I'm a victim of a Brown Recluse bite. Some necrosis, but no scars. Thanks to a local pharmacist for correctly identifying the initial rash and sending me to urgent care.

When you see a black widow, you know instantly what it is. Even before you see the red hourglass, you can tell. Brown recluse scares me in that it looks so similar to normal, harmless spiders that are very common around the house.

They're not actually deadly though. Its super rare. I've also been bitten by brown recluses almost 20 times from staying in an infested apartment. It didn't cause harm

From what I’ve read, Brown Recluse bites could leave massive complications and scaring, but not typically deadly. Black Widow bites might not necessarily leave massive scars, but tend to be more deadly especially to children.

I know someone who had to have a heart transplant because the necrosis from the Brown Recluse went into his bloodstream. I'd much rather suffer a Black Widow bite.

An Aussie version closely resembling this comparison would be the Redback (related to Black Widows but a bit more toxic) and the Whitetail (or White tip) spider (necrotoxin). Both very common esp. the Redback. You present your info very well, cheers from South Australia!

I’ve been tagged by the Brown Recluse here in Ohio & yeah it’s absolutely nasty! I did go get antibiotics & make sure I was clear of danger but the nastiness came while it was healing. My knee was literally full of pus around the puncture site. You know when you push on your skin it’ll turn white & release normally it immediately goes back to normal bc the blood makes it that way but since the bite swelled up with pus when I pushed on my knee it would stay indented bc it was a pus sac that eventually began leaking pus, it smelled, just fkn awful until I finally managed to push the pus sac out & the antibiotics did the rest

I was just bit by a brown recluse three weeks ago. The bite was not felt, but the mark on my skin was. It started out as a tiny black dot surrounded by a red circle. It created a welt as big as a big marble. The initial symptoms were itching and a hot burning sensation. Four days into the bite other symptoms pursued; fever, chills, headache, swollen lymph nods near site of bite, muscle aches, nausea, and EXTREME malaise. The black center grew bigger and the red circle subsided a bit. After four or five days I finally went to an Urgent Care facility. The doctor gave me a double dose of antibiotics at the actual site and ten days of oral antibiotics. The physical symptoms are long gone but the bite itself is still visible. The black dead skin is gone and it's healing quite well. I would say I am lucky not to have a bigger scare. My advice when you think you may have been bitten by a spider; seek medical treatment RIGHT A WAY!!!

Great information 👍 I was bitten by a black widow this summer... it was scary! My muscles stiffened up, the bite swelled up, and it hurt alot. It took a long time to heal... grateful to have lived through the ordeal 💙🙏

What I did: Activated charcoal paste on the wound and to stay fully hydrated cuz it can damage the kidneys.... I drank Esiac tea and ate lots of watermelon and took organic vitamins.

I sweat really really bad n got nauseous n felt like I would have diarrhea. My lymph nodes swelled n if I overdid it the nausea would come back a bit. It took awhile to recover but it was basically battling it like you would anything else.
But I got bit on my finger pulling dead leave off of my trellis. My finger was huge n bruised.

I knew what to do because of fully raw Kristina who had gotten bit by a black widow on the neck.

I've personally been bit by a Black Widow a number of times. I used to keep them as pets when I was a teenager. Unless you have a really bad reaction to a bite you will only experience mild pain at the bite location and a headache.

Awesome video dude. I was bitten by a recluse last October.... I don’t think I’ve ever felt worse. Took about a week for my lymph node in my leg to be the side of a tennis ball. Luckily no major necrosis on the skin, just looked like a small hole on shin.

All the brown recluse spiders I've seen were huge. I accidently saved one from drowning. It didn't bite me but it's leg span was like 2-3 inches long. It's fangs were probably ¼ inch long. It latched onto my hand. Thankfully it didn't bite me, it was just thankful to be alive

Ive also heard the the brown recules isnt heavily venomous but that the bite just gets infected and it shouldnt concern a healthy adult. Not sure how true that is though

I've found the widow to be more timid while the recluse has a nasty attitude. I've yet to see widows where I live in the northeast but the recluse can be confused with various stages of the grass, wolf, and yellow sac spiders making them more dangerous in my mind. If you can get those 4 together in a video it might enlighten some people.

