Born Adolph Thornton, Jr. in Chicago, Dolph debuted in 2008 with the mixtape Paper Route Campaign. Subsequent releases like The Weed Album and South Memphis Kingpin brought him to 2012, when he dropped the first in a successful series of mixtapes dubbed High Class Street Music . By the time High Class Street Music 4 and the Preach single dropped in 2014, Dolph was working with major-label producers including Drumma Boy and Zaytoven. Both provided tracks for his 2016 debut LP, King of Memphis, which featured no guest artists, and debuted at number 49 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
A trio of mixtapes followed, ending withm Rich Crack Baby. The album entered the Billboard 200 upon release and included guest appearances by Boosie Badazz, 2 Chainz, Wale, T.I., Gucci Mane, and 21 Savage. One year later, Dolph joined frequent collaborator Key Glock for 2019's Dum and Dummer, the pair's first collaborative mixtape. Dolph's seventh studio album, Rich Slave, arrived in August 2020 and found him addressing issues of racism and inequality in America. Included on the album were guest appearances by Megan Thee Stallion, Key Glock, and G Herbo. In 2021, Dolph and Glock reunited for Dum and Dummer 2, followed promptly by PAPER ROUTE iLLUMINATi, a showcase album for Dolph's Paper Route Empire label. Yeah
Skrrt skrrt, skrrt, uh
Pull up foreigns back to back, back to back, back to back to back
And hop out with them racks, with them racks, yeah, with them big old racks
Ay, shout out to my set, to my set, you see it around my neck
Yeah, bitch, we like to flex, we like to flex, we ball, don't break a sweat
Yeah, all these damn dead presidents, I'm gettin' too much, it's scarin' me
Fuck these hoes, just let 'em be, can't let 'em get the best of me
Bitch, I got the recipe, can't no nigga compare to me
Yeah, all this water water on me, I might go join the swimming team
I got dough, Krispy Kreme
Fresh to death, crispy clean
Bitch I smoke Christmas trees
Got them lumps in my jeans
Diamonds jumping, trampoline
Uh, all you hear is bling (bling)
Ball so hard, they think we cheatin'
Yeah, yeah, yeah, you see it
We pull up foreigns back to back, back to back, back to back to back
And hop out with them racks, with them racks, yeah, with them big old racks
Ay, shout out to my set, to my set, you see it around my neck
Yeah, bitch, we like to flex, we like to flex, we ball, don't break a sweat
We pull up back to back, back to back to back to back to back
No, I don't play fair, shit 'round my neck jumpin' like jumping jacks
All these bitches swear that they love me, bitch, you just love these stacks
Dolph come on the radio, your girl gon' turn it up to the max
Paper Route, Paper Route, Paper Route (uh)
Motherfuckin' business, lil' nigga (uh)
Fuck this rap shit, got some homeboys down the road doin' life sentence
Lil' nigga (free my dawgs, free my dawgs)
I never played tennis but I got racks (racks)
Eight stacks just for a backpack (racks)
See some fuck niggas, then blatt blatt (blatt blatt)
Blatt blatt blatt blatt (ay)
Lake Michigan on my wrist (flooded)
Mississippi river on my neck (flooded)
Went to hollywood just to go flex (it's Dolph)
I took his bitch, made her my pet (bitch)
I wish all of my old hoes the best (fuck y'all)
Me and Tray-Tray on a jet (bitch)
Blue Power Ranger on his chest, hah, blessed
Pull up foreigns back to back, back to back, back to back to back
And hop out with them racks, with them racks, yeah, with them big old racks
Ay, shout out to my set, to my set, you see it around my neck
Yeah, bitch, we like to flex, we like to flex, we ball, don't break a sweat
In "Back to Back," Young Dolph and Key Glock explore how their wealth and success have enabled them to live lives of luxury and excess, complete with foreign cars, racks of cash, and diamond-covered jewelry. They proudly display these items and their allegiance to their crew, as evidenced by their shoutouts to their sets, which are represented by the chains around their necks. The repetition of "back to back" throughout the song emphasizes the idea that they are unstoppable and invincible, able to roll up to any situation with their impressive assets and emerge victorious.
The lyrics also touch upon Dolph and Glock's relative lack of concern for the romantic interests of women who are interested in their wealth. They view these women as simply trying to get access to their money, asserting that they wouldn't let these women get the best of them. They seem to see their wealth as a way of distancing themselves from others rather than as something that makes them more approachable or connected. Yet despite these hard-edged themes, the song is ultimately an upbeat celebration of Dolph and Glock's wealth, success, and dominance.
