imagine graduated from university, working for same company for 30 years for 14-16 hours a day, being the only child, your parents died whey you're barely turns 30, spend the entire day go to work at 5 am, working on the same thing then go home at 3 am the following day, sleep on the street mid way, not even a day off work in a month, no vacation, spend your entire income paying off rent and basic needs, feel depressed then killed yourself at the age of 50 with no friends, no b/gf, no family, everybody doesn't care who you are, being erased from society....

Interesting. This brings to mind something I recently learned, is that bees become exhausted from overwork as well, and that is why it isn't uncommon to find them weak on the ground. I always thought they were dying of age, but instead they were tired and thirsty. If you give a tired bee sugar-water it may regain vigor.

Sentient being Wrong. The majority of white collar workers in Japan are single, and don't want relationships because it interferes with their careers. There's even a term for the men who live like this, they're called "sōshoku danshi", or "herbivore men". They completely abstain from women because it gets in the way of their careers. This is the prime reason birth rates have gone down in Japan. The issue isn't women, the issue is Japanese work culture.

I worked in factories in America for over 30 years, average work week was 50 hours and you could volunteer to work 8 on Saturday. Later I became a transit bus driver and bids on routes came up every three months that averaged 40 -45 hours a week with unlimited overtime if you wanted it. Some drivers worked 12 or more hours a day seven days a week making well over 120k a year. What I noticed was drivers who worked excessive hours shuffled in and out like zombies It wasn't until a driver nearly drove his bus off a divided highway that they made it mandatory to take 8 hours off between shifts. Before that some would finish at one in the morning and be back to work at 4:30.

I know how it feels. I used to work at the Japanese company twice and decided to quit because I couldn't take it anymore, they give me too much work and when I make simple mistakes (rarely), the manager will get angry at me as if it was a big deal even though I work so hard at the company and giving my all. I understand how perfectionist they are but still giving too much pressure to a good employee is so stressful and bad for my health. I still love Japan but I don't want to work at their company anymore but I'm sure not all Japanese are bad, you will be lucky if you find a good one.

My co worker that is Japanese and used to work in Japan, she said she worked like more than 14 hours pre day. I was really shocked! Didn’t even had 5 hours of sleep. She literally worked from 7am till 9pm. Now she works from 7pm till 4pm 9 hours pre day. The difference is insane. She said, she was so overworked & had many symptoms when she was working in Japan.

My solution is to help encourage companies to switch people out after a certain number of hours of work, so the company will still be operating and adding in fresh workers while also preventing overworking and encouraging a work-life balance :)

I had a job at a company, it was owned by I think an older Dutch man, and I remember my bus was either at 5:05 or 5:35, and I missed the one at 5:05 (most of the time) so I decided to wait in the office for a few minutes and tidy up my work area. He walked in at 5:10 and demanded to know why I was still there and that it should be lights off and locked up at 5pm. He stood there and waited until I grabbed my things and left, it was intense.

@albert einstien Yes but what will happen is the same things that happened to western housewives in the 50s and 60s, technology will be developed making jobs "easier" but in reality they will still have just as much work to do since they have that time (mainly busywork). E.g, wives are sort of expected to bake and make cakes which require hand beating eggs, which is labour-intensive, so the egg beater was made to fix that. but coincidentally it just so happened that angel cakes became popular, which required beating double the amount of eggs, making the workload practically the same. I dont think technology will change the root issue. It seems like people on the top will develop fake cures to overworking, only to raise the expectations and continue to overwork employees just as much.

The culture and attitude need to change. I personally think copying the techniques of countries that consistently rank the best at this type of thing (i guess you could call it work efficiency and mental health in the workplace) and go from there. I don't know why every country doesn't just do this instead of trying to reinvent the wheel out of pride and gambling on people's lives.

@mimries it's far more complicated then copy and paste what is working from other countries. So many factors. population density, culture, history, civil liberties ect. it's the arrogance of thinking there is a "best" way to do anything. Everything has pro's and con's. not every solution will work in every area.

this is why the larger the country the more powerful the local governments are. they need to be able to apply laws that work for the area.

as a simple example of what I mean. think about snow chains. if the law said you were required to carry snow chains in your car at all times would that be fair to people who live in california?

