Do you mind if I ask how he was able to stop smoking? What helped him with the cravings and all? Proud of your dad! My mother has been a smoker since the age of 9, she’s tried quitting many times over the years, but every attempt failed unfortunately. He quitted smoking cold turkey easily when he was 60 yo (no withdrawal symptoms and cravings), and he never smoke cigarette since then until today (81 years old). A very small percentage of people have strong soul to stop addiction effortlessly. I think regular physical exercise will help, my dad started to become avid cyclers after quitting smoking, and he became addicted to cycling for about 10 years, which was good for him 👍

If you think this is bad, try coming to any U.S. ghetto - crack, dope, guns, fatherless and motherless children, crack babies, mothers having children for the sole reason of increasing their welfare check, its terrible. I drive Uber around a bunch of New Jersey ghettos and I've seen enough horrible human beings to last 15 lifetimes. Then again, I'm also driving there precisely because you make more money transporting a bunch of poor people without cars, paying 6-10x more for a ride than middle class people in middle class areas where most people have cars, so I guess I'm part of the system that keeps the poor disenfranchised and hopeless. The whole structure of poor society is intentionally designed to keep the poor in, and down. Why do twinkies cost less in the ghetto, but fresh produce, books, computers, and almost anything somewhat beneficial cost more?

Its crazy man, the cycle of poverty and lack of education. Anyone who makes it out of the ghetto has climbed a mountain taller than Everest.

When I was smoking in 2007 you could get a 20 deck of B&H Golds out of a pub vending machine for like £6.50. I don't smoke anymore anyway, but nowadays they're like £14.

Lesser quality brands were even cheaper still. One night in 2008 or thereabouts I was going to the shop and my flatmate asked me to grab him 10 L&B. It was a shade under £4.

As someone with sever ADHD that has led to sever alcohol/nicotine addiction as a self medicating coping mechanism, I can totally relate to the obsessive-compulsive need to chase that dopamine hit at all costs. My brain is a cacophony of noise, and the only time it feels remotely still is when I modulate my brain chemistry with dopaminergic chemicals.

But on the bright side, after 16 years of daily round the clock drinking, I'm finally getting help. Weekly psychotherapy and waiting on rehab. It's been a tough journey, and most people just don't understand the struggle, but I've learned to ignore the judgement and gaslighting and just focus on healing and improving myself.

This is tragic. The community is trying to support this family, but it’s clearly going to take patience and persistence to help them be free of their nicotine addiction. Unfortunately, though, no amount of support can work until each of them are actually motivated to quit. As for Joe, a minor, if it were up to me, I would:
establish clear parental boundaries and house rules with meaningful consequences for misbehavior, taper him from nicotine under medical supervision and with therapy, require that he attend the school that caters to his learning needs, and not give him a penny to spend on his own. I feel he would respond well to a consistent schedule, responsibilities, expectations, and discipline. I really hope his mother is able to establish an environment such as this and that they both are healthy and happy.

The kid doesn’t need a long list of what the community and health system should do with his kid. A typical father would’ve punished the kid for trying to smoke, disrespecting his mother, sneaking out of the house and doing poorly in school. Obviously he needs direct parenting to help him with education but building in self discipline is the only way to keep him on the right track through life. The mother is basically a bad babysitter who can’t handle any type of confrontation, which the kid knows very well and how to use that fear to get what he wants. If a parent allows their good kid to hang around/be friends with obvious losers, take a wild guess what’ll happen? It’s one thing for a teenager to dress or talk a certain way but when those friends all have poor grades in school and one by one drop out of school and start smoking then they try marijuana and then the next drug down the list. I’ve seen this happen twice in my family and it was because the new stepfather wasn’t allowed to discipline the kid as per the mother. And not to mention how critical genetics play a role in a child’s behavior and intellect.

