Boer here from the (Orange) Free State! Great to hear something about my people on a popular podcast. I was startled by the assertion in the previous podcast that the Great Trek was started over the abolition of slavery. I'm reasonably sure that info is incorrect. Also, the concentration camps definitely was NOT for the "benefit" of the women and children. Great PR though. It's pretty common knowledge that it was a war tactic and also the reason you were probably not very welcome at grandma's home with your "soutie" (English) girlfriend. There is a hatred, especially amongst older folks, for the Brits that runs very deep over this issue. Anglo Boer war in a nutshell... Little Johnny in grade 2 has a sandwich but Brundo (grade 5) wants it and bullies Johnny for it. Johnny knows he cannot win in a normal fight, so he kicks Brundo in the nuts and runs. Brundo is embarrassed though plus he really wants that sandwich so he keeps going after Johnny, but Johnny is too quick for him and keeps getting away and embarrassing Brundo. Brundo then pulls out a knife and grabs Johnny's little sister... The boers never fought to win the war in the sense that they tried to eradicate the enemy. They just wanted to Brits to leave them alone. That's why they would constantly retreat when they had the upper hand, and release captured soldiers etc.

South African here now living in England and I second Ben's comments. Having visited the Imperial War Museum in London I was quite taken aback at how differently the boer war has been framed. 26,370 women and children died in those camps. As Churchill said "History is written by the victor".

Lekker Ben. Bly om te sien daar is ander Afrikaners wat die gevind het.

The heliographs are about a ten inch mirror mounted on a surveyor's tripod. It had a cover like the navy signal lamps with a handle so you could flash without moving the mirror once it was aimed.

Also, echocharles, you can see a three inch hand mirror flash 40 miles away just fine, you just have the same problem with aiming that you get with a handgun, which makes it much harder to work the morse code.

I can relate because I do jiu-jitsu. I love it when Jocko and Echo nerd-out on jiu-jitsu commentary and analogies (42:00) to everyday business and life.

Bruh, imma watch 'Coming to America' right after this podcast, lmao.

ECHO LOOKIN' JAAAAAAAAAAAACKED!

The heliograph was on a tripod, similar to the old cameras. The mirror was in a box with a lever to quickly open and close a window to signal in morse. Eendrag maak mag.

Here's a bolt of lightning for you, Jocko. Rename "The Thread" "Jocko Thread" or maybe "The Weave: Presented By Origin Maine."
