From the stage to the studio
Since its beginnings, YEW has always been all about the raw energy that sparkles on stage. In the studio, things were less obvious, less clear. As if, in music there were two opposite paths in the creative process that could hardly interact with each other. But these different ways, and none the less, do bring their own experiences. In 2013, The Fall, the first album with the current line up (seven members), delivered an amazing duo with Arno (Between Up and Down) and was followed by a tour in France, Switzerland, England and the big festivals in French-speaking Belgium (Dour, BSF, Couleur Café, Ardentes, …). On the musical front, The Fall was the first step of a turning point for the band. It was a rebirth, YEW grew up between rock and traditional music. There were many ways to explore and the possibilities were open. The Fall left the band at a crossing point.
After a much-needed break, they set up on a path, leaving the other options behind. From this path emerged BAM BAM BAM. The challenge on this album was to be able to channel the dynamics of a show, to bring the energy and spontaneity of the live instant inside the studio. The tracks were then recorded during two sessions with an audience. A truly unique experience. An instant that stands somewhere between the unstoppable ticking of time and the suspended eternity of a studio recording. From the passion to the contemplation, the songs bear the testimony of what happened on that single day. This is BAM BAM BAM. A record rooted in the basics of recording. A record that found a way to keep a sincerity that is often lost in the recording process, by avoiding to get either stuck in time or rushing it. Finding the inner rhythm of the album, and mainly recreating the Live feeling, and shaping it in a way that its “soul” could be heard through the microphones, and finally get fixed forever.
From the studio to the stage
The band will perform this new material with two different formulas. The first is the good old classic tour (on stage, in front of the crowd with the raw energy of live shows), and the second one, in that place between the two worlds that they found during the recording sessions. A much more intimist and solemn way to perform. A unique experience, as much for the audience as for the musicians, that the band is setting up to share with as many people as can be. This second way of touring will be held in parallel with the first one, and will seek to explore new places, bringing a live show in places that you’d never think could host such a thing (a live show). These live shows will be almost silent. No amplifications, no PA, no stage... The experience of the show will be through headphones only. With the band, at the center of the place, and a limited crowd (around 100 people) around them. This is the process found in the studio, and the band is bringing it on the road. If at first the process may seem binding and secluding, this is not the case. This is another experience of listening. A collective sharing where the immersion is full and immediate. The device of the headphones, broadcasting the show for everyone, acts like a gateway to a place where everybody goes through the same experience. Music then becomes the one and only bond between people: the audience, the band, sharing the experience altogether.
