Turn down the bed
Turn down these voices
Inside my head
Lay down with me
Tell me no lies
Just hold me close
Don't patronize
Don't patronize me
I can't make you love me if you don't
You can't make your heart feel
Somethin' it wont
Here in the dark,in these final hours
I will lay down my heart
And feel the power if you wont
No you wont
Cause I can't make you love me
If you don't
I'll close my eyes
Then I wont see
The love you don't feel
When your holdin' me
Morning will come
And I'll do whats right
Just give me till then
To give up this fight
And I will give up this fight
I can't make you love me if you don't
You can't make your heart feel
Somethin' it wont
Here in the dark,in these final hours
I will lay down my heart
And feel the power if you wont
No you wont
Cause I can't make you love me
If you don't
In their song "I Can't Make You Love Me," Boyz II Men use powerful imagery and emotive vocals to explore the heartbreak of love unrequited. The singer of the song is pained by the fact that they cannot control their lover's feelings, no matter how deeply they yearn for them to return their love. The opening lines of the song suggest a desperation to escape from the overwhelming thoughts and emotions that are consuming the singer, as they ask to "turn down the lights" and "turn down these voices / inside my head." The stripped-back instrumentation and the soft, soulful harmonies of the group lend an intimate and vulnerable quality to the song, further underscoring the singer's raw emotional state.
As the song progresses, the singer lays bare their desire for their lover to reciprocate their feelings, asking them to "lay down with me, tell me no lies" and to "just hold me close, don't patronize." Yet, despite their pleas, the singer acknowledges that they cannot force someone to love them if they don't feel the same way. This realization is evident in the chorus, where they sing "I can't make you love me if you don't / You can't make your heart feel somethin' it won't." The song's title is a poignant reminder of the powerlessness that comes with unrequited love.
The final lines of the song suggest a bittersweet acceptance of the reality of the situation. The singer knows that they must let go of their hopes for a love that will never be returned, and they find solace in the knowledge that they did all they could. They sing, "I'll close my eyes, then I won't see / The love you don't feel when you're holdin' me / Morning will come and I'll do what's right / Just give me till then to give up this fight." These lines indicate that the singer understands that it is time to move on, even if their heart is still yearning.
