@Luke Majewski honestly I’m lucky and only really have problems with the walking aspect. I just walk with a Bounce ig you could say, and the nerves in my legs tend to cause them to shake every once in a while but besides the walking.. it doesn’t affect me too terribly bad. Hby?

@Candice Wheaton I'm really lucky with my cp, I can't write for long periods of time and I find some sports really difficult but I'm fine with 99% of things in life tbh. I get a lot of muscle spasms but most of them are extremely minor and just cause my eyelids to twitch or my hands to shake a little bit

@Luke Majewski yeah it’s pretty much the same for me, I don’t have really issues with anything else besides my legs, but I definitely get plenty of muscle spasms and my legs shake A LOT. My hips and lower back give me the most issues but it’s pretty tolerable for the most part. Just dating and meeting new people is what makes it hard. I can’t meet people online because I hate having to tell people lol

Maysoon is an inspiring and courageous woman who could have had a completely different life had it not been for her willingness to live, her good humor and her resilience. Is there a reason why she cannot find love, thus a relationship? Or does CP prevent that? She would make someone so HAPPY! Can she have children? Not trying to pry.
As someone else said, this is the first TED talk in ages that really made me inspired!

I just loved this presentation, it was amazing and inspiring. I had a lot of fun in the beginning, the energy is fantastic. It was glorious how it brought up such relevant issues as the social context of minorities to which it is humorously but firmly inserted, a good opportunity to internalize these things and to look at the world more critically and empathetically with the problem of others. by the existence of the problem, but by the challenges that impose it. During the speech I remembered some TV series, such as master of none that brings the subject of minorities more directly and also with humor. The only flaw of this presentation is that it ends, but a moving ending, I cried, tears of inspiration and impogal to do much. thanks

I'm a Physical Therapist AND a Palestinian and this put the biggest smile on my face. I am currently working with CP kids mostly and it's so challenging to say the least but every time we notice an improvement it's honestly the best feeling ever, I can't put it into words. To all those with CP, or any form of "disability", don't let society define your abilities... disability is a state of mind you CAN overcome it when you start to believe you can. Also, I've seen so many cases (especially in pediatrics) when the doctors said patient can't walk ever again, and with the grace of God and INTENSIVE Physio they were able to take their first steps. So hang in there, and don't ever lose hope. So proud of her and so proud to be a Physical Therapist. This is why I wanted to become one.

+BIKASH SAHOO no it's not the same... the progression of both diseases are not the same... the way you can be affected are different. CP can happen at different stages pregnany (before in the uterus, during labor, and after) and it happens when theres an injury in the brain (lesion) preventing oxygen from nurishing that lesion... leads to CP. For MD it's genetic... it shows up later in the kids stage (after a child walks even they start regressing and showing MD symptoms)... for CP it happens before 3 years old... after 3 years it's not considered CP! CP can be either hypotonia hyporeflexia and muscle weakness... or hypertonia hyperreflexia...it depends on if its UML/LML ... for MD it's always hypotonia muscle weakness!!

maysoonah You are officially now my new favorite female comedian, I never expected to laugh so hard and be so inspired all inside of one TED Talk. I really admire your confidence and self-deprecating humor, it presents disabled people as normal people and not social exiles to be mocked or pitied.

Thank you for giving this talk, seeing your ability to overcome so many obstacles and be successful gives me hope for my own future, that my life doesn't have to be defined by my limits. I have fibromyalgia, it's not comparable to CP but most disabilities aren't, which is one reason it's hard for us to unite as a group.

Have you seen the television show Broad City on Comedy Central? Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer are my (now 2nd) favorite female comedians right now and I feel like you would be perfect doing a guest role on that show. It's in New York and you're in New Jersey, and ironically though they're both Jewish you could probably pass off as the sister to either one of them.

