Harry's Reasons
v.Spy v.Spy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Gargoyles are watching
Watching and waiting
He's hearing voices
He isn't frightened

Sour lemon
Is emanating
You better watch it
It's going to get you
I see the needle
In a Hundred Haystacks
I see the Haystacks waiting
Why don't you change?
How long will this
Game play out

He's met his match
Journey to jail
What really matters
Better off in hell

His brains in tatters
Of his own choosing
Careers in ruins
It doesn't matter

If you don't fight it
You are a loser
I see the needle
In a Hundred Haystacks
I see the Haystacks waiting

Why don't you change?
How long will this
Game play out

Gargoyles are watching
Watching and waiting
He's hearing voices
He isn't frightened
Sour lemon
Is emanating

You're hard headed, so cold blooded
One is too many, three's not enough
Why don't you change?

In a Hundred Haystacks
I see the Haystacks waiting...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Harry's Reasons" by v.Spy v.Spy are rich with symbolism and convey a sense of paranoia, self-destruction, and the consequences of one's actions. The song begins by introducing the imagery of gargoyles watching and waiting, which represents a constant, ominous presence in Harry's life. Despite hearing these voices and feeling their effect, Harry is not scared. This suggests that he may have grown numb or indifferent to the pressures and dangers surrounding him.

The mention of a sour lemon emanating indicates a negative energy or aura that surrounds Harry. It could signify the sour consequences of his choices or the negative consequences that await him. The lyrics warn that he needs to be cautious because those consequences are inevitable and will catch up with him eventually. The line "I see the needle in a Hundred Haystacks" suggests that Harry is caught in a dangerous game or addiction, with the needle representing a dependency on something harmful.

The repeated question of "Why don't you change?" emphasizes the need for Harry to break free from his destructive patterns. The song wonders how long this destructive game will continue for him, urging him to find a way to alter his path before it's too late. The mention of Harry having met his match and facing a journey to jail implies that his actions have finally caught up with him. The lyrics suggest that what truly matters and what would be a better outcome for him may be found in hell, implying that he has reached a point of no return.

References to Harry's brain being in tatters and his career in ruins highlight the irreversible damage he has caused himself. Despite this, the lyrics assert that it doesn't matter to Harry anymore, suggesting a sense of apathy towards the consequences he has brought upon himself. The line "If you don't fight it, you are a loser" emphasizes the need for Harry to confront and change his behavior, as inaction would only lead to his downfall.

The final verse reiterates the presence of the watching gargoyles, suggesting that Harry is constantly being observed and judged. The lyrics imply that Harry is hearing voices, which could symbolize his subconscious guilt or inner turmoil. Despite this, he remains unfrightened, indicating a sense of resignation or acceptance of his situation. The repetition of the question "Why don't you change?" emphasizes that this is the key to breaking free from his destructive cycle.

In conclusion, "Harry's Reasons" by v.Spy v.Spy uses vivid imagery and symbolism to express themes of paranoia, self-destruction, and the consequences of one's actions. It urges Harry to confront his destructive behavior and change before it's too late. The song paints a bleak picture of a character whose choices have led to ruin, highlighting the need for self-reflection and transformation.

“The Spies”, without a doubt, one of the best bands ever to come out of a very tasty era in music. I have wicked memories of seeing them live with Midnight Oil, and INXS. Bloody Legends!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gotta Love Aussie Rock !!!!!!!!!!!