Sure not every solution works in every area, but has anyone ever tried the strategy? If it doesn't work, adjust so it does work. Or slowly introduce a culture that makes room for the change that it desperately needs.

And by the way, according to you, since there is "arrogance" in thinking there is a best way to do things, why does Finland consistently rank one of the highest in education, while, let's just say ummm... America, doesn't?

Yes, the phenomena of the herbivore men and the hikikomori are directly related to how modern Japanese young men view the modern work culture of their country. Most Japanese young men don't want to date, marry (since in the still very traditional Japanese culture marrying is still seeing as the obligatory expected end of dating) and finish high school and college because they know the moment they settle down with a college diploma, a wife and a job they will be expected by society and family to overwork to death in an opressive office room. It's like they are unconsciously avoiding being a victim of karoshi by being a herbivore man or a hikikomori.

That is something that has been discussed many time and thou the work for some is indeed extreme it is not a REAL situation, people are not overworking but overstressing, it is a common practice to not want to leave the workplace first cause you'll be seen as "less supportive" or "not industrious" so they stay late acting like working but not really. Is the environment of having to LOOK overworked and busy that stresses the body and gives false ideas to co-workers, superiors and public in general. They have to limit the overwork time but most of all destroy the tradition of needing to look overworked and busy cause this starts from school were children don't play but keep on acting like been busy studying, practicing, preparing.

To my perspective, seeing people sleeping on the street or anywhere in Japan n Korea is very normal because we know we're not the only one who's overworking but then again it's very very bad. You can say that some are too busy working instead of living life😔that's why some goes to bar to drink their stress away then start that life all over again, again, again (sigh) to where they're gonna think about suicide is the best choice for them😵 I live in Japan and Korea as a child, teen, youth adult now (sigh) And working here is VERY STRESSFUL. Like you study hard to get into high school then you gotta study hard to get into college. Afterwards you work hard to get an interview and when you do get the job ha you gotta work hard just to impress your boss. You work to live, not live to work. It's a sad life💔 the system NEEDS TO CHANGE.

This much overtime is pretty much normal in Northeast Asia, a problem that is hard to be addressed. With people working at home now due to Coronavirus, overtime is going to skyrocket worldwide, but pay for overtime is not going to change, or even get paid for those in Japan, most likely.

These people are passed out drunk, not passed out from exhaustion. There are sake vending machines in train stations so businessmen can have a drink when waiting. They do work long hours and so drinking in public is acceptable because its the only time they may have to drink. Its also "acceptable" for business people that get too wasted after work and miss the train to pass out/sleep anywhere.

I never work in the office, never do paperwork, never wear office suit, never follow those stupid law and never work more than 8 hours daily. My job is in my own responsibility, I must finish what I start. Must accept in losing profit if procedure not according to plan. But I love my job coz it give me fitness and flexible cash, sometimes going 40k per month, sometimes 3k per month. As long as my life doesn't goes like them it's okay

I went part time after my youngest child finished daycare. That was 9 years ago. I’m never going back full time. I was also burned out. I’m a healthcare worker and I make enough to survive part time or per diem. I need to live for my family and because it’s my life, and I’m not trading it for some organization and its profits.🌿

My philosophy is, if you can’t do it by 5 pm then the job can’t be done! You don’t get any thanks for working overtime people just use and abuse you, then expect you to work at the same pace during your normal working hours so I don’t do it. I manage peoples expectations of me.