It's a MAJOR problem she's is the one buying cigarettes for her child although at the Drs she claims stranger buy them get in several moments on camera she gives him cigs telling him to take 4 ! She's a fully grown woman and his mother yet when asked by the Dr she gives her CHILD the ultimatum "I'll quit if you do " ...pretty sums up every issue in his life! Parents need to take responsibility and actually participate in their kids life, that means to create stability, to know who your kid is hanging out with and where and communicate with their parents. To know where your kid is at and certain time frames for the kid to be at home! As a parent you should know what your kid is up to! It's obviously a symptom of the larger problem of near poverty. Poverty is often a vicious cycle and creates a lot of problems - crime, addiction, inability to be a proper parent, etc - because people will need stuff to cope with it, aren't or can't be busy with school or work, and it's multi - generational, so generations of kids aren't given the resources they need to break the cycle. Poverty is the real root cause that needs to be treated, the other problems will naturally significantly improve afterwards

@Abigail Marshall my husband and I both came from poverty and what used to be called dysfunctional families. We chose to change our circumstances and have. So it's difficult for me to divorce people from individual responsibilities. After all at Nanas home the child can and does modify his behavior. If folks are encouraged to embrace their "problem" vs looking for change things usually stay static. Not that I don't get where you're coming.

Try vaping if you cant stop smoking, it has helped many people so maybe it could save u too. Unlike smoking it doesnt have the 7000 chemicals, it also tastes better and doesnt give you a bad smell. Its also way more healthy than smoking. I hope u can stop ur addiction man

I smoked from aged 12 until I was 35 and I was a heavy smoker and smoked 50 to 60 cigarettes a day. I tried all the usual methods to stop and none worked what finally got me to stop was reading Allen Car’s book How to stop smoking. I couldn’t believe how easy it was compared to all the other times I tried to quit.

I smoked for the first time at 11. I became a more steady smoker at 12. At 18 I have been pretty much smoking a pack a day. I am 36 now. As much as I respect this as an idea even at 11 I knew the negative effects of smoking but I didn't care. I doubt this kid does either.

Yeah, everyone who is 4 and up knows its bad for you. Addiction doesn't really work like that. Once your brain chemistry is screwed up, virtually no amount of willpower alone can get you off these things. It is improbable to the point of almost being impossible without being forced upon you.

This is a wildly common thing to look back on if you are a millennial who grew up in South Korea. A lot of folks there, both boys and girls, started smoking cigs when they are 8 or younger. I don’t know what it’s like over there now but there used to be classes at some schools that would teach kids how to quit smoking.

I remember going into a laundry mat about 40 years ago, there was this woman who was probably in her mid 20s along with her son, who looked to be my age at the time, which was around 8 or 9 years old. Anyway, I sat there watching this kid smoke several cigarettes with his mother, every time he wanted another one he reached into his mothers purse and grabbed another. He did it without a care in the world, it was so natural to him. I just found it so odd. Smoking was more common many years ago in the sense that people used to smoke in stores, in restaurants, in hospitals and even in schools. Of course, smoking at a younger age was common too.

As a parent of a child with severe ADHD this makes me angry. There is no reason a 13 year old should be chain smoking. ADHD is a poor excuse for crappy parenting. The mom needs to take back control and stop letting a 13 year old child run her house. This is just lazy parenting she lets him smoke so she doesn't have to confront his behaviour instead of getting to the root of it and helping him develope healthy ways to deal with it.

I started smoking when I was 6 years old. In my day cigarettes were sold out of machines in all the stores and restaurants, you name it so we could buy them very easily. 50 cents a pack. I grew up in an era where smoking was part of the socially acceptable thing to do. If you didn't smoke you were considered weird. My doctor smoked. So it wasn't my parents fault I started so young. Now I quit smoking 8 years ago but it was too late. My world has been shrunk down to the size of my living room. I have COPD and now my heart is effected. I wish I would have known what I was getting into. There were no surgeon warnings, no nothing. Just smoke them and life is wonderful. Young ppl don't smoke! You will regret it

This was 2007 so the age to buy was 16 and age checks were not as strict. When i was 14-15 i'd just go and buy them, if one shop didn't serve me another did. And as someone says you could get older kids to buy (that's harder now with think 21).
I just wonder how he afforded it. I used to buy a pack for £2.80 in the 90's (they are are £12 now) but those would last the week. I'd get a few free cigs at school or you could buy one off this kid for 50p. There was always a playground entrepreneur.

