The band released their debut self-titled album, Young the Giant, on 25 January 2011, which was preceded by a digital-only release in October 2010. The first single, "My Body," reached #5 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart, and a second single, "Cough Syrup," reached #3 on the same chart.
Previously, the band was known as The Jakes. They released a 7 song EP, Shake My Hand, in 2008, which including two songs ("Garands" and "Cough Syrup") now on the current self-titled album Young the Giant.

The opening line in Young the Giant's song It's About Time, "All the kids are throwing sticks," seems like a nonsensical phrase at first, but it sets the tone for the rest of the song's chaotic lyrics. The second line "Politics, nights on the wire" could be interpreted as a reference to the constant barrage of political news and commentary that we're exposed to through social media and other outlets. The lines "Born to be angry, grip of the vice, click on the trigger, girl, sip wine on ice" seem to convey a sense of recklessness and a "live fast, die young" mentality that many young people have in today's world.
The chorus of the song, "It's about time, best to rewind, you better blow, pistols, pistols, pistols," is a call to action for the listener to take charge of their life and make changes. The lines "Lights low, go on baby go, it's a bad time, I'm on a tight rope, don't go oh go" evoke a sense of urgency and danger, as if the singer is caught in a dangerous situation and doesn't know how to get out.
In the second half of the song, the lyrics become more abstract and difficult to decipher. The line "All the years of paradise, paradigms paralyze us, you're crazy" seems to suggest that the world we live in, with all its luxuries and excesses, has made us complacent and unable to take action.
