You wanted lights, go see a show
You ran away, that's touch and go
You're scared of love, well, aren't we all?
Well, aren't we all?
Yeah, well, aren't we all?
I know that you started to feel what I feel
But you couldn't dare to make it real
Oh, it's such a shame (you left it here)
And I wasn't asking for a lifetime
I was just asking you to take my hand
Just for a minute or a night
Was it too much to ask?
You're scared of heights, that's vertigo
You wanted lights, go see a show
You ran away, that's touch and go
You're scared of love, well, aren't we all?
You felt alive, that's chemical
You felt secure, that's called a home
Couldn't take the heat, that's Mexico
You're scared of love, well, aren't we all?
Well, aren't we all?
(Well, aren't we all?)
I thought that I could be the one to change you
I thought that I could be the one to prove
I'm used to fixing broken things before
I thought maybe I could fix you too
I wasn't asking for a lifetime
I was just asking you to take my hand
For just a minute or a night
Was it too much to ask?
You're scared of heights, that's vertigo
You wanted lights, go see a show
You ran away, that's touch and go
You're scared of love, well, aren't we all?
You felt alive, that's chemical
You felt secure, that's called a home
Couldn't take the heat, that's Mexico
You're scared of love, well, aren't we all?
Said, "Don't look down" and then you do
You put your past on me and you
Think you got problems, I have too
You ran from love, that's nothing new
You're scared of heights, that's vertigo
You wanted lights, go see a show
You ran away, that's touch and go
You're scared of love, well, aren't we all?
Well, aren't we all? Yeah
You're scared of heights, that's vertigo
You wanted lights, go see a show
You ran away, that's touch and go
You're scared of love, well, aren't we all?
Well, aren't we all?
In Griff's song "Vertigo," the lyrics explore the theme of fear and vulnerability in relationships. The song begins by acknowledging the fear of heights as a metaphorical representation of the fear of taking risks in love. The line "You're scared of love, well, aren't we all?" encapsulates the universal experience of being afraid of love and its potential to hurt us. It suggests that the fear of love is something that many people can relate to.
The lyrics continue to delve into a past relationship, where the singer describes how they could sense that the other person was starting to feel the same way. There is a longing for them to make their connection real, but the other person hesitates and leaves it unfulfilled. This disappointment is evident in the line "Oh, it's such a shame (you left it here)."
The chorus reinforces the theme of fear, exploring various aspects of fear and insecurity in the relationship. The references to feeling alive through chemicals and feeling secure in a home highlight the temporary nature of these sources of comfort. The line "Couldn't take the heat, that's Mexico" implies that the intensity of the relationship was too overwhelming or difficult to handle.
The bridge section reveals the singer's hope that they could be the one to change the other person and fix their brokenness. However, they come to the realization that this may have been an unrealistic expectation. The line "I thought maybe I could fix you too" reflects the desire to heal and make the relationship work.
Overall, "Vertigo" is a song that explores the complex emotions of fear, vulnerability, and disappointment in relationships. It highlights the common experience of being scared of love and the challenges that come with opening ourselves up to others.

Damn, I really love how Griff uses noise in her productions. It's got this relentless warmth to it and then the space gets filled with this little hits of coarse, detuned goodness. It's just such a great sound.

Agree! The production feels very full, it really feels like the song surrounds you.