My doctor treated mine with antibiotic for 2 weeks with no effect. Its an enzyme not an infection. It looked like a scoop was taken from the side of my leg. Nasty nasty....i put a sopping wet rag filled with salt water on bites since. No more recluse encounters but the heavy salted water sure helps to draw out fluid in bite sites. Its the first thing I do with a bite. It works for me.

My father-in-laws has a problem with a brown recluse population right now. We have caught 4 of them in the last few weeks. They aren kinda fast when they feel like it. I’ve seen them from the size of a quarter to the size of a half-dollar. There’s are also a little darker. The legs and thorax are considerably darker than the part of the spider’s body that has the violin shape on it.

I am terrified of spiders, but this made me feel a lot better about knowing those two species are common around here. Knowing they don't set out to attack me definitely helps my fear of spiders a bit. Although, I still want to do routine bug bombings. Haha

I love holding spiders ive held from tiny ochard wevers and spiny back wevers to wolfspiders, huntsman and a trurantula, even a brown recules and never been bitten. They only bite with you grab them aggressively or make them feel threaten. I Normlay lay my hand on the ground and poke them onto my hand. 😂 i think they are cute.

I got bit by a brown recluse spider and was in the hospital for four days. It was starting to erode my muscles. The doctors said I was lucky that I didnt need to get part of my leg amputated. Also, my grandma got bit by a black widow when she was a little girl and was in a coma for three days. We are prone to being bit, I guess. Lol

I just watched a different video with a college Bug-ologist and she said there've actually been no deaths recorded from a Brown Recluse spider bite. I knew an older gal who was bitten by one. Same old deal - a growing, rotting sore and constant sick feeling. The Black Widow is a different story because of its neuro-toxin's affects on the CNS. I knew one gal who was bit by a Black Widow while she was working in the garden; she almost died and it totally messed her up. It took her about five months to recover, with several months in the hospital, with some time on life-support. Afterwards she could barely walk and had trouble speaking and seeing. She couldn't hold her head up straight even a year afterwards, it wobbled all over the place. Her motor skills went down the toilet.

Watch fully raw kristinas video of when she was bit by a black widow, I followed her direction and did even more, right away I used activated charcoal n made a paste n put it on the wound and bentonite clay but that dried to quickly so I stuck with the food grade activated charcoal and stayed very hydrated and took organic vitamins n drank essiac tea.

Oh my, That poor woman, did she know she was bit? Did she have any other health issues? Maybe if she could have used something right away ....but then it could be where the person is bitten also. I was bit in the finger.

The Brown Recluse Spider is also called the Violin Spider because of the violin mark on it's thorax. The Black Widow Spider is also called the Red Hourglass Spider.

I haven't been bitten by either of these, but have encountered both and I think the brown recluse is easier to get bitten by due to the difference in their behavior. Black widows, at least from what I've seen, tend to wait for bugs to get caught in their webs. The one in the video has already started spinning a web in the jar. I used to live in a house infested with brown recluses and never saw them on webs. They were roaming around, presumably hunting for bugs.

I'm from Arizona and one encounter I do remember well with the black widow; A stack of concrete blocks about 2 to 3 feet from a wooden fence had a sizable web structure bridged from the blocks to the fence. Long story short, the spider came out of it's nest within the blocks. The size of this widow was probably 3 times the size of this widow in the video. Talk about arachnophobia!

Are you kidding? Black widow bites have far greater effects and take a MASSIVE toll on your body. It will almost certainly be the most painful thing you will experience in your life, extreme full body pain lasting days to a week. A brown recluse bite will appear worse than it is because it literally kills cells on the surface of your skin. You can pretty much just go about your typical life after a brown recluse bite, unless of course you get an infection, which shouldn’t happen if you’re treating it properly. It will look nasty, but better than feeling like you’re going to die, as what often black widow bites make you feel.

