So tired of being weak
I have neither strength to stand nor discipline to sleep
I question my labor when I strain my back in vain
And I realize that the future and what I think just ain't the same
Ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah

Lord who would really blame me if I smoke my life away
I handle monotony by lengthening my days

A skeptic of intention
For who is there to trust
Even nature soon would carry all of us back to the dust
Sure I know my neighbor
Man at least I know his name
And with all these busy schedules being a friend just ain't the same
Ah ah ah

I handle monotony by lengthening my days

Well they tell me if work gets slow I'll be the first to go
Some days I get worried man
Some days I hope so

In "The Story Of My Life" by Friends, the singer expresses feelings of exhaustion, weakness, and skepticism about the future. They reflect on their own shortcomings, feeling that they lack the strength to stand or even the discipline to sleep. Despite their efforts to work hard and succeed, they feel that their labor is in vain and that the future they imagine is different from the reality they face. In light of this, the singer considers smoking their life away and extending their days as a way to handle the monotony.
The singer also reflects on the challenges of maintaining relationships amidst a busy schedule. While they know their neighbor's name, they recognize that being a friend just isn't the same in a world where everyone is always so busy. The singer is also skeptical of others' intentions and trusts no one, believing that even nature will eventually turn on them and bring them back to dust.
Overall, "The Story Of My Life" is a song that speaks to the struggle of daily life and the challenges of finding meaning in a world that often feels oppressive and hopeless.
