At a very young age, Yuri showed artistic interest and she was accepted to a famous Russian ballet. However, she wasn't allowed to join because her parents were afraid of the prospect of little Yuri living in a foreign country.
When Yuri was 12, she participated in two famous Mexican television children's shows for Televisa, including the Cepillin show.
In the late 1970s, she released her first album and represented Mexico in the Festival Oti, reaching second place and winning an award as the best newcomer to the contest. In 1980, she was signed to a contract by Gamma Records, and her career took off, becoming widely known in Spain, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Argentina, and many other hispanic countries. But before she gained international superstar status, in 1982, she participated again in the Festival OTI, earning a fourth place.
During the rest of the 1980s, Yuri's albums often reached the top, earning her over 100 gold albums in Mexico. One of Yuri's most memorable hits of the late 1980s is the disco-styled "Que Te Pasa."
In 1994, Yuri and Chayanne were the stars of the Volver a Empezar telenovela, and in 1995, she married a Chilean musician. Later, she became a born-again Christian and has made Christian albums. Although there was some controversy as she decided to sing non Christian music again.
In 2005, she was chosen to host the new TV season of a talent contest for newcoming singers, Objetivo Fama that began in 2004.
Yuri was a judge on the second season of Cantando Por un Sueño. She also was a judge during its first season and performed several times on the show.
In 2006, Yuri released an album with a Mexican singer, Mijares, called Acompañame. Its title track, Acompañame, is a sentimental romantic ballad.
Many call Yuri "La Madonna Mexicana," i.e. "The Mexican Madonna" (although this characterization has also been applied to Gloria Trevi.)

The lyrics of Yuri's song Perdida depict a person's deep longing for their lost love. The first stanza begins with the singer reminiscing about the nights they spent together, where they can't help but think about the sensuous shadows that surrounded them. They then foolishly try to recapture the pleasure of their lover's masterful touch. But when they realize they are without their partner's skin, they come to the crushing realization that without their love, they are only half of themselves. They can't sleep, and nothing feels important anymore.
In the second stanza, the singer discusses how they can no longer see themselves in their lover's eyes, and where they used to belong, there is now a void. They live a life that is superficial and fake, but when the morning comes and the darkness fades, they finally allow themselves to remember without the agonizing pain. They question where they lost their love and how it all happened. They are lost without their love and continue to hold onto the hope of finding peace.
Overall, the lyrics of Perdida describe the deep pain of losing someone dear, the longing that comes with it, and the desire to find peace after the heartbreak. The melancholy tune accompanied by Yuri's emotional vocals heightens the emotions of the lyrics and manages to capture effectively the depth of the emotions of the singer.

Sin duda, uno de los mejores trabajos de Yuri, para mi gusto personal (Soy libre y Obsesiones) son mis discos favoritos de toda la vida, además de haber marcado una etapa inolvidable de mi vida (años 90, 91 y 92), aquí en Chile, este disco fue un exitaso y tuvo muchos singles, en las radios sonaron al menos siete canciones: "decir adios, así es la vida, poligamia, nadie va a extrañarte más, para quererte más, la mujer que soy, como te amé".
