The Last Man on Earth
Wolf Alice Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Who are you to ask for anything more?
Do you wait for your dancing lessons to be sent from God?
You'd like his light to shine on you

You've really missed a trick when it comes to love
Always seeking what you don't have like what you do ain't enough
You'd like a light to shine on you
And every book you take
And you dust off from the shelf
Has lines between lines between lines
That you read about yourself
But does a light shine on you?

And when your friends are talking
You hardly hear a word
You were the first person here
And the last man on the Earth
But does a light shine on you?

Who are you to ask for anything else?
The thing you should be asking is for help

You'd like a light to shine on you
Let it shine on you
Let it shine on you

A penny for your truth
Will I'll hedge my bets on love?
'Cause it's lies after lies after lies
But do you even fool yourself?
And then a light shines on you

And when your friends are talking
You hardly hear a word
You were the first person here

And the last man on the Earth
But the light

Overall Meaning

shines on you

The lyrics to Wolf Alice's "The Last Man on Earth" can be interpreted in a few different ways, but at its core, the song seems to be about the human tendency to always want more than what they have. The opening lines, "Who are you to ask for anything more?/Do you wait for your dancing lessons to be sent from God?/You'd like his light to shine on you," suggest that the singer is frustrated with someone who seems entitled and always looking for something more, whether it be material possessions or spiritual enlightenment. The repeated refrain of "You'd like a light to shine on you" reinforces this idea that the person in question is seeking some sort of validation or approval.

As the song continues, the singer becomes more pointed in their criticism, suggesting that the person they're addressing has "missed a trick" when it comes to love and is always seeking what they don't have, even though what they do have should be enough. The line "And every book you take/And you dust off from the shelf/Has lines between lines between lines/That you read about yourself" seems to suggest that the person in question spends a lot of time navel-gazing and trying to find meaning in their own life, but isn't necessarily successful in doing so. The final verse, with its repetition of the line "And when your friends are talking/You hardly hear a word," implies that the person in question is self-absorbed and doesn't really care about anyone else's experiences or perspectives.

Overall, "The Last Man on Earth" is a haunting and introspective song that tackles some big themes about humanity's search for meaning and fulfillment. By the end of the song, the repeated refrain of "Let it shine on you" takes on a more hopeful tone, suggesting that perhaps the person in question can still find the validation and connection they crave if they're willing to take a different approach.

This song is like a message to my younger self.
I fucked up so many things, relationships with family, friends and lovers.
Always wanting what I couldn’t have and never seeing what I did have until it was too late, then repeating it over and over.
Depression would come and go. I thought everyone else was to blame when I finals realised it was me and not them.... my world fell apart.
Slowly though, the realisation that it was me and my behaviour made me change.
Things are so much better now, I have a family of my own that I put first before anything, including myself and I’m getting married later this year, so I guess we can all change.
I was diagnosed with autism earlier this year, it helps explain why I was so bad with relationships, the depression, the selfishness. It’s not an excuse, but it does help me understand why.
The line “when your friends are talking....” really hit me.
I’m still uninterested in what they say, unless it’s a topic I love, but I pretend to be interested now, and I seem to keep friends because of it.

This song is a really special one to me. I can't describe it all that well, it just is. It feels like I'm being spoken to directly.

Nothing compares to that feeling of walking with my dog through the woods, listening to this song on loop through my little bluetooth speaker in my pocket as the sun sets on the horizon. It's a form of escapism I've never felt before and sometimes it really does help to imagine I am the last person here.

Just me and my dear Togo, wandering an empty world alone together. No other people, no issues to worry about. Who am I to ask for anything more than that?
