@@VogonPoet67 "Move It On Over" and "Guitar Boogie" are "hillbilly boogie," which became popular in about 1945. Blues with some backbeat had been around in the '20s and '30s. Tampa Red had been playing guitar boogie in about 1940 -- and that wasn't rock and roll either. All the known rock and roll recordings made before mid-1949, such as "Rock The Joint" by Jimmy Preston and "Rock And Roll" by Wild Bill Moore, are by R&B artists. All. That sound was called "rockers" in Billboard in 1949 and Albennie "Rock And Roll" Harris was using that nickname in print that year, the year she recorded the rocker "Jump And Shout." Rockabilly was that rock and roll sound mixed with "hillbilly" (i.e. C&W), and the first known example of rockabilly is by Hardrock Gunter in 1950. Country music was mixed with rock and roll from 1950 onward, whenever it was that was rockabilly (that was the year Haley got interested in doing so too btw, and what he got interested in was e.g. "Rock The Joint" recreated as partly country), and rock and roll had been invented before 1950 by black artists, not country artists.

Elvis, in press conferences in the '50s, said rock and roll was invented by black artists. The nth myth that whenever something important happens white people must have been around too, as it were, was nurtured by the imagination of white writers in the '60s-'80s. But Elvis e.g. knew better.

The initial audience for the rock and roll sound was young black people who wanted to hear something new, which it was.

Tharpe recorded no rock and roll in the late '40s either -- and didn't even approve of sacrilegious jokes.

Rocket 88 is considered by most to be the first rock n roll song because it's the first song that uses distortion to affect the sound of the guitar. When they were driving to the studio to record, the guitar amp fell off the roof of the car, and they had to prop it up with wadded up newspaper, creating that buzz that you hear in the song.

The wiki on guitar distortion references the play of Willie Kizart, a member of Turner's Kings of Rhythm, on this recording as one of the earliest examples of distortion. The damaged but functional amp was said to be stuffed with newspapers to keep the speaker in place. The resulting buzz "distorts" the sound, but this sort of treatment is not distortion any more than a theremin is the equivalent of a 1967 Moog synthesizer.
I do not claim to having a greater knowledge of guitar distortion or its complete history than that wiki. I did know a 1970s guitarist who built his own effects and tested the output with an oscilloscope. He could demonstrate how the level of distortion clipped and spiked the output wave at various points along the audible spectrum of the guitar (around 100Hz to 1000Hz). This is a geeky way to explain how distortion is an electrical effect that creates an audible one. Andres Segovia and Django Reinhardt could both play the hell out of an acoustic guitar but the only buzz either created was likely a low E string not properly fretted.

Dane Osborn see, where you are wrong is that it DOES, in fact, matter that he was among the first to literally help create a style. A style that is still very much relevant 70 years later. It doesn’t sound fresh today, I’ll give you that much, but it certainly is very much a general consensus amongst critics who know anything about what they’re talking about, that the fact that it was new when it was made, makes all the difference in the world. Matter of fact, the uniqueness, makes it artistically viable & is absolutely one of the major components of the quality of any piece of popular music. If I wrote a piece of music today that sounded very much like the Beatles, for example, with all of the amazing melodies that were present in their music, it shouldn’t be judged very highly. That is due to the fact that it would be derivative & a rehashing of a style that was done already. I respectfully disagree also with the fact that you don’t like the sound, because it is simply a matter of taste, but just because it doesn’t include all of the bells and whistles & modern production that today’s music has, doesn’t make it bad. You have to consider that the recording equipment of the day wasn’t nearly as sophisticated as today’s.

