This long video showcased many battles, and each one showed how fickle morale was. This had always been so with warfare, it's just fascinating seeing it strung together, repeating each time.

The losing side of a battle may still have tons of troops capable of fighting, but if the men see they're getting flanked or attacked from the rear, it was over. Nobody wants to get surrounded, pincered, etc. Guys will bolt and run.

Also in the time period all this took place, the Roman Republic was a steamroller. From the end of the Second Punic War and in the years after, which includes the conquest of Greece, the Legions carved out out an empire.

In addition, you can see how as the power of Rome grew, its diplomacy in dealing with the Greeks lost a lot of finesse and resorting more quickly to blunt force.

It could not have been a good time to have lived in Greece or Asia Minor at this time. Especially in Greece with the nonstop fighting. I lost track how many times Rome had to dispatch armies into Greece.

An extremely well made video, it shows how badly divided the Greek world was at that age. Instead of cheerfully uniting to face the might of Rome, they still quarreled among themselves. 300 hundred years ago the city states barely managed to come to reason and unite against the Persian invasion, only to engage in a bloody civil war which was fought between Sparta and Athens. That’s the curse of Greece ( treachery from within and civil war, after a victory over a foreign enemy). The same pattern was later repeated in 1821 during the Greek war of independence against the Ottoman Empire, after the first 2 successful years, the leaders of the revolution turn against each other and begun fighting among themselves in a bloody civil war over the leadership of the newly formed Greek state, while the turks and Egyptians were planning a massive response. The Greek state was barely saved due to the intervention of Britain France and Russia. Even in modern times, right after the defeat of nazi Germany, the spectre of treachery and civil war once again appeared over Greece when communist party fought against the democratic army. The results were thousands more casualties on a war fought between Greeks. After all my country has suffered, we can still see signs of endless pride and resentment between different factions of that same nation, ready to boil down into open confrontation should a pretext presents itself. Unfortunately there can be no lasting unity amongst people like this.

Don't forget the vast majority of battles happened outside the city. Today's war is much worse, sadly. The people were generally speaking not very well threated anyway so not much changed if your leader lost.

I never covered the Roman/Greek wars at school so really appreciated your production from Kings and Generals , thank you. I will need a second viewing to fully appreciate the content . I was not aware that during the punic wars Rome had to contend with the Macedonian threat in the Adriatic , what an incredible power Rome had become requiring administrative power and communications in an age of horses and wooden ships .

I love this kind of historical telling. So many histories leave out the geopolitical context surrounding a war is refreshing to see this information in a broader context. I'm well familiar with the basics of the second Punic war however this is the first history I've seen that included more context of the state of the Roman Republic and the surrounding lands.

I am impressed by Rome's diplomatic and aggressive strategies for dealing with the Macedonian Kingdom. It enabled them to achieve their regional political and economic interests. It's channels like this that remind you how well Total War games translate to B roll footage and as visual aides for historical battles. I still remember Decisive Battles on the History Channel using the original Rome: Total War to this effect, and I think it got me into strategy games as a kid. I feel like this is a kind of spiritual successor, and I wish they'd bring that show back instead of 18 different reality shows. Still.....this isn't a bad substitute.

I've always been intrigued with history but, alas, all the names, facts and figures require a good memory, something I don't possess so history has always been a challenge, however the graphics and animation of this presentation allow me to appreciate the magnitude of ancient battles between Rome and Greece. How on earth did they manage to organise themselves over time and distance without modern communications ? It's all very well for Generals to make decisions but how did the troops manage to maintain cohesion and act decisively as a group in the heat and mayhem of battle ? Tens of thousands on each side ... can you imagine the noise and blood and guts ? What about logistics of food supply and animal care ? What about non-combatants, the growing and harvesting of food, women and children ? Negotiations between leaders separated by distance must have occured at a glacial pace. If we fast forward to the modern day the warmongering has stayed the same but the speed, hardware, communications, logistics and theatres of war have increased beyond belief. The future of mankind looks decidedly bleak, eh ?

Interesting that the Romans always allied themselves with Greek city states and used Greek soldiers while fighting other Greek city states. The Romans, with all their military might and strategic prowess, found themselves unable to subdue the Greeks without the aid of …other Greek soldiers.

It appears that the key to Roman success lay in their strategic habit of aligning themselves with Greek city-states, and leveraging the strengths of these brave soldiers in their battles with other Greek city-states.

Indeed, the Roman conquest of Greece can hardly be described as a pure Roman victory. Rather, it was a Greco-Roman conquest, with the Romans readily acknowledging their alignment with Greeks and use of Greek military might in many key battles that helped achieve their aims. Without such Greek alliances, the Roman legions may well have faltered in the face of resolute Greek resistance.

Thus, the confluence of Roman military might and allied Greek hoplite prowess created an unstoppable force that swept across Ancient Greece. Yet, the outcome may well have been entirely different had the Greek city states united against the Romans.

I still think that Alexander's legacy was not "buried" with Perseus. Indeed, on a flat field, nothing could stop a well disciplined phalanx. I think they could still have been used in some places and battles in Gaul to break through stubborn resistance. In each battle, the Romans would seem to have a stroke of luck and get around them.

So much information, really nice. Just a point, at 1:48:47, the event is not a solar eclipse, but a moon eclipse. And for the history, recently, people realized that the night before the Alesia battle (between romans and gauls), there was also a moon eclipse, which was taken as a bad omen by the gauls, and not by the romans. Proof that it helps to know a bit of astronomy :).

Back when I still played CK2, I had a Roman Empire file and the Greeks rebelled at least once during every new Emperor's reign. It became a rite of passage. No other people rebelled nearly as much as the Greeks. After every rebellion, I took more land away from the Kingdom of Greece. Somehow they'd get it all back and start the process over again. Eventually I learned to imprison the King of Greece before the Emperor/ress died to keep their heir from having another civil war.

I blame the school system rather than the individual teachers. I think most teachers would agree. Also its one thing to learn in the comfort of your own home, and another to learn in a place which you dont want to be, and having to sit with 30 people you may or may not like.

Time and time again we see the Greeks here initially outperforming the Romans in a straight fight despite always being outnumbered, but then the Romans somehow exploit a weakness in these Greek armies every single time. Superior soldiers are nothing compared to a superior general.

One of the things people bring up about Alexander that they admire is that they liked him leading from the front and into the battle. The drawback of not being behind is that it is harder for a commander to know where to send troops and support if they are in the middle of fighting. I think this would be one drawback of the Hellenistic Kingdoms vs. Rome. For example if Antiochus III at Magnesia, were in the back he would have seen that his left was in trouble and could have had reserves. Instead though he fought through on the right, by the time he received word that his left crumbled it was too late.
