Loyal Brave True
Christina Aguilera Lyrics
War is not freedom
Over my shoulder
I see a clearer view
All for my family
Reason I'm breathing
Everything to lose
Should I ask myself in the water
What a warrior would do?
Tell me, underneath my armor
Am I loyal, brave and true?
Am I loyal, brave and true?
Losing is easy
Winning takes bravery
I am a tiger's fool
Out in the open
No one to save me
The kindest of whispers are cruel
Should I ask myself in the water
What a warrior would do?
Tell me, underneath my armor
Am I loyal, brave and true?
Am I loyal, brave and true?
Cold is the morning
Warm is the dream
Chasing the answers
'Til I can't sleep
Will I be stronger
Or will I be weak
When you're not with me?
Who am I without my armor?
Standing in my father's shoes
All I know is that it's harder
To be loyal, brave and true

@Sophia Will Oh, I know. And I'm really not surprised. That's why I had said in my reply to the original commenter: "I guess that is to be expected."
I cannot force you or anyone to like something that you don't like, so I'm not going to try to change your mind. But we people that DO like Niki Caro's movie, should be able to enjoy and give support to her film safely and freely, and NOT be met with scorn and contempt and bullying and strong opposition from people that don't like the movie.
If you people don't like it, then we will respect your verdict. But respect is a two-way street: you people have to accept, too, that we are fans and supporters of Niki Caro's movie, and you should not try to gang up on us or laugh at us just because we genuinely like a movie that you hate.
Respect is reciprocative: you have to give it in order to receive it. So I don't care if so many people hate Niki Caro's movie. I'll still choose to see and focus on the "positives" or good qualities of her "Mulan" picture, rather than actively seek out all of the bad stuff and imperfections and fails in her movie, and then waste time complaining about all of its problems.
I'd rather be a nurturer and supporter. I'd rather say to someone, "You can do this! You can succeed," than be a complainer and hater.
Complainers are rarely happy or satisfied because for them, in their perspective, NOTHING is ever good enough.

Meu destino está nessa guerra
Eu já consigo ver
Minha família é tudo o que eu tenho
Fonte do meu viver
Minha imagem verdadeira
Continua a perguntar
Se existe na guerreira
Lealdade pra lutar
Lealdade pra lutar
Toda vitória exige coragem
É o que vai te salvar
É solitária essa viagem
Escolha quem vai escutar
Minha imagem verdadeira
Continua a perguntar
Se existe na guerreira
A coragem pra lutar
A coragem pra lutar
Minha alma gelada
Quer mais calor
Busca respostas por onde for
Quero ser forte mesmo na dor
Mas não sei quem sou
Por detrás da minha imagem
Eu só quero encontrar
Lealdade e coragem
E a verdade pra lutar

Theres so much effort put into this video, from the lyrics to the video itself.
1. 2 decades back Christina sang Reflection, and now they get her to sing this new song, with references to Reflection in the lyrics "Should I ask myself in the water?"
2. To those who are wondering what are the words the "ribbons" / brush strokes are forming, its 忠 zhōng (0:25) 勇 yŏng (0:49) 真 zhēn (1:40) which means loyal, brave and true. These 3 words are also carved on Mulan's sword in the movie. (1:26) The "ribbons" are sashes commonly used in ancient chinese clothings and even more so for females as they drape long sashes of cloth on their arms (similar to how Christina have long sashes draped over her arms). Brush strokes represent Chinese calligraphy. The words in this video are written in calligraphy style as well.
3. 孝 xiào (2:10) means filial piety, a value Mulan embodies when she took her father's place and went to war. In the past, this action would be akin to deceiving the emperor, which is punishable by death of THE ENTIRE FAMILY. Which is also the reason why Mulan's father did not chase after her when he realise she took his place. Therefore...
4. the lyrics "All for my family, Reason I'm breathing, Everything to lose" and "Out in the open, No one to save me". She really would dead meat if she gets caught in the army camp LOL.
5. In Chinese history, there was a military general named Xu Chu who is very strong and cunning at warfare but actually is a simple and honest person underneath the armour. So he was nicknamed "Tiger Fool" by his men. Just like how Mulan is soft underneath her tough exterior. Therefore the lyrics "I am a tiger's fool" (1:16).
6. Females in the ancient chinese society are bounded by very strict rules, so much so that speaking to a man who is not a family member could mean judgement from society. Back then reputation means everything for a female. Therefore the lyrics "The kindest of whispers are cruel" (1:27) because even though she is hailed as a hero, the reality would be that her reputation as a female would be probably ruined because she spent years in an army camp with so many men. Even though she knows that, she still chose to serve in place of her father. Another interpretation could be during the matchmaking, she was not able to fit into the role of a "good wife" but chose to be herself anyway even though she knows people will talk.
7. 2:23 is a phoenix emblem. Phoenix in Chinese mythology is the ruler of all birds (note: one of the character that Mulan is up against is a witch that can shapeshift into a bird), it is rare and beautiful. In the past, only with the permission of the emperor can one use dragon and phoenix emblems. In fact it is another representation of "yin" and its counterpart is a dragon that represents "yang". In Chinese culture, Yin is female while Yang is male. In the movie, the phoenix is sent by her ancestors to help Mulan in her journey. It is also a reference to the animated series where the emperor said "The flower that blooms in adversity is the rarest and most beautiful of all." However, no matter how important a person someone is (even the emperor, therefore at 2:12 underneath 孝 xiào is a silhouette of the chinese palace), they should remain filial to their parents which is the core of chinese culture. Therefore at the centre of the emblem is the word 孝 (refer to point 3).
8. Traditional chinese instruments are incorporated in this song as well. 0:01 you can hear the chinese drum (aka tanggu) and 0:10 you can hear the chinese zither (aka guzheng)
TLDR: Song & Video has tons of Chinese cultural representation & throwbacks to the previous version of Mulan.
You're Welcome.
EDIT: after writing such a long piece of info with 8 points people are nitpicking the fact that Christina is not the one who sang in the movie its Lea Salonga. Don't get me wrong, I love Lea Salonga and her work, I think she is underated tbh. But even though Christina did not sing in the movie its a fact that she did release "Reflection" as a single. Period. People are so hard to please these days smh

I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS <3 All about the artistry. Chinese characters drawn with the stroke of martial arts movements, Christina being intertwined with the cloudy scenery. So glad to see my favorite singer of all time back to her Disney roots and singing for Mulan more than two decades later!!
rudolph mcneill
@mehr poddar no. Her songs were versions of the songs sung by the actors during the movie. Played during the ending credits I believe. You know how Disney gets famous singers to redo thematic songs from the movie? Like "When You Believe" by Whitney and Mariah. Two of the characters sang that during the movie.
Amber Patoc
@RKO29 Also the song,"Part of Me" by Katy Perry suits Mulan,(When you watched the music video and listen to the meaning of lyrics,u know)
