Lyrically, clipping.’s music attempts to reshuffle and repeat accepted rap scenarios, while eliminating a traditional single-point perspective. Diggs’s writing is heavily citational, like a rough-edged collage, gluing together half-glimpsed images and misremembered references, many of which might feel familiar, and some of which assuredly do not. But even while he consumes and regurgitates established styles, his self-erasure is incomplete; Diggs’s dense, often motormouthed flow remains wholly his own.
Individually, the members are known outside of the group for their extra-curricular artistic projects. Diggs is a stage actor, while Snipes composes music for film, and Hutson is an established noise music artist. Snipes and Hutson have collaborated on many projects, including the score to the documentary Room 237, which was released by IFC in 2013.
In February 2013, clipping. released their debut album, Midcity, on their website. The project was created entirely in-house, with the trio writing, producing, engineering, mixing and mastering all of the material themselves. There was no budget, no outside promotion, no hype-machine, no blog or label interest. In fact, clipping. had no expectation that anyone would bother listening to the album, let alone enjoy it. Nevertheless, reactions were largely positive— despite the uncompromising nature of the production, and its obfuscatory lyrical content— and within five month’s of Midcity’s release, clipping. signed a deal with Sub Pop Records.
CLPPNG, the band’s label debut, was written and recorded between February and October of 2013. Highly well-received, CLPPNG is an album that demonstrates the variety of sounds available when the ‘rules’ of a genre are willfully questioned.

Drownt
clipping. Lyrics
What's wrong with y'all, better chew the leaf
What's wrong with y'all, come touch the scale though
What's wrong with y'all, y'all can't believe it
What's wrong with y'all ain't trying to cut? Hell no
Float on, float on
Float on, float on
Watch y'all do your dance on top of the water
Watch y'all do your dance on top of the water
Watch y'all do your dance on top of the water
Watch y'all do your dance on top of the water
Watch, slide, wave
Pop, bubble, drop down, now float on
Pop, bubble, drop down, now float on
Pop, bubble, drop down, now float
What's wrong with y'all, better chew the leaf
What's wrong with y'all, don't call the whale though
What's wrong with y'all, ain't this the deep shit?
What's wrong with y'all ain't trying to cut? Hell no
Get low, let your tail touch your elbow
Yell, no, bellow don't stand to shell toes
Fellow fatale femme fin don't fail
So y'all best get down to business
Watch y'all do your dance on top of the water
Watch y'all do your dance on top of the water
Watch y'all do your dance on top of the water
Watch y'all do your dance on top of the water
Watch, slide, wave
Pop, bubble, drop down, now float on
Pop, bubble, drop down, now float on
Pop, bubble, drop down, now float
What's wrong with y'all, better chew the leaf
What's wrong with y'all, ain't trying to sell though
What's wrong with y'all, stuck in y'all sleep
What's wrong with y'all ain't trying to cut? Hell no
Why y'all sweating?
Y'all wanna bet you'll get something wetter than the wet
Better believe, y'all need to set a few
When the best of Wajinru, swim up in the section, the complexion of the deadest blue
Let it move with the current
Always drifting something new
Slip a little something in, the the present ready to
Come on with the come on, come get it
Stop acting like y'all ain't ready
Swim up
Watch y'all do your dance on top of the water
Watch y'all do your dance on top of the water
Watch y'all do your dance on top of the water
Watch y'all do your dance on top of the water
Watch, slide, wave
Pop, bubble, drop down, now float on
Pop, bubble, drop down, now float on
Pop, bubble, drop down, now float
What's wrong with y'all, better chew the leaf
What's wrong with y'all, who got the pale glow
What's wrong with y'all, thoughts y'all can't keep
What's wrong y'all ain't trying to cut? Hell no
Nope, nope, no y'all didnt'
Whale bone tail tone through the surf ripping
Holler if you want to hear the colonator's
Finna hear the fin up in the dimmest of the sea
And y'all should see the way to school
Get drippy
Clown fish down with the drownt kids pretty
Spongy by the time it hit the bottom of the city
On the bottom if y'all get 'em, then y'all got 'em
And the sand up in the web gets gritty
Y'all know how it goes, shine by committee
Get a nice brine one time then split it
Back to the corner of the deep y'all reside
And the next time y'all scared, y'all better hide
Watch y'all do your dance on top of the water
Watch y'all do your dance on top of the water
Watch y'all do your dance on top of the water
Watch y'all do your dance on top of the water
Watch, slide, wave
Pop, bubble, drop down, now float on
Pop, bubble, drop down, now float on
Pop, bubble, drop down, get drownt