Although Jackie Brenson was on the cover, it's Ike Turner we hear. Ike recorded it later with his King's Of Rythm which was the same band without Jackie. Was it the first Rock and Roll song? Fats Domino was making records for jukeboxes in 1948 that were later classified as Rock and Roll. The first song to have "Rock" in the title was Rock Around The Clock. So that's why I feel Chuck Berry actually created what became Rock and Roll. Before, as Fats said, it was Rythm and Blues. Alan Freed coined the term Rock and Roll in 1954 when Rock Around The Clock hit the charts. Etta James used "roll" as in Roll With Me Henry. The "rock" was added by Alan Freed. Chuck Berry created the Rock and roll sound that's been used by Jeff Beck, Keith Richards and the Beatles. The driving guitar sound. Each of these guys credited Chuck as a major influence. There was nothing like it before and it inspired Clapton and the British Invasion groups. The Beatles even recorded Roll Over Beethoven. So did ELO. Read a little rock history before you start your half-assed rants. Life Magazine had a special issue. See PBS' Rock And Roll The Early Days. In early 1951, B.B. King recommended Sam Phillips' services at Sun Records to the Mississippi-based band "Kings of Rhythm," led by a teenage Ike Turner. In the band’s haste to fix a flat tire the road trip to Memphis, one of their guitar amps fell out of the car's trunk and onto the pavement.

Upon arrival at Sun Studios, guitarist Willie Kizart plugged in the amp and got a horrible, fuzzy, distorted noise. The speaker cone of his amp seemed to have broken in the fall. The amp was shot and the group feared their shot at recording a song was over before it had even started.

Sam Phillips, however, had a different idea. Running to the diner next door, he grabbed some paper and stuffed it into the amp, giving it a new, unique sound, like a muffled saxophone bass. For Phillips, this wasn't just a quick fix, but in fact something better: something different.

When you listen to the the song widely hailed as rock and roll's first, "Rocket 88," you'll hear exactly what he created when he stuffed that amp with paper. A fuzzy rock sound that helped launch a genre.

Umm.. no, it is well known and understood that this was the first rock record and inspired Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis. The main factors that distinguish this R&B record as Rock and Roll were the accidental distortion of the guitar by the busted amp, and the stomping piano by Ike Turner.

I certainly never met the man. I wasn't even alive most of the years he was popular. By most accounts I've heard, though, Ike Turner was a lying, arrogant, abusive asshole. That doesn't mean he wasn't innovative or a contributing pioneer to rock & roll. His contributions to music, however, also don't make him any less of an asshole. It's an uncomfortable truth that both of those things can exist at the same time. Similar things can be said about Bill Cosby, Kevin Spacey, and several bus loads of other people who contributed great art to humanity but were an absolute nightmare for many who came into personal contact with them. That's just a reality that we live with. The key is to, if you appreciate the persons contributions, try to have the respect for the lives they scarred and sometimes ruined by celebrating the art without unnecessarily putting the jerks responsible for it on too high a pedestal. It's not easy, but I hope we find an acceptable way to do that. I have a feeling we'll have to be doing that more and more often as time goes on.

Ike Turner was only 19 when he wrote and recorded this song in 1951 with his Kings of Rhythm band. The saxophonist in Ike's band was Raymond Hill, he's the father of Tina Turner's eldest son.

If you think they shouldn’t be there then neither should the Beetles, they’re the real founders of pop. Rock existed before them. As far as KISS , I will never forget their co headline with Aerosmith. KISS was first and were incredibly good and then came Aerosmith and by the time they were 5 songs into their set roughly 40 percent of the audience was leaving and a lot of others weren’t paying much attention. I love Aerosmith but they or any other rock band could never follow KISS on stage and that includes Led Zepplin . Plus they draw much larger crowds overseas than Aerosmith ever has. I lived nearly 8 years in Germany and KiSS is huge in Europe,still are.

Hank Williams "Move it on Over" was recorded and released in 1947 and it's Rock n Roll. Ike was about 13/14 years old at that time. There's a few other rock n roll songs before this but certainly not many. Ike was a true Giant and should always be given credit and a pioneer of Rock N Roll. He among an elite small group of artists responsible for the creation of Rock n Roll. Hank Williams was really the 1st and his songs are still being played at Rock Concerts to this day. With that being said Ike and others who followed kept building on what Hank Williams did in 47. If you give it a listen you will hear everything is there and it's rock n roll at its earliest date on a record....we will never know who the real 1st was only the 1st to chart a record. Hank was 1st and I'm sure he wasn't the 1st to play it, just the 1st to have a record on the charts.

