Wayfaring Stranger
Woon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am a poor wayfaring stranger
Traveling through this world alone
There's no sickness, toil or danger
In that bright land to which I go
I'm going there to see my mother
I'm going there no more to roam
I am only going over Jordan
I am only going over home

I know dark clouds will gather around me
I know my way is rough and steep
But beautiful fields lie just beyond me
Where souls redeem the vigils keep
I'm going there to see my father
I'm going there no more to roam
I am only going over Jordan
I am only going over home

I want to wear a crown of glory
When I get home to that bright land
And I want to shout down Satan's story
In concert with that bloodwashed band
I'm going there to see my brothers
I said they need me when I come

I am only going over Jordan
I am only going over home

Overall Meaning

Woon's song "Wayfaring Stranger" is a profound song that talks about an individual who is a "poor wayfaring stranger" who is traveling alone through this world. The opening lines of the song convey a sense of loneliness and a longing for something beyond this world. The singer talks about a bright land where there is no sickness, toil or danger - a place where he is going to reunite with his loved ones.

The lyrics of the song denote a shift from the physical world to the spiritual realm. The second verse reveals that the singer is aware of the challenges that he will face along the way, and he acknowledges that his way will be rough and steep. But he is determined to push through and reach the beautiful fields that lie beyond. It's a reminder that although life may be difficult, there is always hope just beyond the horizon.

The final verse talks about the desire to wear a crown of glory and shout down Satan's story in concert with that "bloodwashed band", referring to the redeemed souls in heaven. The song ends with the singer stating that he is only going over Jordan, the river that symbolizes the transition from life to death. Thus, the song could be interpreted as a reflection on the journey of life and the ultimate destination that awaits us all.