This talk taught me two main things. First, there is much work to do yet regarding acceptance, respect, and tolerance in our society. This woman is doing her part to minimize the prejudice against disabled people and foreigners. As a mother to a daughter with CP this girl is amazing I love it! She makes humor about CP and shows everyone that being disabled is not a set back its just something she deals with and move forward. Right attitude, a supportive family and almost no thanks to the state or the healthcare system. Imagine if her family had been worse off, they wouldn't have sent her to dancing lessons, college and so on. I don't think she'd be able to achieve what she has. As positive her story is and as much of a downer I am, the lesson here isn't only to stay positive, unfortunately.

I kinda think that it would be nice if you wouldn't need the "right attitude" to get where you want. The main question is, would it be possible to disregard the disability and just judge people by their abilities. This is natural to almost all of us. I'm a darn good musician, but i really suck a maths. So it would be kinda odd if someone would feel uncomfortable giving me a Gig because i don't know what the f-ing pythagorean theorem is for.

I agree completely that this should be the case; however, the primary distinction between your example of music and maths vs disability is that people see disability before anything else. It is visible in ways that musical talent and mathematical skill are not. This visibility causes people to make quick judgments (our brains love to do this all the time). Here is to hoping that we will one day live in a world where people are judged on things that matter.

maggit I have never received aid from the government and as I said in my talk I won a scholarship to Arizona State University. When I was born, my family were new immigrants and far from well off which is why I went to tiny local dancing school that charged $33/month instead of physical therapy. As far as the state my parents had to sue them (Probono lawyer b4 you get the wrong idea) in order to mainstream me in the public school system. Also a lot of my healing happened in the 3rd world not stateside. I give credit where it is due. My parents went on to be financially successful but $ had little to do with who I became.

That doesn't disprove my point. And it was not my intention to accuse your family of anything. I was merely pointing out that believing in oneself is not the only thing that influences success and self-realisation. Despite having said you had help and support from your family (who had to fight the government to help you) the message that most people got from it was:' hey, be positive, everything will be OK and you can achieve anything if you want it' - the typical American Dream bs. I think that your family's struggles actually show something much different and viewing your story as such is oversimplifying things and covering real problems such as healthcare, exclusion, sexism, etc. All of the things you actually touched upon.

I tried so hard not to cry but that didn't last very long. I cried not because of her disability but because she touched my heart. I look around every day and watch people make excuses for everything (including myself at times) and blame people for everything they do not have. However, Maysoon Zayid took what others would have used as an excuse and she took her disability and turned it into her ability to soar.

I’m an Israeli who honestly doesn’t like to mix political views with my own personal life circumstances. I so loved your talk !!! I loved it because neither of us chose to which nationality to be born in just as much as a person (no matter what nationality or race) can not choose what life circumstances would they be dealt with !!! just like people force their views & interpretation in the political views that result in wars, portray a distorted view of a Loving God - in the same manner of handing us down these false interpretations that gradually become our own, same way we end up loosing our childlike perceptions pure interpretation of a friend no matter their disabilities, exactly we end up playing down people with disability as if they are emotionless as if they are lesser of a person as if they are no longer made in God’s own image and no longer therefore should be considered as normal one part of society just like any other person!!! - so well done for exposing these false fake perceptions that people have accepted !!! I loved every word that you shared out of the deepest cries of your heart in such a creative “salted” manner - all attributed to your long life experience in society to help out tearing down another aspect of life divisions of views toward making us more human again !!! Love from another person another human who hates the borders which only Love can pull down!

She is such an inspiring woman!!! Wow! This morning I heard of her in my favourite radio station (FM4) and had to watch the TED video - and it is wonderful! She made my day! She is so unconditionally optimistic and brave! I hope that she will always be confident with what she is doing and becoming more and more successful and famous! May all her wishes come true! She is an angel! <3

It's 2.30 in the morning, I couldn't sleep so grabbed my IPad and just clicked randomly. Normally I don't like stand up comedy but was too lazy to click onto something else.
Lucky me! This lady is a gem. So authentic and so funny with that genre of humor which has roots in real pain. Brilliant and touching at the same time. Are my tears ones of laughter or are they of deep empathy? It doesn't matter. I love this beautiful lady!
