The Band, whose songs are primarily sung in English, performed their first concert on November 20th, 1989. The band displayed a bewildering array of influences, including Can, Captain Beefheart, Mingus-styled jazz, J.J. Cale, Leonard Cohen and Velvet Underground. Consequently, they incorporate a wide variety of styles into their work. dEUS have become one of the most successful (and influential) Belgian rock bands.
Many musicians became well-known after having been members of dEUS: Stef-Kamil Carlens (Moondog Jr., Zita Swoon), Rudy Trouvé (Kiss My Jazz), Danny Mommens (Vive La Fête), Craig Ward (The Love Substitutes), Jules de Borgher and Tim Vanhamel (Millionaire, solo). The current line-up (as from the album Pocket Revolution) includes Mauro Pawlowski (who became famous as solo artist and before with the band Evil Superstars) on guitars and vocals, Alan Gevaert on bass and Stephane Misseghers on drums.
Erik Drew Feldman and David Bottrill have acted as producers.
dEUS has made 8 studio albums up to now:
Worst Case Scenario (1994),
In A Bar, Under The Sea (1996),
The Ideal Crash (1999)
Pocket Revolution (2005)
Vantage Point (April 21st 2008)
Keep You Close (September 20st 2011)
Following Sea (June 1st 2012)
How To Replace It(February 17th 2023)
Other releases include:
My Sister = My Clock (1995) and
No More Loud Music - The Singles (2001), a best-of compilation.
Before Pocket Revolution (2005), dEUS took a "sabbatical" for over 6 years. In these years, Barman was busy with his second passion: film. He wrote and directed Anyway The Wind Blows, a movie received well by critics in Belgium. The key-song of the soundtrack for the film was Summer's Here by Magnus, a project by Tom Barman together with CJ Bolland.

Time sticks like a bottle of glue
Lots of trouble is travelling through
Will you come tonight
A new home, looks like a dream
Bite in you like a fresh tangerine
It's narcotic, a little bit mean
Suicide soul
Tip toe in the valley of doom
Inhale the rock'n'roll fumes
Like a bee without a zoom
Wandering through the mist
Heaven's there for all to see
Eternity for a minute or three
Oh, I just forgot what to be
So tell me what it is
Suicide soul
When she comes down the lights all fade
And so do we into a state ever after
It's time to revel and celebrate
What brings and keeps us here
Give it up for the wall and the nerve
Take it down for the cause they serve
Around the bush and around the curve
I'm crawling home to you
I can't stop 'cause it never began
My mind keeps on repeating this twang
Like a song that somebody sang
Now sing me something new
Suicide soul
When she comes down the lights all fade
And so do we in a state ever after
It's time to revel and celebrate
What brings and keeps us here
When she comes down we duplicate
Our mirrored gazes lazy from laughter
It's time to revel and celebrate
What brings and keeps us here
The song "When She Comes Down" by dEUS is a dream-like, surrealistic piece that speaks about the human experience of finding meaning and purpose in life. The opening lyrics describe a character who is bringing news, possibly about the state of the world, and sets the stage for the idea that there is a lot of "trouble" happening. The line "Time sticks like a bottle of glue" suggests that time is dragging on and things are at a bit of a standstill. The character invites someone else to come with them tonight, perhaps suggesting that they will find a way to break through the monotony and find some excitement.
The next verse speaks about a new home that looks like a dream and is described as "narcotic" and "a little bit mean". This could be interpreted as a metaphor for something desirable that also has a negative side to it. The line "Suicide soul" appears twice throughout the song, perhaps suggesting that the characters are struggling with inner demons or a sense of hopelessness. The next lines describe wandering through the mist and seeing heaven for just a moment before forgetting what it means. This could symbolize a fleeting moment of clarity or inspiration that is difficult to hold on to.
The chorus speaks of when "she" comes down, the lights fade, and everything enters a state of "ever after". This could suggest a time of reflection or introspection. The line "give it up for the wall and the nerve" could be interpreted as a call to break down barriers and take risks in order to find meaning. Overall, the lyrics are poetic and ambiguous, leaving room for interpretation and personal connection.

Lots of trouble is travelling through
There is a lot of chaos and problems happening
Will you come tonight
Are you going to join me in this experience?
A new home, looks like a dream
A fresh start that seems too good to be true
Bite in you like a fresh tangerine

Despite its flaws, it feels good and worthwhile

A troubled and dark mindset
Tip toe in the valley of doom
Tread carefully in a dangerous place
Inhale the rock'n'roll fumes

Lost and aimless in confusion
Heaven's there for all to see
There is beauty and divine serenity visible
Eternity for a minute or three
Time feels like it stands still in a moment of wonder
Oh, I just forgot what to be
Feeling lost and uncertain of one's identity
So tell me what it is
Seeking clarity and guidance from others
When she comes down the lights all fade
Everything seems to lose their luster when she's not present

We become aimlessly lost in a dreamlike state
It's time to revel and celebrate
It's a moment to embrace and enjoy
What brings and keeps us here
What we are experiencing and living for
Give it up for the wall and the nerve
Applause for the power and courage shown
Take it down for the cause they serve
Undo the harm that caused by those actions
Around the bush and around the curve
Tiptoeing around the truth or reality

Returning to a place of comfort and familiarity
I can't stop 'cause it never began
Feeling trapped and stuck in a situation
My mind keeps on repeating this twang
A persistent and repetitive thought or feeling
Like a song that somebody sang
Feels like a pattern or experience that someone else had

We mirror each other's movements and actions
Our mirrored gazes lazy from laughter
Our eyes connect in a tired, but joyful way
What brings and keeps us here
The experiences and relationships that give our lives meaning