That 5% of possible deaths he’s referring to from the black widow only occur in younger people & older people if they don’t seek medical attention quickly. I’d much rather have 1 painful & uncomfortable week than the 10% chance of larger portions of my body becoming necrotic and living with that forever. I highly suggest you look up the wounds it can cause like he suggested.

The brown recluse is very aggressive and there are several species of them found in America. One of which has found its way up from south America, specifically chile. The chilean brown recluse(araña del rincon) it is worse then the north America recluse. Would be great to watch your comparison of the two.

I was once bitten by a recluse. My skin in the area kinda melted away for days and the wound took forever to heal up. It literally felt like acid was on my skin for days and days. But I healed up and fine today. I have both of these spiders all over my yard in central Georgia!!!

I was bitten by a brown recluse; I think anyway as I never found the spider. I only know that a bunch of us were binge-watching movies on Lifetime 19 years ago all day one Saturday and I just kept scratching a spot on my arm. It was not painful, just really really itched. I finally looked at it when my scratching fingers were moist. I had the beginnings of a little crater and it was wet with milky and clear 'juices;' no blood. It left a scar about three-quarters of an inch across. The scar is now just a bit paler than the rest of my arm and has shrunk through the years to 1/8th to 1/4 inch in size.

JustSome PYRO aka GaPyro we had moved from an old country home to a new apartment in town . We must have stirred some up , because the night we moved in , I got up the next morning and had two small blisters on my wrist within days it was hurting so bad and it was eating away my arm tissue. Went to the dr. Finely they took swabs and had it tested yup brown recluse. Antibiotics for 2 weeks very painfull .

I've been bitten by black widows 3 times in my life, all while working outdoors and all in my younger days. Hurts really bad and the sickness I can't even explain its so bad. The first bite I had to be hospitalized for. The other two they had a treatment for so I received the treatment and went home but was still sick for about 3 days each time.

Do you think your body built any sort of tolerance? I remember reading a story of a scientist who wanted to see if you could build a tolerance to black widow bites. But after intentionally getting bitten once, the pain was far too great and he called off the experiment.

I got bit by a brown recluse on my hip twice at work after coming out of the port-o-let. It felt like a bee sting. I didn’t think anything about it until I had two spots where the flesh was dying around the two bites. Had to go on very strong antibiotics for a couple weeks

I agree, unless you have a medical condition or are a very small child, the black widow will just cause convulsions.
Like he said though, the brown recluse will really mess you up (necrosis), so will a spider that Americans call the hobo spider.
It's mostly in pacific northwest and comes in hiding in cargo ships. It looks like a common wolf spider.

Got bit by a brown recluse. My doctor was shocked when nothing more than a little red spot showed up and all I ended up with was three little tiny scars. Never got sick. Come to find out my Dad is immune to brown recluse venom and has been bitten MANY times growing up. Nice to know that super power got passed on to me. 😊

Depending on how you wish to Define the power of the Venom you can go either way with what the strongest Venom is. Since one Venom attacks the nervous system and the other attacks the flesh.
But the more dangerous is clearly the Black Widow since no deaths over the age of seven have ever been recorded from a brown recluse bite.

