Mr Milk
You Am I Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm sure I could make your hand fit mine
If I deliver these custard trays on time
Four-thirty A.M. ding-dong rise
I kiss her photo with the beam from the ash tray light

I'm sure I could deliver better
If I pretended I'd never met her
She said she'd love me sweeter
If we made it to the pier for dinner

Seven months in a ditch for the ring kept for her to decide
If my milk truck's going to be her chariot ride
Four-thirty A.M. ding-dong rise
Morning sun makes my sour heart pasteurise

I'm sure I could deliver better
If I pretended I'd never met her
She said she'd love me sweeter
If we made it to the pier for dinner

Welsh rarebit with a new dress on
If that ain't enough to make you smile

Every Kintail Road kid knows
When she's around then cheese goes dry

Overall Meaning

The song "Mr Milk" by You Am I, is the story of a milkman's unrequited love. The lyrics begin with the singer expressing his belief that he could hold hands with the woman he loves if he could only deliver the custard trays on time. He goes on to describe his early morning routine and his affection for the woman, whom he only has a photo of, kept in a beam of ashtray light. He feels as though he could perform better at his job and in life in general if only he could pretend he'd never met her.

The second verse reveals that the singer has been waiting for seven months for the woman to decide whether or not she wants to be with him. He has a ring kept for her, and he hopes that his milk truck can be her chariot ride. The morning sun, he describes, makes his "sour heart pasteurize," indicating that he is hopeful despite the odds. The woman tells him that she would love him "sweeter" if they went on a date to the pier for dinner.

The chorus is a repetition of the idea that the singer could do better if he could forget about the woman he loves. The song ends with a somewhat cryptic reference to Welsh rarebit (a cheesy dish), and how it makes everything better. This is followed by the statement that in the neighborhood where the singer works, "when she's around then cheese goes dry." This could either indicate that the woman has a negative impact on his work, or that her presence exhausts him emotionally.