When I was a kid in the late 50s and 60s we had a 55' Rocket 88 2dr h/t. I thought the car was cool then especially when my father had the skirts on it. Most of the time he had them off because he said they were hard to put on and off when having to change the tire. Before that he had a 52' Rocket 88 but I don't remember that one, just seen pictures of it.

Happy birthday to the legendary Ike Turner who was born November 5, 1931. B.B. King said Ike was the best bandleader he ever saw. Ike played piano on his early records. Ike also backed Howlin' Wolf and Otis Rush. Ike a talent scout for Sun Records and Modern Records. He discovered and recorded many legendary blues musicians. Little Richard said he was inspired to play piano after he heard Ike's intro on "Rocket 88." Little Richard wrote the introduction to Ike's autobiography. A documentary film exploring his career is overdue.

There is plenty of boogie woogie in this song goes back to the 1920s. Pine Top Smith's Boogie woogie goes back to 1928, Albert Ammons & Pete Johnson, Louis Jordan 1946 Caldonia, Albinia Jones 1948 Hole in the wall, Shake rattle and roll 1954, and I am certain that there are many more older ones.

1951. I thought it was 1950 at first. It is one of the first of rock & roll music. Even in the 1940s is the early form of rock & roll music and it is available in 33, 45, and 78 rpm records. Even Boogie Woogie music is getting to be a rock & roll music and even the teenagers of the 1940s is popular.

While "Rocket 88" is often acknowledged as the first rock and roll recording, I would suggest tha "Caldonia" recorded in 1945 by Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five may actually be the first. If you listen to both, the similarities are obvious.

Vocals are straight-up rock n roll, the rhythm still has the shuffle blues feel that only a year later or so would turn into the less swinging but more propulsive 4/4 rock beat. Rock n roll is basically jump blues without the swing. Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Bill Haley and yeah, Elvis were really the first true rock n roll performers who were doing music that was a clean break from the blues while still being influenced by it. Rocket 88 is about as close to rock n roll while still being jump blues as you can get, thanks to the vocals and loud guitar.

That's my take on it.

Marcelo Daneri Pérez Sure, many white kids listened to Black R&B records, but the vast majority of people were introduced to Rock ‘n’ Roll through three men: Elvis Presley, Pat Boone, and Bill Haley & the Comets. These three guys took C&W musical standards and re-arranged them with an R&B beat and Black-sounding vocals, along with Gospel, which influenced namely back-up singers, like the Jordanaire quartet often heard on the Elvis records. What made them different is that they were white, so they were able to gain more traction, especially in the south, among specialty and C&W radio stations. White kids listening the black music is an exaggerated and uncommon phenomenon, and only occurred in diverse cities like Chicago, New Orleans, Memphis, and other regional recording centers. The blacks laid the base, but the whites built the house, if you will. And in the end, it was cats like Elvis that solidified rock ‘n’ roll’s presence in a way that a Chuck Berry or Little Richard wouldn’t ever be capable of. And furthermore, if anything, Elvis’ acceptance by the mass-media in 1957-1958 allowed mass desegregation in the music industry, as it became harder for companies and labels to determine what racial group was buying what record. This problem became apparent enough that Billboard had great trouble in compiling their R&B weekly charts by 1962, because they couldn’t figure out who was buying what. And it just couldn’t have been done without Elvis. Really, you should be applauding Elvis, the man who was so controversial, yet blazed such a wide path almost single-handed my. He’s king for a reason, and no race, sex, social status, etc., nothin’ can change that. Elvis is Elvis

Chuck Berry and Little Richard and Bill Hailey I guess were the original creators of rock, and then Elvis popularized, and brought a swing to Rock. Almost like a "hardcore" aspect to it. I had a 1956 Olds 88. I hit another car which ignored a stop sign, There was no mark on my bumper but his side was smashed. I just recalled that my family had an earlier Olds,maybe a 1953 Rocket 88.

I love everything about classic rock, and old rock and roll. I though do miss, even if I am only 13, the dancing. It looked like so much fun. I wish I could find a place where they played said music and danced, I would definitely go there.
