Phantom Pain
With a Voice Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My world was turned upside down with the diagnosis.
I saw the change in your decaying state.
You never deserved this! Bad things should only come to the wicked.
And yet the most powerful of killers came to our doorstep and charged in.
It charged right in.
The sirens that stole you away from me
Gave way for the silence in our home.
This wasn't the way I planned it to be.
All signs point to me dying alone.
I feel deceived! How could you take them all away from me?
I'm haunted by the loss of their embrace.
Maybe I'll wake up tomorrow and all will be okay.
Cause I dream of a place where you still remain.
And this fragile heart filled with sorrow can only hope that tomorrow
Keeps you here safe with me.
You loved so much and I so little.
And now that your gone, the I lost fills this hollow heart.
If you could spare a moment in heaven for this empty shell.
I want you to know that life without you is hell.
I've become what you never wanted me to be.
The tears I've she'd will rot the ground beneath my feet.
I feel the pain of your disease by a thousand fold.
And knowing you're in a better place won't ever fill this hole.

I give up, I give in.
This is it, this is my end.

Overall Meaning

In "Phantom Pain", With a Voice sings about the devastation of losing a loved one to a terminal illness. The opening line reveals the shock of the diagnosis and how it turned their world upside down. The writer remarks on the change in their loved one's health, which decayed rapidly despite their innocence. The illness was like an unwanted guest, barging in and taking over their lives. The sirens that came to take their loved one away represented a sense of finality and closure as the silence in the home replaced the chaos of living with someone battling illness. The writer laments their loss and how they feel deceived by the illness that took everything away from them.

The chorus speaks about finding solace in the idea of an afterlife, where their loved one still remains. They describe their brittle and sorrowful heart that can only cling to the hope that tomorrow will bring their loved one back to them. However, the loss feels unbearable as they describe how they have become someone their loved one would never have wanted them to be. They've shed countless tears, and the pain of the disease feels immeasurable. The writer gives up and is resigning to their end, as the last lines of the song suggest.

The pain and grief conveyed in the lyrics of "Phantom Pain" are intense, and the song strikes a chord with anyone who has lost a loved one. The song reveals the darker side of life and how it can often feel like no matter how much we cling to hope, some things are simply out of our control. Despite the despair, the song ends on a note of acceptance, which is cathartic and speaks to the resilience of the human spirit.

I'd like to take the time and say that these are probably the best video walkthroughs I've seen for any game when it comes to getting high ranks. They're quick, they're to the point, you leave good tips, your verbal points are made very clear (I never find myself stopping the video just to try and figure out what you mean when you say something), you barely ever just straight-up skip footage (and when you do it's still pretty clear where exactly you are and how you got there), and what I think is best of all, you make quite a few mistakes. Most other "S-rank Walkthroughs" I see feature the person playing doing everything as perfect as possible, and that defeats the purpose of being a walkthrough since it often leaves you thinking "well, damn, forget this! I can't do any of that!" But here, you make mistakes, they're easily avoidable for anyone using these guides, and the end result is I feel like the S-rank is rather easily accomplished once you know what to do (and it is, you show that).

So, thank you.

ending spoiler warning for anyone reading

P.S. I've only watched all the way up to here, so maybe you do it later, but is there a reason you don't use Quiet? Is it because of Mission 45? Like, you didn't want to write a guide that not everyone could use? Or was it simply that you found her inadequate compared to D-Horse and D-Dog? Because it looks like you don't use D-Walker, either, and it doesn't have the same issue as Quiet (at least, the same issue she DID have before they patched that). I'm just kinda curious.

You can crawl by them using the river without ever needing to cross those guards at the misty area.
If you look to the sides and use the fast roll you could get there faster.
