As with many musicians back in his younger days, he was first influenced by rock and roll; however, at the age of 20, his music took a more Northeastern Brazilian approach (forro, folk). Zé Ramalho's lyrics however, are very influenced by the socio-economic difficulties faced by the average Brazilian.
In 1975, he recorded his first album, Paêbirú along with Lula Côrtes through the label Rozenblit. Today the copies from this very rare vinyl are highly-priced in the international collector's market.

No nordeste brasileiro
Algumas sociedades lutavam pelo dinheiro
Que vendiam pelas terras
Coronéis em pés-de-guerra
Beatos e cangaceiros
E correr da volante
Que quer me pegar
Na memória da vingança
Um desejo de menino
Um cavaleiro do diabo
Corre atrás do seu destino
Condenado em sua terra
Coronéis em pés-de-guerra
Beatos e cangaceiros
E correr da volante
No meio da noite/no meio da caatinga
Que quer me pegar
The lyrics of "Cavalos do cão" by Zé Ramalho describe the social and political tensions in the Northeast of Brazil during the 1930s. The society was divided into different groups that were fighting for money and power. On one side, there were the rich landowners, known as coronéis, who would engage in disputes and wars. On the other side, there were the religious zealots, called beatos, and the bandits, known as cangaceiros, who were fighting for their cause. The singer of the song is caught in the middle of this conflict, constantly running from the "volante", a group of law enforcement officers who are chasing him through the night and the caatinga, which is the arid and rugged terrain of the Northeast.
The singer is haunted by the memory of vengeance, and he seeks his destiny by riding on the back of a "cavaleiro do diabo", a devil's horseman. He is condemned in his own land, and the violence and injustice seem to follow him everywhere he goes. The lyrics highlight the harsh reality of life in the Northeast of Brazil during this period, where poverty, violence, and inequality were rampant. Through its vivid imagery and poetic language, "Cavalos do cão" captures the spirit of resilience and survival that defined the people of the region.