I live in the Midwest and brown recluse are indeed extremely common outside and inside homes, office buildings, storage sheds, etc. They are easily identified by the long skinny banana-cream colored legs, gray-blue-brown abdomen, and that iconic violen/cello on the thorax. I've been living in the same apartment for about 8 years now and ever since about the second year living here I've had issues with brown recluse spiders. I would say the last 2 or 3 years have been the worst. Most are about a quarter coin size, but I've seen some have leg diameter of 2 inches or so. They creep very slowly when prowling for food, will freeze when they think they detect motion or light change, but damn do they run fast when they know they've been spotted. While I find them everywhere, they often fall into my kitchen sink and get trapped by the smooth sides. They also somehow get trapped in light bulb covers on the ceiling after having come in from the ceiling crawl space. I find at least one a week, and encounters occur any time of day and night. I have pulled shirts and coats from my closet and found them inside sleeves and hoods, found them in my shoes, I've also awoken in the middle of the night to find one in my bed under the blanket crawling around my legs. After living like this for 7 or 8 years now, I've never once been bit, and to be honest I'm more disgusted when I find cockroaches than brown recluse, but that's not to say I like having either in my home. Thankfully I find very few cockroaches because brown recluse spiders eat them. Having made myself sound like a brown recluse apologist sympathizer it is necessary to note that I kill every one of them I find. While I appreciate the cockroach killing, I do not want either in my home. I never kill jumping spiders though, those adorable little shits have free-run of my extensive indoor plant garden - their webs get a bit annoying though if not kept to the plant corner. Wolf spiders I rarely ever see, maybe one or two in the years I've been here, not sure why, since they prey on brown recluse you'd think they'd be just as numerous. Not disappointed though, they get massive and females carry their young on their abdomen once they hatch from the egg sack the female keeps attached to her spinneret. If you disturb the mother the 100 or so babies will often flee in all directions. Don't need that in my apartment lol. I have never found a black widow here, but when my brother was a kid he did get bit by one at our old family home out in a rural area, he nearly died from it.

Brown Recluse, also known as a Fiddle Back spider, seem to be more aggressive, from my experience.
The female Black Widow is the most deadly if you happen to be a male Black Widow.... : )

I know you said you didn’t want to test who’s more deadlier. But jack world of wildlife did in fact test those bites, he didn’t die. But the black widow was the worse bite, but he did let her inject more venom then a typical bite would typically be. I would say NO to both.

Just to be clear: The brown recluse is not found in the Pacific Northwest. The large brown spider that we see here - especially in late summer, is the Hobo spider. It looks alot like the recluse and almost every one I talk to about spiders thinks it is a recluse. The Hobo has a hemotoxic bite as well, but research has shown that about 50% of bites are dry. Envenomation has various reactrions, and what was once thought to be a dangerous spider is now no longer seen as such, but caution is the by word.

The Hobo you see is almost always a male in search of a female or territory. The females are MUCH bigger and stay in the nest, which looks like a funnel in rockery, wood piles, dry leaves - or, in your closets. They are often found in the tub. I have no idea how they get there since there is no evidence that they can swim through the drain trap.

The Hobo has no natural enemies in North America and got their name from coming to Seattle aboard a ship from Trieste, Italy in 1925. It is native to Austria/Hungary and that ship was carrying Austrian wines. It has spread to as far as Utah. More than you ever wanted to know....

I’ve been bitten by a brown recluse. Took so long to recover. Thankfully my case wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been. It was HORRIBLE to go through. Plus I was allergic to the medication I was given 🙃

You are correct about some people being more susceptible to adverse effects than others.
I have been bitten by the Black Widow several times in my life, we had a lot of them at our place where I grew up here in Idaho. I would get Over it in a day or so but still I wouldn't recommend getting bitten just to see if you're like me and a few others.
As to the Other little guy? I don't think I have been bitten but I have a friend
Who was and it was BAD.
After He got bit He shrugged it off and regretted it. He finally recovered but it cost Him a lot in medical bills.

Got bit by a black widow landscaping before.
Had me all messed up in the field and I thought it was a bee sting at first. Thats what I felt like. Never seen it. But all the symptons and things ive felt line up with the widows venom. Felt a first initial sting from the bite on my left hand back of my hand under my thumb. Then about 10 seconds later felt an INTENSE sting in the same spot. Then came the dizziness. Muscles were taking turns cramping up all over my body like i never felt before. I was winded hours after I got home and was resting like I couldnt ever get enough air. Felt harsh pains in my heart for about 6 heartbeats when i was showering. Every heartbeat hurt. Really scared me but I survived ! I'm 23 now and was 19 at the time

I’ve been bitten by both many times. The only difference I noticed was the brown recluse has a painless bite, but the black widow hurts. Other than that I’ve had no symptoms at all.

