Poetically Alex Winer continues traditions of so-called "Miserable Rock", established as a style by Steven Patrick Morrissey. Less pretentious and definitely uglier than his inspirer, Winer seems to be more adequate to the story of an ugly boy next door no girl or a boy would kiss. "Morrissey has taught me to avoid writing lyrics in a usual pop way" - says Winer.

Despite his manic tendency to absorb the ideas of the past, Winer and his music could be hardly classified. Outward simplicity turns into a trap. Going deeper one reveals a number of internal disguised levels, a maze of ambiguities and turned-over quotations. A frightening journey through the jungle of a human being's inner world turns into self-irony, water turns into wine. Vice Versa.

Show Morraine: Tall af, very imposing. Always looks upset about something. Always has her hair down like she’s just tired of it all.

Sure, maybe she is tired. But she’s had decades to develop her calm demeanor with magic; it could be better represented.

Just felt weird that The Witcher had a better Morraine in the form of Tissaia the Headmaster. But I’ll give it a chance with their choices for Lan.

Then going into the town quietly was fine for a book that had chapters to set up the story but a TV series needs to get people's attention within 60 minutes. Whilst it would have been better to hold to the secrecy of her entry into the Two Rivers I understand the expediency of pushing her story along early in TV format.

Hmmmm Moiraine would not have ignored Nynaeve like that. I get they need to introduce friction between them. But Moiraine came under the guise of a high born lady interested in stories of Manetheren. She was warm in the books before she was revealed as Aes Sedai. She unintentionally calls Nynaeve a child before realizing Nynaeve was a wilder. Also Moiraine flashing her ring?? Flashing her ring in a small village that doesn't care about Aes Sedai? Also Lan outright introducing himself and Moiraine like it's totally important is... just... wrong. I kind of hope they are introduced differently in the actual show lol but I know that won't happen. Oh well. Still excited.

Can't have one person calling themselves more than one name it will confuse everybody watching. It is dumb but i get that is what they were doing. Beyond that yes, shouldn't be wearing the ring and should have figured it out after the attack because people mistrust channellers in general. so shouldnt be showing off her bling.

what's important is the lore and the presentation of it, not a 1:1 reenactment of story beats

It might not be my Wheel of Time I know exactly, but it will still give Wheel of Time the hype and attention it deserves after all these years. I knew that they were going to have to make cuts and compromises to get such a massive piece of work as the entire Wheel of Time series down to a reasonable run time. Even allowing for detailed descriptions of environment and costumes and repetitive inner monologues, there is just so much source material, some would almost have to get lost in the editing. But this is a little too jarring. Moiraine was specifically travelling incognito because she knows that there are factions within the White Tower that would not respond well to her plans. But here she openly announces herself without needing to do so in an essentially unknown backwater of a world where many communities view Aes Sedai with distrust.

I will watch the first season, and try to go in with an open mind, but this really doesn't do anything to raise my expectations.

@Esau of Isaac Since replying I’ve seen the pilot, as well as some speculation that she was a darkfriend, and if that’s the case, I can maybe forgive this writing decision… and that’s a hard maybe.

What actually pissed me off even more after seeing the pilot episode was Nynaeve and Moiraine’s conversation. Specifically regarding the previous Wisdom’s backstory. The White Tower would NEVER turn anyone away. For any reason. They can’t afford to. Hell, Siuan Sanche was just as poor, if not poorer, than the previous Wisdom. Same with Else Grinwell, she was born a farmgirl, couldn’t even SENSE the Power let alone learn to channel it, and she was still taken in as a novice. It made no fucking sense.

It amazing how many worldbuilding misstakes they manage to fit into 2 minutes. I get that things need to change, but these are big things that destroy the progression of the journey the eamondsfield five will have.

In two rivers nobody should recognize that ring, they shouldnt even believe Aes sedai are real.
Dont announce yourselves! Dont make a scene or cause people to remember you were there.
People in the two rivvers dont grab their daggers randomly when strangers arrive

I'm holding my excitement in check, as I know most adaptations take quite a few liberties from the canon of the source material, so I'm hoping that the main concepts of the book are kept. However, with that said, "Duty is heavy as a mountain, death is light as a feather"; I must watch this show!!

I feel your pain, I read somewhere that the show runner and I think Brandon Sanderson clashed - maybe it's someone else with influence that a novel purist, and I totally get that. I don't mind small changes here or there but let's retain the pieces that made us fall in love with our characters. I mean it Mat doesn't gamble, I'm not watching.

