This list gave me a few more medieval shows to watch, thank you.
So far I have watched:
Norseman
Marco Polo
The King
Rise of an Empire: Ottoman
Outlaw King
And The Last Kingdom which I am currently watching again, it is that good.
I tried watching Cathedral at the Sea before but it started off so slow, I walked away. I’ll give it another chance.
All these shows are very good and most hold true to history, which I like. I’m always in need of a good medieval series so I keep checking your channel for recommendations.

the last kingdom is great man. loved the scenes between Uthred and King Alfred. David Dawnson did a fantastic performance for playing King Alfred.

@@HistorySpark they sure did but Uthred didn't age a bit and had grown kids that didn't look much younger them him. Still laughed, cried and got angry during the 5 seasons, especially season 5 the last episode!

The first season of the last kingdom was slower for the correct cinematic reason, to get the chance to introduce the characters, geography, the concept of animosity between the Normans and Saxons for unfamiliar viewers, the speed up the story. Great actors, nice ensembles

As was recommended by History Sparks, I watched My Country The New Age. Wow. It was soooo good. The acting, the costumes, the cinematography, locations, the musical scores were all top notch. I downloaded several of the songs. This show seems to stay with you for awhile. I won’t spoil it for you but I never cried so much in my life as I did at the end of this show. Very emotional. As HS said, at one point characters are stabbed, slashed and run through with swords and were up and in another battle the next day. But ignore it because the storyline is so good, with a few twists thrown in. I can’t say enough about this show, you won’t regret watching it.

Wow I am soo glad u watched my country based on my recommendation, its such a good show right? I get exactly what u mean by it stays with u after u watch it. I did soo much research into the Joseon dynasty after that and even into other South Korean cinema as well. Definitely the most impressed I've ever been by a show that isnt even remotely mainstream

@@HistorySpark That’s what I’m doing now, researching the Joseon Dynasty. I’ve also researched the amazing actors who brought these amazing characters to life. I had never watched a k-drama before. This was so intense and well done. I’ve never studied the history of South Korea so I blissfully and ignorantly watched My Country without any preconceived notions.Thank you so much for steering me in this direction. I love history.

My Top 3: 3) Outlaw King 2) Norsemen 1) The Last Kingdom.
Norsemen is criminally underrated. You can't go wrong with a story written by Bernard Cornwall. Having read all the books, the series stays remarkably close to them. Hopefully, we can also get the Warlord Chronicles.

Marco Polo is highly slept on.. i hear people talking about TLK, Vikings and GoT but Marco Polo is up there with some of the best.

I'm a Bernard Cornwell junkie and read the Saxon Chronicles from start to finish - they are the base for "The Last Kingdom." Maybe the show is ok for those unfamiliar with the originals, but it makes a mockery of the basic plots and basic characters in books. The actor who plays Uthred is fine, but this show could have been much better.
And the King has Falstaff leading Henry V's army at Agincourt. Falstaff is a character from Shakespeare and never lived. Insane.

Another older great show based on Bernard Cromwell’s books is Sharp staring Sean Bean.
It’s not on Netflix and it came out in the early 90’s but they had series on and off till 2008 or so.
It is about the Napoleonic wars.

Point taken. But you don't know how many plot angles were thrown in that simply cheapened the show. For instance, Father Beocca's wife Thyra (Ragnar the younger's sister, once mad) is murdered in the series to make some political point. In the books they fade out as they age. In the show they make Æthelwold - a historic figure - into a traitor and instigator of a Viking attack on Wessex. In the books - he appears in several - he's too ineffective for anything so dramatic. Everything Netflix does cheapens things. In their Queen's Gambit, the female chess wizard wins because she uses drugs. In the book, she wins when she gives them up. This has kept me from enjoying the show and I sure hope fans will give one of Cornwell's books a crack. They're very good.

The Sharpe movies are good indeed - they're a little long for a TV series - they run close to 90 minutes. Netflix may have DVDs still. The last in the series, "Sharpe's Waterloo" was made considerably later and I think is easier to find - it's also the best of the bunch.

Marco Polo sucks ..it's only 2 seasons and they barely show the actual strength of the great mongol empire .. 2 seasons while the mongol empire rulled over whole Asia and parts of Europe . That's just way to short

And rise off ottoman mwa mwa rather watch the tv series magnificent century about ottoman empire much more accurate and longer

netflix should make an Alexander series. The Alexander story is long based on Plutarch he had 100+battles , the 2004 movie was too short and inaccurate to depict what really happened

I don't know why, but I have yet to see any tv show or movie about ancient China that has even remotely interested me. There's some awesome documentaries about amazing true stories, but for some reason it seems they refuse to tell them. Like the story of the pirate queen, Ching Shih. Give me an epic mini series about her and I'll have the popcorn out, ready to binge in half a second. But for now the best we got is Puppet History I guess.

You'd think Hollywood would want to throw some money at come awesome Chinese based content considering how much money China brings in. I mean they are always modifying movies for the Chinese market to keep them happy, why not tell some amazing stories about their history..

I loved Dirilis: Ertugrul. I called it my lifetime commitment since it had 450 episodes on Netflix. However, as HS states, it’s not an Original Netflix series.

@@HistorySpark I too love “Ertugrul”, which was a Turkish TV series taken up by Netflix. I’m currently well into the final series. And yes, I am retired so can binge watch. A fantastic series and the best medieval show I’ve ever seen.
