Far And Away
friends Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Walking by houses covered in lights
People passing by looking for something
Snow falling down melting on the ground
Kids running around chasing snowflakes

Sounds from far away someone's singing hallelujah
Sounds from far away someone's singing hallelujah
Bombs are falling killing loved ones
Heartache and pain you lost a friend
Gods gift for us a newborn king
Angels were singing grace came down

Sounds from far away someone's singing hallelujah
Sounds from far away someone's singing hallelujah

Everything will be ok put your trust in him
Everything will be ok put your trust in him

Someone's singing hallelujah

Someone's singing hallelujah
Someone's singing hallelujah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Far And Away" by Friends paint a vivid picture of contrasting scenes and emotions during the holiday season. The song begins with the peaceful imagery of walking past houses adorned with lights, as people go about their search for something meaningful. The falling snow becomes a symbol of innocence and joy, with children playfully chasing after snowflakes.

However, the tone shifts dramatically in the next verse, touching upon the harsh realities of life. The lyrics mention bombs falling and loved ones perishing, representing the pain and heartache that can exist alongside the holiday cheer. Despite the sorrow, the lyrics also mention the birth of a newborn king, alluding to the religious significance of Christmas. The angels' singing is a symbol of grace coming down to comfort those who are hurting.

Throughout the song, the repetition of the phrase "someone's singing hallelujah" suggests a message of hope and the power of music to heal and uplift. It encourages listeners to find solace and trust in a higher power even in the midst of dark times.

Overall, "Far And Away" by Friends portrays the contrasting aspects of the holiday season, acknowledging both the joys and sorrows that coexist during this time.

This takes me back to the heady days of the Dovecot Arts Centre throughout the 1980s and WIlliam Jones as the music officer. We saw some great indie bands - Age of Chance, Asphalt Ribbons, Band of Holy Joy, Bodines, Edwyn Collins, Felt, Housemartins, June Brides, Jamie Wednesday, Shamen, Triffids, Television Personalities, Voice of the Beehive, Weather Prophets, the Wedding Present & Yeah Yeah Noh. This was William's own band and the best track they ever did IMO. Cheers Mr Jones!

Wow, I dont know why I searched for this as I never expected it to be here. Back in the 80s I worked for Cleveland Archaeology and a guy called, Bruce who was in this band also worked with us. They did a gig at the Dovecot and a load of us from work went to watch them. Great memories

Damper Goldenrod

Cleveland band? They sound british or Australian

@Damper Goldenrod Cleveland is also the name given to an area in the north east of England. They were from Stockton-On-Tees.