I love the series which I have reread several times and own all of the audio books.
From seeing this scene of the Winespring Inn it is obvious that they will not be following the books. The first scene of Rand walking with his father into town and seeing the
Myrddraal in the road. This sets the story. I have been waiting for so long for this to come to screen and will definitely watch. I hope the budget will be worthy of the series.

@AdderTude people have felt the same way for just about every fantasy book adaptation, good or bad, that has ever been brought to TV. Personally I think it's foolish to pass judgement until such a time as the show has actually been aired. Anything else is just poisoning the well - overanalysis of trailers can cause people to begin looking for reasons for it to be bad, regardless of how popular the show does or doesn't become.

Making a 1:1 adaptation of the book just isn't very feasible, as too much exposition would bore the average viewer. I'm just getting into the first book, and the apparent differences are already concerning after seeing the above clip.

They'll follow the core events of the books, but I wouldn't judge the series on the basis that they've changed or left out details or minor events. Telling a story on screen is far, far different from telling one on a page; there's a unique set of limitations such as allotted screentime, an inability to do interior monologue or detailed exposition, and there's a fine line to tread between putting enough in to be interesting to a majority of viewers while neither being rushed nor so long-winded that it's boring.

Lord of the Rings is an excellent example of this: the core events of the books are followed, but the adaptation legitimately skips entire chapters of the books (from memory) at times and often changes details entirely because it just doesn't make sense to include them as they were written under the limitations of the medium. This didn't make the LotR movie series bad by any means; it was one of the most successful fantasy series adaptations that's ever been made.

Personally I'm actually looking forward to seeing what they have changed because if I want more of the same I'll just read the books again for the fifth time.

Most fantasy adaptations are to some degree; at least from this single scene, it doesn't really look any campier than any other fantasy adaptation. At least from my own experiences shows kind of have a "getting used-to" period, as I found even shows like Game of Thrones to be fairly campy at the beginning.

@jason jones Good points. They have confirmed that Moiraine's kesiera will appear on the show, tho' we don't see it in the trailers. I also read that they didn't want to spend too much on CGI effects. Whether this is in regards to characters or imageries then I've already seen some CGI cities (I believe) in the trailers: Shadar Logoth and Tar Valon. I can't wait to see Caemlyn, and the inner city where the royal palace is and the Stone of Tear too. But that'll be later. 🤗

@Sashimi1408 Book 1 could totally be adapted without taking 3 seasons. The Prologue is epic and would take 2 min. The 4 days Lan and Moraine spent in Edmonds field are already abbreviated in the book as Rand only hears about the first days they were there after his terrifying Chapter 1 journey to town, which in my humble opinion would be an incredible scene to pull people in and create excitement for a series. A boy, his father and their horse and cart being followed by a black clad man on a horse who’s cloak is unaffected by the breeze and disappears at a second look? The dialogue about entering the void, foreshadowing who he is?
Edmonds field preparing for the festival, intro of the main characters all the way to Winter night could be adapted almost perfectly in episode 1.

Except maybe her height, and the lack of the forehead amulet, that was mentioned many times over, especially when revealed to be a ter angreal. Massively important. Lan should be towering over her, they stand out because they are an anomaly, they are mysterious, not because they announce themselves.

@Ellis Hugh First of all, the 5'2'' was specified by Robert Jordan in his notes on Moiraine, it was never specified in the books, only that she was petite and ranging to Rand's shoulder. But that's the tiniest problem (no pun intended) -- and Pike doesn't look overly tall when she's talking to the innkeeper in the first place.
As for ageless, Aes Sedai can grow centuries old and not look older than being in their 30s or 40s, that's what is meant by ageless. It is never mentioned that she looks "child-like", which in my opinion would be absolutely ludicrous since Aes Sedai exude wisdom and knowledge far beyond their actual age (Rand says it in the first book himself), which a "child" or "girl" could never capture convincingly. So I think that Rosamund Pike is a perfect choice for the part. Also, this is a TV adaptation is not a 1:1 copy of the books, like most shows based on series of books, which would be impossible to do since the books are so dragged out; they'd have to make 3 seasons out of one single book and we'd get 2 episodes in a row of Moiraine and Lan just leisurely strolling around Emond's Field incognito, watching the youngsters and the birds and handing out coins, by which time people would have stopped watching that show because nothing is happening.

