Summertime
Janis Joplin Lyrics

Summertime, time, time,
Child, the living's easy
Fish are jumping out
And the cotton, Lord,
Cotton's high, Lord so high

Your daddy's rich
And your ma is so good looking, baby
She's looking good now,
Hush, baby, baby, baby, baby now,
No, no, no, no, no, no, no,
Don't you cry, don't you cry

One of these mornings
You're gonna rise, rise up singing,
You're gonna spread your wings, child,
And take, take to the sky,
Lord, the sky

But until that morning,
Honey, n-n-nothing's going to harm ya,
No, no, no no, no no, no,
No, no, no no, no no, no,
No, no, no no, no no, no,
Don't you cry, don't you cry

@Trevor Morris
When I was a child I did not like her music either
And when ppl asked me if my mum was a fan of Janis I always hade to say yes
This year I started to listen peace of my heart for the first time
And one thing I can say I understand my mum very much so now
Janis is really unique
Maybe her voice is not perfect but does she have some soul in her voice like 😍
She is so raw it hits every thing in my being
Music like this they don't make anymore

This is impossible enchantment ...

I was a simple kid - only 15 years old and lived in Tiburon California at the time (I have lived in Geneva Switzerland since then) - our music Teacher at Tiburon High School, Lee Lincoln told us that the best of class were chosen and would be going on a school trip to meet Janis Joplin at her home in Larkspur. I was a beginning (classical) cellist and thought ... well ... just WHO could this singer be?? I thought this could be of no possible interest whatsoever.

My world was about to be dramatically changed forever...

When our class of chosen music students arrived at her house in Larkspur I remember seeing a car, a Porche, in every method and tone of psychedelic couleurs and upon knocking on the door a member of her band (I now know) opened to us and asked who we were. There was a odeur of incense and more (?) I suddenly realised that like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, that 'home' was very far away indeed and that I may never want to return!

Janis appeared from the first floor staircase in a morning robe and told us that she was sorry that she forgot that we were expected, could we just wander about the house while she put some clothes on - we did and so did she.

I remember her great GREAT simplicity - she asked us (some 9 music students) to sit in a semi-circle around her and then she just looked and LOOKED at us. Then she looked at me and said 'it is so nice that you have come to see me - thank you'. Then she turned to me she said 'I sing - what do you want to know?' I realised at that instant that I was in the presence of Genius and her simple ask, and her attention made my blood freeze. I asked why did she sing with such a special voice (don't forget I was 14 years old!) and after a moment of ponder she said 'real music is always more than just the notes I sing and lives there, I think, between the notes - not the notes themselves and this counts...this counts so so much...

Six months later she too, passed to the other side of the magical looking glass of eternity...

Now, living in Switzerland, and 65 years old and after having given my life to classical music (cello) with Masters Pierre Fournier and Jacqueline du Pré I still try to see to the stars that were her life and her Genius. Janis is as heartbreakingly essential and true as she was when she was with us on that day.

I wonder where and how she was able to reach such sacred stars....thank you Janis for this glimpse of timelessness

Nobody can compare. Her voice still gives me chills. Blues/rock goddess.

Secret Identity Network

She is in the same league as Etta James, Patsy Cline, Alison Krauss, etc.
