Born in Altamira, Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, Vargas began his musical studies early, attending the Municipal Academy of Music beginning at age 10. He has been a trumpeter and a vocalist, but has also arranged, composed, and led his band, and is also a producer. He began his career with the band "Wilfrido Vargas y sus Beduinos" by recording his first album in 1974.
During the 1980's he had international commercial success with songs such as: "El Barbarazo", "El Jardinero", "La Medicina", and "El Loco y La Luna" (which was nominated for a Grammy in 1989).
Today Vargas is one of the best-known merengue singers in all Latin America with hit songs such as "El Africano", "Abusadora", "Comejen", "A Mover la Colita" and "El Baile del Perrito".

Encomiendo todo
Salvameeeeeee
Basta con los desprecios
Que tu me hiciste
Para morirme ahora de
Sufrimiento
Con tu cariño
Me vuelvan a besar
Tus labios tiernos
Salvame de la muerte que
Se aproxima
Salvame pronto amor
De este tormento
No quiero ser la victima
De tus desprecios
Ya que por largo tiempo
Yo fui tu dueño
Amor salvame ahora
No permitas que muera de sufrimiento
Salvameeeeeee
Basta con los desprecios
Que tu me hiciste
Para morirme ahora
De sufrimiento
Solo podras salvarme
Con tu cariño
Me vuelvan a besar tus
Labios tiernos
Salvame de la muerte que
Se aproxima
Salvame pronto amor
De este tormento
No quiero ser la victima
De tus desprecios
Ya que por largo tiempo
Yo fui tu dueño
Amor salvame ahora
No permitas que muera de sufrimientoooooo
Amor me muero salvame no me dejes
Salvame de la muerte que
Se aproxima
Salvame pronto amor
De este tormento
No quiero ser la victima
De tus desprecios
Ya que por largo tiempo
Yo fui tu dueño
Amor salvame ahora
No permitas que muera
De sufrimientooooo
Amor
The song “Sálvame” by Wilfrido Vargas is sung in Spanish and the lyrics revolve around a plea for love and salvation from a lover who has been hurt and mistreated. The singer encomienda todo, meaning he entrusts everything to his lover and confesses that he needs saving. The first lines, “amor en tus manos, encomiendo todo, salvame,” mean “love, I entrust everything to you, save me.”
The song goes on to describe the pain and suffering the singer has experienced due to the desprecios (disdain) and mistreatment he has received from his lover. He pleads for salvation from the death and torment that he feels is approaching, and requests that his lover save him with their love and the touch of their lips: “salvame de la muerte que se aproxima, salvame pronto amor de este tormento, no quiero ser la víctima de tus desprecios, ya que por largo tiempo yo fui tu dueño.”
The repetition of the chorus with the phrase “Salvame” creates a sense of urgency and desperation, emphasizing the singer's need for salvation. Overall, the song communicates a sense of profound emotional pain and fragility caused by love gone wrong, yet at the same time retains a sense of hope for reconciliation and redemption.