@Ellis Hugh This isn't the book itself, it is a live action motion picture adaptation of said book/s. I'd hasard a guess in the appearance of Moiraine they are wanting to get the story started sooner for want of time and what fits into hour-long segments of the story>screenplay, getting the Emond's Fielders on the road sooner.
As for Moiraine's size, yes she is petite, but they made Elijah Woods small as a hobbit in the LotR movies (using him as well as his double), they can use perspective to shrink Rosamund in shots if this will be the case.
As for the ageless look, how does this facet appear to you in your mind's eye? I could never really imagine how the oath rod made the Aes Sedais' faces appear when reading the books. It was noticeable to folk and aged Aes Sedai had wrinkles about their eyes if I remember rightly.
I am taking all of this into consideration when I have decided to accept Moiraine as "down pat" 💙

Huge fan of WOT and I've been really hyped about the show, I've seen a lot of good that I'm excited about, the trailer was pretty amazing... but this... well it doesn't look great... Nynaeve approaches with her hand on her dagger in sleepy Emond's field? Is she going to stab someone? The whole point is the place is a forgotten hamlet that is - comparative to the rest of the world - a fairly safe/sleepy place. Nynaeve allows a stranger to ignore her? The Nynaeve I read would have had words with any woman who sidesteps her. Lan walks into a public place in such an obvious and memorable way? Lan was always trying to hide their presence, keep a low profile, his colour changing cloak was a representation of his ability to blend into the background and remain unseen. Moiraine creating a spectacle of her entrance? She was there on a secretive mission, wary of anyone knowing her business, going against the wishes of the tower (Her mission only know by Siuan, she is there to literally find the Dragon Reborn, a quest that many of her sisters would still her for merely attempting. None of this really... fits with the characters or the story, and feels more like... well, daytime television fantasy.

Keeping an open mind because I’m excited about this series, but concerned they went for a dramatic scene rather than let the audience slowly meet the the strangers in Two Rivers. The books let everything play out and we got to learn and wonder with the characters. This is a 180 from the books.

Think of this and another turning of the wheel after all as ages come to pass, memories become legends, legends fade to myth and even myth is long forgotten when the age that gave it birth comes again

First of all, I've been a huge fan of the books for over 20 years and have always been excited about the possibility of a tv series. BUT... I agree, the drama of this scene seems unwarranted and even a bit cringey. I really want the show to be adapted with the same subtlety that A Song of Ice and Fire got in its TV treatment. I prefer the gradual introduction in the books and I don't think it would be hard to do in film format. In the books, there's also the mystery of, is Moiraine a high born lady, a historian as she claims, or something more? Not knowing builds the tension well.

IN a tv show you can't let them slowly meet the strangers. You have to capture the audience in the first episode or lose them and you do that by setting up conflicts that draw people in. Books and tv can't be the same, it just doesn't work!!!!

Too cinematic. If I were to compare the scene where we meet moraine I would make it more like the introduction of someone like Tywin lannister. Naturally she would still introduce herself unlike in game of thrones where Tywin is talking to Jamie who he already knows but still something quieter.

I missed the part in the book where Nynaeve aggressively called out anyone she didn't recognize who came into a room. Lan's grand entrance where he stands frozen for way too long is cringe, as is Moiraine's waiting out in the rain to be announced. Also, it's too early to tell, but Rand is reminding me too much of an Anakin-esque character in mannerisms (broody staring). I hope I'm wrong.

1. The village WIsdom does part-time work as a tavern bouncer now? The neighborhood must be bad if you need to grasp you knife (which you keep on standby, just in case) and demand everyone who comes to the tavern announce themselves at the door.
2. Didn't realize that Winternight was actually Curry Night at the local tavern.
3. Mr Dragon Reborn looks suspiciously like Anakin Skywalker. Let's hope the acting is a lot better.
4. Unnecessary dramatics. Acting feels more Xena / Hercules than GOT. Hope I'm really wrong about that.

Toning down my expectations so that I won't be too disappointed come November.

Wow, this is so different. I understand of course that things will need to happen differently to adapt this for TV, but wow, they've fairly significantly altered the type of place the Two Rivers is and dramatically changed Moiraine's character. She's supposed to have an aire of sophistication and is clearly high-born, but she's also exceptionally polite and respectful to all of the Two Rivers folk in the book. Here she is not that, even seeming rude and to have little regard for those beneath her. I suppose they're trying to give you the feeling of how Aes Sedai typically are, but Moiraine is really not like most Aes Sedai. With the exception of her warning the Ta'veren that she would not hesitate if she discovered one of them compromised by the Dark One, she early on shows sincere concern for the Emmond's Field 5 and only later on begins to have more contentious moments with Rand specifically.

