Zager & Evans are only known for their immensely popular song In the Year 2525 (Exordium And Terminus), written by Rick Evans. It hit number one on the UK chart in 1969. Coincidentally, it was number one on 20 July 1969 in USA, the date of the first manned moon landing by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, and spent six weeks on the Billboard Top 40. It was nominated for a special Hugo Award that same year.
The band signed with RCA records, who claimed they were "The Next Big Thing", but follow-up singles, such as "Mr. Turnkey", went unnoticed by the public.

Ten years old
Waitin' in my room for him
To come home
And I just knew
He'd be so mad
Though I begged my mother not to, she told my dad
There was no denying I let him down
He put his arms around me and said...
In the sunlight or the rain
Brightest nights or darkest days
I'll always feel the same way
Whatever road you may be on
Know you're never too far gone
My love is there wherever you may be
Just remember that you'll always be my baby
There I was
Twenty-one
Oh, I was so ashamed
Of what I'd done
On a country road
Parked one night
Oh, it started out so innocent
Crossed the line
There was no denying
I let God down
But instead of being angry
He let his love surround me and I heard...
In the sunlight or the rain
Brightest nights or darkest days
I'll always feel the same way
Whatever road you may be on
Know you're never too far gone
My love is there wherever you may be
Just remember that you'll always be my baby
There he is
My little man
I'm sure he'll get in trouble every now and then
And I pray to God that when he does
I'll be just as understanding as my father was
'Cause the last thing that I wanna do is let him down
So instead of being angry, I'm gonna throw my arms around him
And I'll say in the sunlight or the rain
Brightest nights or darkest days
I'll always feel the same way
Whatever road you may be on
Know you're never too far gone
My love is there wherever you may be
Just remember that you'll always be my baby
Be my baby
The lyrics to Zager & Evans's song Be My Lady tell the story of a father's unconditional love for his child, despite the mistakes and shortcomings that his child may face. The song starts with a ten-year-old child waiting for his father to come home, knowing that he has disappointed him. However, instead of being angry, the father chooses to show love and support for his child, telling him that he will always be there for him, no matter what road he may be on. The song progresses as the child grows up and faces more challenges, including a mistake that caused shame for him. However, again, the father's love is there to support and comfort him.
The last verse is the child grown up with a child of his own, and he hopes to be like his father, understanding and accepting of his own child's mistakes. The song's message is clear: no matter what happens in life, there will always be someone who loves and supports you unconditionally. It's a reminder that love can conquer all and that we should try our best to be there for others, the way our loved ones have been there for us.
