Shimada got a break in show business at four years old when she was scouted at Yoyogi Park. She briefly became a commercial model until her dad pulled the plug on her model career. Ten years later she auditioned for the television anime Pants no Ana 2 ~Kahei Hatake de Input~ but didn't win. Shimada didn't give up and auditioned for the magazine Momoco a year later and won.
She made her debut as an idol in 1986 under the stage name Shimada Nami and released her debut single "Glass no Gensoukyoku" in 1987 under the label Columbia Records. She didn't break the charts until her third single, "Free Balloon", became a hit.
In 1990, she retired from the idol business and later became a radio personality and a DJ. In 2007, Shimada started to write and host her own online radio show about the soul music and jazz genres.
