They formed the Melody Makers when they were teenagers in 1979, and recorded "Children Playing in the Streets" with their father. They went on to perform at their father's funeral in 1981.
The band's popularity was at its highest during 1988, prompting a major record deal with Virgin Records. Shortly thereafter, the group released "Conscious Party," their third album. On the album was the hit single "Tomorrow People," and the album went on to earn a well-deserved Grammy.

The lyrics of Ziggy Marley And the Melody Makers' song "Herbs An' Spices" speak of revolution and change. The song mentions that wherever we go, there will be a change. This change is the result of the spices and herbs, which are symbolic of the power of nature and a metaphor for the strength of the people. The song speaks about standing up against oppression and breaking down rules that inhibit growth and progress. The message is that change is inevitable, and it will come through revolution and the power of the people.
The song encourages people to stand their ground and resist the obstacles that try to hold them back. It speaks to the need for the empowerment of the marginalized and the oppressed as a means of creating a better world. The lyrics encourage people to embrace their inner strength and power, to believe in themselves, and to stand up for what they believe in, even when it's unpopular.