I've been smoking on and off since I've been 10 years old. My breathing, absolutely wonderful. Been on the swim team too and a dancer and a gymnast. The problem is is that child isn't getting any exercise whatsoever. And, I've always been a tobacco snob. Which is one reason why I love cigars more than I do the terrible cigarettes that they make today.

Genetic says everything to do with the cancers that we get the type of cancers. Now with his nutritional intake and no exercise yes he is more apt to having bad issues from his smoking. But I have to argue against being a young smoker and being unhealthy or lungs being in a terrible condition. The matter of fact whenever I admit that I'm a smoker. I turn 44 this fall. My doctors are like are you serious you don't even smell like cigarettes. Of course not. I take care and pride. If I smoke in my home it's within my kitchen nook. Not all over my house not near clothing. In the warmer weather I love to smoke outside. And I also smoke other things as well such as green things Mary jane. I have since I've been 13.

I have what is called ehlers-danlos syndrome. Vascular and hypermobile. It's a connective tissue disorder. At 11 I got gastroparesis. All the way up until I was about 12 years old. The weight started falling off my body. It is the most uncomfortable thing in the whole world. It's where you eat, and unfortunately your body digestion completely has shut down and your body forces your food and drink contents out of your body immediately. It's so embarrassing. If you've ever seen The exorcist it's like that. So embarrassing.

They wanted to do surgery and put a feeding tube straight into my stomach in the upper bowel region. My mother said once you start cutting you never stop. She said what about smoking Mary Jane. The doctor was like well that's illegal but that can help. My mom smiled that day, and said well we have our answer. I was actually 13 then that next day was my birthday. She taught me how to roll taught me how to smoke. I ate a large cheese pizza and half of my birthday cake. I cried because I actually held the meal down. Without pills without surgery. Just from me smoking a little something.

It isn't a competition, you don't know the depths of these people's lives and to one's with young kids, what say do you have? How do you know your kid won't end up being a smoker as an adult? I grew up in an environment where some people smoked but most didn't and read up on smoking in the school library at lunchtime, I've been against smoking since I learned about it.
I was admitted to a psych ward when I was 22. For the first time in my life most people around me smoked and the number of non-smokers was tiny. I met someone there who started on the ward and said it was the best bad decision she'd ever made.
I came out on smoke breaks sometimes for the social aspect, but I was never tempted to start smoking.
When I moved to the supported living, it was the same situation. I actually dislike smoking more than I did in the past.
I'm hanging out with people while they're smoking, It's nice to be with people, but the smell isn't nice and it's probably not the best for my physical health as I'm breathing in the unfiltered smoke.

I had my first cigarette around 8 or 9 years old then when I was around 13 i smoked daily then I quit for a year when I was 16 or 17 i actually quit for one year exactly because a friend bet i couldn't then I just kept smoking afterwards. Edit: honestly after watching this i think i wouldve just smoked more if i had people constantly bothering me and making smoking such a big deal every damn day when i was a child. I didn't have a great childhood and all that but i wasnt anywhere near so focused on smoking as that kid he was given way too much attention for it. I was too focused on my hobbys and stuff when i was young.

My best friend in middle school and early high school started smoking when he was 12 or 13, his mom was buying him cartons by freshman year, it made me so sad.

there’s a massive motivation block in estates like that. it feels like why should i do whats “right” when there’s no point, i’m always gonna be poor anyway. i’ve felt like that a lot.
