into the struggles of this person, where he can't seem to live a peaceful life, he always finds trouble around him. The song speaks to the constant struggles in life, even when we try to remain honest and true.

on Slide It In

You talk too much
Never saying what's on your mind
It's written on your face
And in the words you hide behind

I know what you want
I can see what you're looking for
I know what you want from me
And I'm gonna give you more

I'm gonna slide it in, right to the top
Slide it in, I ain't never gonna stop
Slide it in, right to the top
I'm gonna slide it in, slide it in, slide it in, in baby

Sometimes you seem
Just like a stranger to me
But all the games you play
Make it so easy to see

You're looking for love
Though you try to deny
The things you put me through
Tell me what I've got to do to you

I'm gonna slide it in right to the top
Slide it in, I ain't never gonna stop
Slide it in, right to the top
I'm gonna slide it in, slide it in

You talk too much
Always treating me so unkind
I know what I've got to do
To get me some peace of mind

I'm gonna slide it in, right to the top
Slide it in, I ain't never gonna stop
Slide it in, right to the top
I'm gonna slide it in, slide it in

Slide it in, right to the top
Slide it in, I ain't never gonna stop
Slide it in, right to the top
I'm gonna slide it in, slide it in, slide it
Slide it in, slide it in

Right to the top, baby
