Poor Place
Wilco Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's my father's voice dreaming of
Sailors sailing off in the morning
For the air-conditioned rooms
At the top of the stairs

His jaw's been broken
His bandage is wrapped too tight
His fangs have been pulled
And I really want to see you tonight

There's Bourbon on the breath
Of the singer you love so much
He takes all his words from the books
That you don't read anyway

His jaw's been broken
His bandage is wrapped too tight
My fangs have been pulled
And I really want to see you tonight

Someone ties a bow
In my backyard to show me love
My voice is climbing walls
Smoking and I want love

My jaw's been broken
My heart is wrapped in ice
My fangs have been pulled
And I really want to see you tonight

And it makes no difference to me
How they cried all over overseas
It's hot in the poor places tonight
I'm not going outside

They cried all over overseas
It makes no difference to me

It's hot in the poor places tonight
I'm not going outside

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Wilco's song "Poor Places Demo" are somewhat abstract and open to interpretation. The opening lines hint at a dream state, with the singer's father's voice dreaming of sailors setting sail in the morning. This could represent a desire for escape, or a longing for a simpler, more romantic time. The mention of air-conditioned rooms at the top of the stairs creates a feeling of luxury and privilege, which could contrast with the singer's current situation.

The reference to a broken jaw and tight bandage is unsettling and suggests physical trauma. The use of the word "fangs" adds to the sense of unease and adds a hint of danger or violence. The repetition of the line "I really want to see you tonight" suggests a sense of urgency, but it's not clear who the singer is addressing.

The second half of the song introduces a new character, a singer with bourbon on his breath who takes his lyrics from books that the singer doesn't read. This could represent a divide between the singer and the singer's fans, or a frustration with the singer's lack of originality. The line "someone ties a bow in my backyard to show me love" is mysterious and could have multiple meanings, including a literal gift or a metaphor for a failed attempt at affection.

The final lines repeat the assertion that it's hot in the "poor places" and the singer doesn't want to go outside. This could represent a desire for comfort and safety, or a feeling of being trapped within one's circumstances.

Overall, the lyrics to "Poor Places Demo" are poetic and thought-provoking, but they leave much to the listener's imagination.

So great. Wilco getting fired from its label for unapologetically making this record -- the record they wanted to make, just for them to ultimately sell it back to the same parent company and then the record becoming a nearly-universally accepted masterpiece has been a story I will never be able to get enough of. YHF always puts me in a good place.

YHF was a vindication of the "Summerteeth" album. I have both. And they are of an creative arc that stretched between 3 to 4 albums before label involvement.

It is why Wilco is indie now real shit.
