It's All Futile! It's All Pointless!
Wilbur Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How can they expect you to work, when they can't protect your fate
Sixty hours a week, but they won't adjust my pay
Everyone lied, everyone lied, everyone lied to your face
The government bails out the morally bankrupt everyday
The minimum wage stays the same for another full decade
Everyone lied, everyone lied, everyone lied to your face
I want it all, I want to see change
Let's overhaul, and rebuild everything
I want a fighting chance, and I want it to feel
Let's burn it all down, so we can level the field
Every billionaire cheats the system to get their way
They got rich off the backs of the working class while they collect all the pay
Everyone lied, everyone lied, everyone lied to your face
I want it all, I want to see change
Let's overhaul, and rebuild everything
I want a fighting chance, and I want it to feel
Let's burn it all down, so we can level the field
How could they try to send us out
Every hour there's more doubt
The lights on, but nobody's there
It's the biggest con, to think they ever cared
I want it all, I want to see change
Let's overhaul, and rebuild everything
I want a fighting chance, and I want it to feel
Let's burn it all down, so we can level the field
Were going to wage class war, were going to eat the rich
We can empower the poor, and we can care for the sick
Let's tear the system down, we've been holding it up
Let's burn it all to the ground, destroy the greed and corrupt
Let's tear the system down
Let's tear the system down

Let's tear the system down
Let's tear the system down

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "It's All Futile! It's All Pointless!" by Wilbur convey a sense of disillusionment and frustration with the current social and economic systems. The opening lines of the song question the fairness of the work environment, where employees must work long hours without any guarantee of job security or financial stability. They also highlight the failure of the government to protect the interests of the working class, while the wealthy and powerful continue to exploit the system for their gain.

The repeated refrain "everyone lied, everyone lied, everyone lied to your face" reflects a pervasive sense of betrayal and disappointment in the people and institutions that were supposed to provide support and guidance. The song's chorus expresses a desire for radical change and a rebuilding of the entire system, as the singer feels that only by dismantling the existing structures can they achieve a level playing field and real opportunities for success.

The final verses of the song contain radical calls to action, urging people to take up the fight against inequality and to actively undermine and overthrow the existing power structures. These lyrics suggest a belief that the system cannot be reformed from within and that only by tearing it down can a fairer and more just society be created.

Lyrics off of genius

I lost the passion that comes with living
Since I started university
I took a geography course to learn the datelines
And maybe use a sextant
But now I just press facsimiles

And you're exactly who you wanted to be
That's what you said
'Cause you wanna watch TV and sleep all day and lay in bed but
You're forgetting that I've got to go to work and eat my food
And pay my rent and reproduce and feed those kids
And maybe use a sextant

I don't miss you
I miss the thought of what we were

This is the part where I shut up and let you infest my brain
Wrap your arms around my cortex, dig you in and let you drain
You'll never get rid of me, oh I'm like a fucking disease
I'll make a home in your gut
'Cause it's somewhere warm to sleep

What was your thought when you realised
You'll never feel naive love again?
Was it pain or was it sickness?
Were you proud of who you'd been?
The shyness waiting for his phone calls
Replaced by apathy 'n' dating apps
You held his hands, it felt like flying
Now he's just another man

You'd rather he was inside than beside you
But he's talking marriage and a future
He's picking a lock he doesn't go into
Less knife in a wound, he's a suture

I don't miss you
I miss the thought of what we were

This is the part where I shut up and let you infest my brain
But it's okay, it's a strategy to ensure I remain
You'll never get rid of me, well I'm like a fucking disease
I'll make a home in your gut
'Cause it's somewhere warm to sleep

It's okay
It's okay

Eat my rent and eat my food
And eat my dues and eat those kids
And maybe use a sextant

And maybe use a sextant

“I don’t miss you, I miss the thought of what we were” is… kinda how I feel about Wilbur right now. the news hurt, far more than it should have the right to hurt considering I didn’t even know him. I don’t miss him, not when he’s done something so horrific, but I miss how I could enjoy his content without any guilt. I miss the thought of what we were.