That’s freaking crazy. Working to death is unheard of to me. Working OT is ok on a need to basis’ but i ain’t gonna make a life out of it. If I have to work for a company that make me sleep in the street of exhaustion, is time to get the F out and look for something else

In Japan, even if we go to a good school and get a diplome, end up being a slave.
Because there is still strict seniority. An avarage "salaryman" gets human rights after his 65 years old...
(That means Japan has great pansion systems for elder people)

80 hours OT is working 17 hours a day everyday...No way I could do that the most I've done is 12 hours 7 days a week (which is only 44 hours OT) for 3 months I took 5 months off afterwards xD

Japans full time weekly hours is 40, then + 20. Thats means japan works on average 60+ hours a week.
This is not uncommon in America. I live in Ohio there are not many people close to me that I know, that work under 60 hours a week or work only 1 job.
Become a steel/iron worker, you'll easily be pushing 90+ hours a week.
The most I have worked was 3 weeks of 16+ hours shifts with no days off.
That is pushing it, 60 hours is work but at least you are making money. At least we have laws preventing work over 16 hours tho. Japan doesn't, some workers have claimed to work 19+ hours a day.

One may think that Japan is the country that work the most, but it is actually far from it, I was actually baffled when I found out Mexico was the country that worked the most and doesn’t have these kind of issues. Weird

The first year postgraduate residents of medicine, orthopaedic, pediatrics, surgery and O&G in India clog around 120+ hours a week on an average.. Ironically this is considered normal in india and no steps have been taken in thus direction.

If you change overtime laws you must change the minimum wage simultaneously! Living wage is the working pay standard that addresses the issues of both financial and employee health.
Here in the U.S., you can be told that you won’t be paid for overtime since it may be “against the law” in certain career fields. So people who don’t get paid living wage get frustrated because they must work more to make a living! So then what do they do? Get a second job. Then we are right back to the problem we started with.

They have needed this exposure for many yrs. Is that why there are so many vending machines in Japan? Because they are always on the go? South Korea also drinks alot but for business. It doesn't make it any better because they are also dangerously inebriated. They are all under so much stress. My heart goes out.

At least you can slept outside safely. I spent about 20 years in Japan and you end up working ridiculous hours. Some big companies pretend they are taking action against it but in reality they don’t. On my last project Toyota was the client and they make vendors work like dogs. I left Japan and moved to the Philippines, of course i miss much about Japan but I am glad to have healthier work life balance.

I think the reason why there are so many overworked worker is because japan decreasing population, In my country, Indonesia the people here are chilling, they work freely, enjoying life, they don't need to overworked because if they are tired they could call someone to help their work.

While in Japan, the population keep decreasing, that mean the work for 2-3 persons is now for 1 person.

Imagine having to do 2-3 people work by yourself.

It's like doing a school group project by yourself.

The funny part being Japanese regulations limit work weeks to 44 hours a week, 8 hours a day. So, in reality, U.S. salaried workers are actually more overworked and underpaid than the Japanese.

Edit: Of course, some corporations illegally make their workers go over that limit, but legally they only have to work a max of 44 hours a week.

You can see men like that in some streets of Korea but is because they drank a lot the precious night and passed out in the street. (Drinking with coworkers is very common) Could this be the same reason why some of these men are in the streets? . Not denying that many due pass out due to overwork.

Personally I think it's because the Japanese are too weak to say no to their boss thinking that it's a negative thing or something. They care way too much about what others think off them to the point that they will do something that is absolutely out of their comfort zone just to please others. Like the kids at school who nominate another to be class president but a lot of times that person does not want to do it but feels pressured into doing it or are just to afraid to say no.

Most of them do only work your normal hours. Its just the afterhours eating and drinking to entertain clients and bosses that is taking the toll. Saw it all the time in Japan.

I live in mexico. Tijuana to be exact. I am from a southern part of Mexico where jobs are scarce and pay is very low compared to where I live now. But I too worked 80 hours of overtime a month. I’m one week, I would get paid what people in the U.S get paid in just two days.

This is happening everywhere. And the problem is us, the people, since we allow companies to treat us like that. I quit that job after a year, since I too was very depressed and had bad thoughts. But every job in Mexico makes you work 10 hours a day for 5 days a week. Some even 12 hours 6 days a week. It’s normal. Not like the U.S where it’s only 8 hours a day
So imagine me, a normal day is 10 hours, and I would still stay over time. You could say I worked 90 hours of overtime a week for almost an entire year

I'd rather scavenge and spend my day, I don't know, doing menial jobs to help people out and live a way-beneath-minimum-wage life than this tbh. I'd rather not do both, but this is too extreme for me.
