As an African my mom grew up around the coastal area of East Africa where she loved braiding European and other foreign peoples hair and adding sea shells as decoration! It’s sad that you have to apologize for a harmless and innocent thing I find that braids should be loved by everyone other than when it is used in a rude way and not appreciated. As someone from the Caribbean, there is no such thing as braids or dreadlocks being ‘owned’ by a group of people. If you go to any of the islands, you will see braids on all different types of people. Sharing traditions should be a good thing, sharing cultures should be a good thing. For sure it doesn’t matter if she wears breads, but if she were to wear extensions then it’d be seen as culture appropriation. Braids that deal with extension comes with a ton of history. Ofc I wish some of us wouldn’t point to everything as culture appropriation, but when it comes to extensions I’m your braid specifically, it’s an issue.

Just here to Point Out the Cultural Appropriation bit... no braids or anything really cannot be cultural appropriation. Culture was meant to be shared and to bring people closer, not to be a cause of hate and divide them further. African right here, we loooove people trying our culture. When my Mom was younger (living in Congo) she had loooots of white European friends. She used to braid their hair and show them how to dress in "Pagne". They used to love it and everyone had a great time!

Real cultural appropriation is when people, influencers, companies etc. use aspects from ours or other cultures inappropriately, for personal gain, by stereotyping, exploiting or disrespecting. And that’s straight up not okay.

The only problem people have is when they do it as if their starting a new trend for example Kim K and most YT influencers who do them for the trend. Lots of cultures had/have braids. It's a hairstyle, not a culture unless you specifically went with a cultural style and tried to claim it as your own, do not apologize for just wearing a hairstyle. The world is a mixture of cultures already so cultural appropriation should really only be about individuals claiming they made something they didn't. Stop apologizing and live life. I mean if people actually did research they'd be surprised at the amount of different cultures effect a lot of what we say and do. The typical American wedding ceremony for example involves several different cultural traditions and pagan rituals. Just stop apologizing. It's getting ridiculous and I'm a black lady. Especially in Mexico since those braids were probably done by a native that takes pride in their work as well as got paid for their services.
