Lullaby, and good night, with pink roses bedight,
With lilies o'er spread, is my baby's sweet head.
Lay thee down now, and rest, may thy slumber be blessed!
Lay thee down now, and rest, may thy slumber be blessed!
Lullaby, and good night, your mother's delight,
Shining angels beside my darling abide.

Soft and warm is your bed, close your eyes and rest your head.
Soft and warm is your bed, close your eyes and rest your head.
Sleepyhead, close your eyes. mother's right here beside you.

I'll protect you from harm, you will wake in my arms.

Guardian angels are near, so sleep on, with no fear.
Guardian angels are near, so sleep on, with no fear.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the song 'Brahms Lullaby' are touching and heartwarming, capturing the essence of a lullaby. The song starts with the words "Lullaby, and good night, with pink roses bedight, With lilies o'er-spread, is my baby's sweet head." In these lines, the singer is singing to a baby, wishing them a peaceful sleep, surrounded by lovely flowers. The word "bedight" means covered or adorned, adding a sense of beauty to the image.

Next, the song continues with "Lay thee down now, and rest, may thy slumber be blessed!" The repetition of this phrase emphasizes the soothing nature of the song. The singer is encouraging the baby to sleep and assuring them that their sleep will be blessed. The following lines, "Lullaby, and good night, your mother's delight, Shining angels beside my darling abide," reveal that the singer is the baby's mother, expressing her love and joy in having the baby in her life. She is also acknowledging the presence of the angels who are watching over the baby.

In the second verse, the singer creates a cozy and secure environment for the baby by saying, "Soft and warm is your bed, close your eyes and rest your head." Adding to the reassurance, the mother sings, "Sleepyhead, close your eyes. Mother's right here beside you. I'll protect you from harm, you will wake in my arms." The words "protect" and "right here beside you" create a sense of safety and comfort for the baby.

Finally, the mother invokes the image of guardian angels, assuring the baby that they are never alone, "Guardian angels are near, so sleep on, with no fear. Guardian angels are near, so sleep on, with no fear." The melody, simple and soothing, further reinforces the reassuring message of the lyrics.

Overall, Brahms' Lullaby is a timeless and beloved classic that evokes feelings of love, security, and peace.

We don't talk about it very often, but the camera work is one of the best I have ever seen! Whoever decided what frame to show really knows well the symphony and which player/section has the important line. Amazing!

@fonsecorona

Yes indeed...One of my major pet peeves on live performances not viewed in person (cause when I'm present, I don't have to go through that torture 🙂), of any kind, but particularly in classical music...to be forced to look at the face of the pianist through a solo passage played by the cellist, for example...Sometimes it gets that bad....But here, as you point it out, the camera approach is flawless...Very well done!

@devonchristopher5837

Yea. It's not like a single shot, but also not like an action movie

@TCFrankendaemy

Sarah, you are perfectly right! My late wife played 40 years in this wonderful orchestra.

@TCFrankendaemy

Correction: my wife played in the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (KCO) of Amsterdam.

@bizet54

@@TCFrankendaemy Wow, 40 years! The RCO is an incredible orchestra, one of my favorite! What instrument did your wife play?

I heard this the first time in 1960 as a six year old visiting my grandparents in Cleveland. They took me to hear this performed under conductor George Szell. I mistakenly clapped at the end of the 1st movement, but Mr Szell was very kind when he noted that I was just a child. (We had seats just below him in the Orchestra section).
I've never forgotten how moved I was by this symphony, or the conductor's indulgence to a new listener.

@adude394

One of the greatest symphonies of all, led by one of the greatest conductors of all. Maestro Haitink spent a lifetime on the podium, with the focus on serving the music first and foremost.

@harrymotus

Saddened after the news, RIP Bernard Haitink you will be missed, but remembered as one of a great conductors among the greatest.
