No Hard Feelings
Wolf Alice Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No hard feelings, honey
There'll be no bad blood
Losing your love has been hard enough
Life can be short, but life can be sweet
No hard feelings, honey
The next time we meet

It's not hard to remember
When it was tough to hear your name
Crying in the bathtub
To "Love Is A Losing Game"
But there's only so much sulking
That the heart can entertain
No hard feelings, honey
Next time you come my way

The threads that kept us together
Were already wearing thin
Would we ever have tied the knot
Well how long is a piece of string?
And for everything that ends
Something else must begin

No hard feelings, honey
And we both will take the win

Overall Meaning

In Wolf Alice's song "No Hard Feelings", we hear an uplifting message about lost love and moving forward with no animosity. The opening lyrics "no hard feelings, honey, there'll be no bad blood" set the tone for the rest of the song, conveying a sense of maturity and acceptance. The singer admits that losing their love has been difficult, but they recognize that life can be sweet despite its occasional bitterness.

The second verse takes us through a memory of hurt and despair, as the singer recalls crying in the bathtub and listening to Amy Winehouse's "Love Is A Losing Game" after their breakup. But then, they remind themselves that there's only so much wallowing that one's heart can take. They acknowledge that their connection was already beginning to fray, and that it was unlikely that they would have ever gotten married. But that doesn't necessarily mean that the end of their relationship is a complete loss; as the final lyrics assert, "for everything that ends, something else must begin".

“Would we ever have tied the knot? Well how long is a piece of string?”

Just achingly beautiful lyricism all over this song

Wolf Alice saved my marriage.
My wife and I had been going through a very difficult time in our relationship, a long slow decline as the various trials of life can change people and erode relationships. Try though we did to mend the rifts, our connection had become cold. We were an argument or two away from cutting it off. Long ago we had actually dated in high school when we were 16 and broke up, before eventually getting back together at 20. It was a good break up, though I had a lingering sadness about it, there were no hard feelings, and we went our separate ways. I thought about her often. When this song came out, I listened to it on repeat, and eventually sent it to my wife on a whim (which I almost didn't do as we were barely talking at that point) and mentioned this really encapsulated the feelings I had when we were so young, and it was special that we had a chance to come back together after that, regardless of what happened from here.
We listened together, cried together, and THAT was the catalyst, the moment, that changed our energy towards each other enough to restrengthen our connection and find a way through a difficult period.
Wolf Alice saved my marriage.
