I Can't Explain
Yvonne Elliman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I got a feeling inside
It's a certain kind
I feel hot and cold
Deep down in my soul
I said I can't explain
I'm feeling good enough baby
I'm dizzy in my head
And I'm feeling blue
Things you say but maybe they're true
Getting funny dreams again and again
I know what it means but
I can't explain
I think it's love
I'm trying to say to you
When I feel blue
But I can't explain (can't explain)
Yeah hear what I say boy (can't explain)
I'm dizzy in the head
And I'm feeling bad
Things you say got me real mad
Getting funny dreams again and again
I know what it means but
I can't explain
I think it's love
I'm trying to say to you
When I feel blue
But I can't explain (can't explain)
Well give me one more chance (can't explain)
I'm dizzy in the head
And I'm feeling bad
Things you say got me real mad
Getting funny dreams again and again
I know what it means but
I can't explain
I think it's love
I'm trying to say to you
When I feel blue

But I can't explain (can't explain)
Just hear what I say boy (can't explain)

Overall Meaning

Yvonne Elliman's song "I Can't Explain" portrays a sense of confusion and inadequacy to express one's innermost feelings. The singer expresses feeling hot and cold deep down in their soul, making them dizzy in their head and feeling blue. They confess that there's a certain kind of feeling that they're unable to explain despite feeling good enough to want to share it. The things people say are possibly true, and they keep having funny dreams that they understand but still can't explain. The singer concludes that it's probably love but is still unable to communicate it effectively. They ask for one more chance to get through to the person they're addressing, but the words fail to come.

The central theme in "I Can't Explain" is the struggle to communicate one's feelings, which is a universally relatable subject. It speaks of a situation where one wants to express their love but is unable to find the right words or manner to do so. The lyrics' structure creates a feeling of helplessness, which portrays the singer's plight, unable to reach through to the person they love. The song's repetitive nature keeps emphasizing the central theme.

Fantastic version of the Who classic. I am a Bowie fan too, and this is just as good as his cover too. :-)

Fantastic! I know the amazing original by The Who and Bowie's stupendous 1973 cover, but this is bloody marvellous too. Didn't know Yvonne could be such a rock, who, that voice!

I used to love playing this as a DJ on midnight shift at Far East Okinawa in the early 70s.

I first heard this on Radio Kaleidoscope, a london land based pirate station. It was a Bank Holiday Monday afternoon. Such happy memories. Thank you for posting this song.

So shocked to find this, I was lent it by my big sisters boy friend 37 years ago, he and I were big who fans, I think she used to be a backing singer for Eric Clapton?