I think Australia has a similar type of spider as the black widow, called the red back, the red mark is on it's back rather than underneath. Also, I've heard there are brown and red widow spiders. I am scared of all spiders, and if they are in my house they get the shoe or the fly swatter.

Brown recluse bites you see online (necrosis) are actually caused by a staph infection, which can happen with any open wound. And black widows don’t kill too often. Neither are really deadly, dangerous yes, not necessarily deadly. The deadliest are the Sydney Funnel Web Spider and the Brazilian Wandering Spider have venom that can actually kill humans.

Thanks for not forcing them to fight each other lol, I used to have arachnophobia for a long time but I just started getting more comfortable being around them and now I can pick them up and handle them without really any fear, but I do still have that voice in the back of my head telling me it's going to bite me lol.

Most of the bites from spiders are dry bites meaning no venom is injected they have to make it so they would rather save it for prey. You did a good jod and telling us about the spiders and I enjoyed your video!

Black Widows are indeed very aggressive when near their nest. I have plenty of firsthand experience with these spiders, and they will charge. I have also been bitten by a Black Widow, my toe, it was in my shoe. It was not pleasant at all, I felt short of breath and had absolutely terrible stomach cramps. Even though the Hospital on base had an antivenom they did not use it because my symptoms were not bad enough to warrant it, as it is very expensive. 11/10 won't do that again.
I really enjoyed this video though, and it is great to see your enthusiasm! I really wish you the best, you're going to have a bright future.

Damn right their very aggressive when near their nest and fast as hell too, the last time I encountered one was when I visited my sisters house after she had her baby and while I was visiting my sis spots a black widow in the house in a dark corner around the supper table so she rushes to get me an tells me what she saw an I knew I had to get that thing out of the house away from my niece who was an infant at the time so I locates where the black widow is hiding I can see its web but I can't see the spider but I know its there so I goes outside grabs a moth by the porch light tears its wings off brings it in the house an carefully throws it directly into the web and soon as I did the black widow came out of nowhere like lightning an got the moth which was perfectly in my view because I threw the moth on the part of the web where the light was shining an I already had two paper towels in each hand and squashed the black widow and the moth. My moth plan did the trick lol and sorry to hear about what you had to go through after getting bitten I bet that was a hellish experience

Definitely! One time I was sitting on the ground messing with my shoe, and out from under the fridge in our garage just afew feet away, came a black widow running full speed at me! I noticed just in time and scrambled to back away and get up, smashed it with my shoe. They are definitely aggressive. Smart too

Im 42 years old and i have 3 children. I live out in the woods or the country i guess you would say and ive been known through the years to catch critters and teach my little ones and there freinds what i know about them the dangers but also the cool things about them.
Ive captured many black widows through the years but the brown recluse i dont know very much about and im not sure if there very abundant here in my area or if i just not looking in the right places. But your specimen gave me a better idea of what one looks like confirming i just havent seen nothing like that around here. Mostly just wood spiders and the common house spiders. I would like to find one some day just to learn exactly what they look like up close in detail so i can know exactly what to look out for and to help others realize hey your gonna want to stay away from this one it can do some significant damage to you if it were to bite you. My Aunt living in Arizona was bit by a black widow. She got pretty sick and had breathing problems but eventually recovered. However, she had minor breathing problems for the rest of her life that she always believed was from the spider bite. 🕷 I wouldn't want a recluse to bite my privates, though. That would really suck!!

