Clockwork
deadmau5 Lyrics

Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock
Tick tock, tick tock
I'm not disconnected, I'm not unaware
I'm in one place at one time
I'm neither here nor there
I'm hooked to the mainstream
Tuned into the world
Plugged into my surroundings
Not out on a limb
I'm thinking in a straight line
I'm thinking that these thoughts are mine
My heart is beating, oh so fast
I feel the hours crushing down
And my mind feels time like clockwork
And I think in sync like clockwork
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock
She's done away with emotion
She sees things clearly now
She says she sees it all from her room
And it looks so small from her room
It's alright, it's alright
I'm on your side for a while
She thinks the time is a concept
Which we measure our age
She wants to say it again
But she don't have time
Because her mind keeps time like clockwork
And she thinks in sync like clockwork
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock
Count the hours, count the months and minutes
You're born in the tears and you'll die in pain that's your limit
You're lookin' for some nasty reason
But there's no one there, why don't you admit?
We'll make the most of what we've got
That's the ticket, my, my, my
I stayed in that room a long, long time
And watched the seasons gliding by
And hey, what's the matter?
We've got time, lots of time
It's alright, it's alright
I'm on your side for a while
We'll wind up, we'll slow down
We'll speed up, we'll go down
And we'll maybe overwind
Because my mind feel time like clockwork
And I think in sync like clockwork, oh, oh, oh
When the minds feel time like clockwork
Oh, we'll think in sync like clockwork
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock

Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock
Tick tock, tick tock

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to deadmau5's song "Clockwork" explore the concept of time, and how it seemingly controls our lives. The ticking of the clock is used as a constant reminder of the passage of time, and how it affects our thoughts and emotions. The lyrics suggest that while we may feel connected to the world and our surroundings, we are also governed by time in a way that makes us feel like we are simply going through the motions.

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "my mind feels time like clockwork, and I think in sync like clockwork," which emphasizes the idea that time is always present in our minds and influences the way we think and behave. The second verse introduces a female character who sees the world differently than the singer, as she has done away with emotion and sees everything clearly from her room. She also views time as simply a concept used to measure age, suggesting that it may hold less importance to her than it does to the singer.

Overall, the lyrics of "Clockwork" convey a sense of resignation towards the power of time in our lives, while also acknowledging the possibility of finding meaning and making the most of the time we have.

The way this chord progression changes keys all the time is so magical.

The music was written by Henry Purcell in 1695 for the funeral of Queen Mary I of England. It was adapted by Walter Carlos for the opening theme to the film A Clockwork Orange (hence, "Clockwork" and "Orange Theme"), which was subsequently remixed by Cygnus X and here. Amazing that a 300+ year old tune has stood the test of time - and that what was supposed to be mournful is now ecstatic.

Poetic that the Beethoven of the modern world re-works a 300 year old classic. Proves that music and good taste will never die. Big respect Joel.