First: I LOVE Wheel of Time, and I couldn't be more excited about this show, I have been hyping it up enough that Amazon should pay me for advertising. I love MOST things about this clip. BUT.
Lan's entrance seemed super needlessly-dramatic, and so did Nynaeve's challenge. Like, way way overboard. Community theater doing a murder-mystery game. Just, so not good. I really hope this is just a teaser edit. Who walks into a room like that???

I love the way Moiraine walks straight past Nynaeve and ignores her when she speaks XD what a great way to set up the fact that these two characters will not be getting along very well. It's a short clip, but it's just oozing with character. Can't wait for the full series!

With the other twitter teasers we have gotten, the actors/actresses seem good at their job. By themselves they are great for the roles they were cast in. But together its absurd. These "great" actors/actresses could do an equally great job cast as one of the hundreds of named characters in the books that match their appearance.

Hmm...its been a while since last I read the books but wasn't Rand taller than Perrin if that was Perrin? He was also a lot taller than most men due to the Aeil blood in him. Perrin was bulkier and muscular due to his work as a blacksmith apprentice but not taller. I also wasn't impressed with how Lan and Moiraine looked compared to how I imagined them in the books and Egwene looked older in this...much older.

The actors for Rand and Perrin are the same height (189cm). Guess they just went for generally tall for Perrin as well, instead of big to the point of being careful when moving.
As for Egwene's age, they said they made all the characters older than the books to avoid the YA genre feeling.

The cinematography and production design are underwhelming. Looks a lot more Syfy Channel “Earthsea” than GOT/LOTR. And the pretty boy/modern hair cuts really destroy what little illusion there was that this is set in another world.

@jason mangen I won't try to assert that the characters all looked the way that Jordan envisioned (most of them probably don't at all), but I will make two quick notes:

Jordan came up with a list of actors/actresses he said he'd love to play certain characters, and not all of them look like the character in the books. This strongly implies he cared more about who he thought would capture the essence of the character than who he thought looked most like them.

Regarding the race complaint I see a lot: The Two Rivers is very much mixed if you read the descriptions of the various characters from it. Rand is noted as having paler than usual skin, and some of the Two Rivers occupants are described as having skin "dark as an old root," which clearly implies that they were not white.

Most of the characters are not how I imagined them. I'd be bothered if they cast a black Witcher or a white Black Panther since it would fly in the face of the setting and make no sense at all, but given how diverse Rand Land is portrayed in the books, I'm more concerned about how well they channel the character than how much melanin they have. Plus, the only Two Rivers character who's appearance matters much is Rand since he's meant to be different (well, and it would be super wrong if they had a Perrin without a beard or a Nynaeve without a braid to tug, rofl).

If you want a description from the books, look on the cover art. Then they remade the cover art again, and everyone was still white. If you don't like the books, just say so.

Basically, it's pretty clear that the Two Rivers is mixed, with Rand explicitly having lighter than normal skin and some Two Rivers characters having skin tones described as "dark as an old root," which implies a definite brown.

@Grace Boyd kind of misses my point. “Another world” not meaning another planet, but simply the illusion that these characters belong in the setting they’re portrayed in. It’d be like making a film set in Ancient Rome but having a character wear a fleece pullover hoodie with a brand on it. Rand’s hair would only look that way if he visits a stylist every couple of weeks and wears product. It stands out like a sore thumb in a village reduced to medieval technology. Even more so given the over saturated color grading/sitcom quality cinematography.

@Julia Moreira nope, everyone believed that Tam was Rand's biological father. Therefore Tam was white. And as you pointed out, everyone in The Two Rivers looked the same. Therefore they were all white. Rand was just the only one with red hair.

Great teaser. It shows the quality (visuals etc.) of the Season. It looks better than the official trailer.
Now, the teaser shows exactly some key points of WoT, that is, how people react to Aes Sedai. But the viewer who does not know the books will be a bit puzzled, but still, the scene lets even a clueless viewer understand a bit.
So it is very well done, and this is how a show should be done.
A show never follows the book 100% because, hey, it's NOT a book. It's a TV SERIES.
If all would be following the books 100%, it would die (as a show).
So I don't care that the story will get shorter or some stuff won't be as the books. Even GoT wasn't as the books, on some levels (in the first seasons). It still was an amazing show (in the first seasons).

Sounds good to me, I want to see the attack on winternight, not hear about it afterwards while watching a kid stumble around in a forest for hours. Also, it's such a minor change to the first few chapters of the first book in a 15 book series, who cares tbh. Won't change the plot at all, just helps with pacing.

It's so weird that I'm more stressed about this series than anything else for the last 6 or so months. I am just affraid to build any anticipation. I don't want to watch it and also watch it at the same time. WoT has such a big presence in my life.