All bites from spiders the reaction depends on the person immune system. And both spiders in this video really don't bite unless pressure is applied to them. I'm had both sorta as pets in tanks in my home. Recluse don't do well in a tank being fed, even when fed daily, but widows do well in tanks, mine actually grew in size while in the tank. I only had them in a tank for a week or 2 for educational purposes, then they were released back right where I found them. And no one was bitten while I had either spider.

My old babysitter had a crazy scar on her foot from a brown recluse. I'd argue that it's worse than the widow, just cuz you might not even know you've been bitten, the spider is so small and camouflages much better and if you get a reaction like that, it disfigures you forever, where if you get treated for a widow bite, you'll feel bad, but most likely live and be back to normal.

I have been bitten by both, the widow made me a little sick and dizzy, but the recluse messed my knee up pretty good. the initial bite from the widow burned, but I didn't even feel the recluse bite until a day later when my knee was very swollen and I had a black hole about 1/8 inch wide.

Yeah don’t be scared of them but the problem with the recluse is they are incredibly invasive and multiply fast. You also don’t have to worry about them just in gloves or boots but all your clothes and their favorite place is to crawl in bed with you. They aren’t aggressive but when your sleeping and they get in bed with you, their is a decent chance of rolling over on it and they bite out of fear.

Brown recluse got me and my whole leg turned black and blue with flue like symptoms . They had to pack the hole with 12-18 inches of antibiotic tape and 2weeks of oral antibiotics, but I was lucky others have lost muscle tissue from these spiders and bone infections.

Good video. I got bit by a black widow about 20 years ago when I was in 6th grade class. I never went to the doctor and I felt terrible for days and for some reason I tried to hide that I got bit. I still have a small round scar on my arm from the bite area. Probably lucky I didn’t get more sick.

Brown recluse actually get bigger then that. Also the smaller or younger the spider the more toxic the venom is and it really depends on where you get bit, also I thought the brown recluse could cause paralysis in the body or at least in the area where the bit took place.

I've been bit by brown recluse. Never felt it and no symptoms besides a hole in my leg. Was really odd. Doctor couldn't be sure it was a recluse bite but said it probably was. Took a long time to heal. Like months. Not deadly though. Widow can kill people. (Rarely like you said) Recluse will rot parts but not kill. (Usually, like you said.) Widow more deadly.

Have you done a video on the brown widow? I have a ton of those around my house. They come out at night and have webs on the stairs to the entrance of my house, under the handrails to the entrance of my house, and a few living in my mail box. I first noticed them three years ago and generally only see them during the spring summer months. I have never been bitten, and they don’t bother me. I live in Georgia.

In my teens, I got a widow bite on my hand. I shook, felt sick, and my whole arm ached. It hurt pretty bad when I got the bite, so I knew it immediately. I did not go to the hospital, but I should have. Great video!

I've been bit by both the black widow when I was a kid and the brown recluse as an adult, with the black widow I was very sick for 3weeks after being bitten and after treatment. The brown recluse I didn't get sick but was in alot of pain starting out like a string and graduating into an undesirable pain. After treatment it took two weeks to where I was back to normal, my advice is to try to stay clear of both species

Well to me around here Black Widows don't bother me much since they are mostly outside and live in small dark places where nobody would go near to but the Brown Recluses are the ones that are annoying especially since they don't make webs they're more like hunters, they can even go inside your house unlike the Black Widows where they are more outdoors or also sometimes in Garages, but still better than being inside your house though.

I’ve been working pest control from New Orleans to Biloxi for about 5 years.
I see more black widows, especially in rodent bait stations. I’ve only come across brown recluses a handful of times, and they worry me more.

Unfortunately, we have black widow spiders all over in Utah, I do get scared by them, but at the same time I also get fascinated by their beautiful black bodies with hourglasses. I often encounter black widow spiders at my grounds work usually near window wells. I'm shocked that Black Widows are deadlier than Brown Recluse. Although I've never seen a brown recluse, but I do see common brown spiders in Utah. I hope I don't get bit by a black widow because they are everywhere in the Utah desert and forest mountains.
