Zapp (aka Zapp & Roger, Zapp and Roger, Zapp Band, Human Body, Roger & The … Read Full Bio ↴Zapp (aka Zapp & Roger, Zapp and Roger, Zapp Band, Human Body, Roger & The Human Body & Zippy), was a soul & funk band, formed in 1978, by brothers: Roger Troutman, Larry Troutman, Lester Troutman & Terry Troutman. Other members included: Bobby Glover, Eddie Barber, Jannetta Boyce, Jerome Derrickson, Sherman Fleetwood, Gregory Jackson & Michael Warren. This band launched the career of Shirley Murdock and, in later years, employed keyboard stylings of Ohio Players' Billy Beck. Most recognizable influence on their sound came from, original Parliament / Funkadelic vocalist, Raymon Davis.

Zapp is best known for its 1980 funk hit More Bounce to the Ounce (produced by Bootsy Collins). The group recorded five albums as 'Zapp' & Roger recorded five others under his own name.

Roger & Zapp are known for the distinctive synthesized sound produced by recording vocals through a Talk box fed by an electonic synthesizer. Roger's voice can be heard on the Dr. Dre-produced 1996 Tupac Shakur hit "California Love". Roger also appeared on songs by Johnny Gill, Keith Sweat, Eric Benet and H-Town amongst others.

On Sunday, April 25, 1999, Roger Troutman was found shot and critically wounded outside a recording studio in Dayton, Ohio; he died during surgery at a local hospital. Roger's brother Larry was found dead in a car a few blocks away with a single gunshot wound to the head. It is likely that a personal dispute had developed between the two brothers; as far as can be determined, Larry shot Roger, then shot himself.

older brother, Larry. Roger was shot several times in the torso by Larry

I was 19 years old and the only white guy working at the car wash when this song came out. I heard it all day, every day, for months. It's still my go to song almost 40 years later. Those guys took in a little country boy and made him a friend and instilled a love of funk, jazz and blues that follows me to this day. Thanks, Zapp (and Roger) and to Pop, Youngblood, Kenny and Brother.

I remember when one of only two black music AM radio stations in L.A. first played this song in early June of '82. Funk was underground and you could only listen to it on the few black radio stations (and one non-black FM dance station) that existed in L.A. I was still listening and enjoying the '81 album by Roger. This song seemed to be the next level up in this kind of genre at that time after Roger's '81 album. Then when I first heard Doo Wa Ditty at KGFJ's skate party in Rowland Hts. in mid summer of '82, I was stunned. Never heard anything like it at that time. The kind of singing sounded weird but the synthesizer was very catchy. There were other funk songs during that summer like Girls by General Caine and the very popular Cutie Pie by One Way that further solidified hard-core funk as a unique genre and completely different from disco. 80s funk lasted only a few years. It degenerated into mundane, crappy electronic, repetitious music after 1983. I think it was like Cool jazz and other great music that only lasted for a few years. There are moments when particular styles of music reach their peak and then they're gone forever. Most people classified early 80s funk as disco and couldn't appreciate its complexity. The polyrhythms and multi-layers of synthesizers were too complex for the masses. Interestingly, when electronic music became popular after mid 1983 and throughout the mid and late 80s, the masses liked it a lot. It was simplistic, boring and mundane. Soon non-black radio stations began playing that gawd-awful stuff, which degenerated into worse genres. I liked early 80s funk so much that I only bought and listened to early 80s records and tapes throughout the 80s and 90s. There were so many early 80s records to buy that it was like discovering new music at that time. Never a dull moment. Still when I listen to most any funk produced in the early 80s, it never fails to disappoint. That's what happens when music is produced underground. You don't produce for the masses as most of today's crap. You produce for the sake of creativity and love of music.