I feel the same. What Brandon Sanderson said was the show will be very different from the books, so trying to view them as two different stories would be a good idea. Kinda like a different timeline, where they lead up to the same end, but the way to get there is different. And I guess personalities and their reason for doing certain things would change also. I'm very scared to watch it, since I love the books so dearly, but I would also want to have the chance to see this show, than not see it at all.

So no one read the source material? Why does Perrin have a beard? He doesn’t grow that until after he meets Zarine. Lan (he’s a warmer, he’s noted for moving quietly) and Moraine do not reveal their identity until winter night, Rand and his Da returned home they weren’t at the inn in the evening. I don’t think I’ll be watching this…

Hmmm a couple of thoughts as someone who has read the WoT over and over.
1. Why were Lan and Moiraine announcing themselves to everyone? Wasn't their mission secret? Such a cheesy intro, and a little disappointing.
2. Why is everyone in the Winespring Inn? Even more bizarre if it is WInternight already. Hopefully it's the day before (when Rand and Tam delivered the barrels of cider), so Rand and Tam still travel back home for the first encounter. Doubtful though, as Perrin here mentions the 'ceremony today'.
3. Where is Moiraine's head chain and jewel? It is a part of her look, as well as another use I won't spoil.
4. Rand is too short, and Moiraine too tall (though I love Rosamund Pike for this!), Egwene and Nynaeve are too dark skinned, like a Sea Folk really.
5. Surprised they chose to have rainfall in the clip. It's a small thing, but another deviation.
- - - I feel we have to lower our expectations of this being true to the books, so we can enjoy the series as it is. I'm sure there will be moments that will excite us! Bring on the 19th of Nov! The light illume you all......

@MissCaraMint Correct. The closest we get to the Two Rivers skin color was when Rand first met Morgase and Elaida. Elaida lifts Rand's coat sleeve to expose his lighter untanned skin and comments that Two Rivers folk does not have such skin.

@Golly I don’t actually remember any description of them short of dark hair and eyes. Considering Manetheren had a waygate and was a major metropolitan hub there is no reason why they shouldn’t have a range of races in Emmond’s Field that have slowly intermarried over the years.

You pictured that because it was clearly written that way. Lan is a massive human and Moiraine is quite petite as she is Cairhienien and they are all small compared to the rest of the world.

@dramoth64 In the books Rand is several inches taller than anyone in the Two Rivers, the books refer to it often and Lan is the same height as Rand. Moiraine is described in the books as very short.

I read the first of these about 10 years old and couldn't find the rest until I ran across the whole series in a PX in Iraq. This could either be very epic or very horrible. I will say that nobody looks like I pictured them but go figure

I really hope it's a part of the promo materials because it looks good as an introduction short clips for a separate characters but if it's really a clip from some episode then it looks dumb. Like "Ok, Lan, as we rehearse. You come in first and stay in such a mysterious pose. They will probably ask who you are and only after that you're going to say your name and then introduce me. Only if they ask, Lan. Otherwise we won't be able to make our first appearance so dramatic". Also, if I remember correctly Morein didn't identify herself as an aes sedai immediately. She drove friends attention just because she was good looking, obviously some kind of a "lady" and stuff but not because they knew she was a magician. Long story short, this clip is ok for a separate promo material being shot in a theater manner with all that exaggerated delivery. But if you think that it will be look cool like "in real life" then it's absolutely not. That's concerning the introduction of Morein and Lan part.
Another thing is when Morein made a hint about who was she. Well, if the show makers don't want to prolong stuff then it's totally fine. The scene itself is good and remind me Arya and the Braavos captain scene (valar morghulis valar dohaeris). But it goes a bit against the fact that Emond's Field is quite an isolated village where people get information about "outter" world with incoming merchants whose arrival is a rare event. That means they barely would recognise her as an aes sedai until she told or show them.

I really like the actor they picked for Rand - spot on. And I quickly get used to Lan being less Aragorn and more Samurai, it fits with his demeanor. Now if Nynaeve just had tugged her braid..

This bodes so well for the series. If I remember correctly, in the books, Moiraine meets Nynaeve on arrival at Emond's Field, dismisses her, and only afterward realizes she's the town Wisdom. Then she and Lan go to the Winespring Inn. The writers compressed that whole dynamic marvelously here.

I haven't read this series since the last book came out but even I know that there is too much diversity in this scene. Everyone should look the same except for Rand. And this town is peaceful, no reason to clutch that knife. And what's with the dramatic entrance? Aren't they trying to be discreet? And shouldn't Moraine look a bit younger?
