Loyal Brave True
Christina Aguilera Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

War is not freedom
Over my shoulder
I see a clearer view

All for my family
Reason I'm breathing
Everything to lose
Should I ask myself in the water
What a warrior would do?
Tell me, underneath my armor
Am I loyal, brave and true?
Am I loyal, brave and true?

Losing is easy
Winning takes bravery
I am a tiger's fool

Out in the open
No one to save me
The kindest of whispers are cruel

Should I ask myself in the water
What a warrior would do?
Tell me, underneath my armor
Am I loyal, brave and true?
Am I loyal, brave and true?

Cold is the morning
Warm is the dream
Chasing the answers
'Til I can't sleep
Will I be stronger
Or will I be weak
When you're not with me?

Who am I without my armor?
Standing in my father's shoes

All I know is that it's harder
To be loyal, brave and true

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Christina Aguilera's song Loyal Brave True explore the internal struggles of a soldier who must confront their own courage and loyalty on the battlefield. The first stanza establishes that the singer of the song is a fighter who has a significant amount to lose, indicating that family or loved ones are their primary motivation for engaging in the conflict. The soldier also acknowledges that war is not liberating in nature, as the prospect of freedom is often muddled by bloodshed and destruction. The second stanza delves deeper into the soldier's trepidation regarding battles, highlighting the predicament of choosing between losing and winning. The fighter is portrayed as a tiger's fool, exposing their vulnerabilities when confronting their own mortality. The kindest whispers are even cruel, further emphasizing the stakes of a battlefield, where enemies are faceless, and survival is dictated by wit and sheer luck.

The chorus repeats an introspective question, emphasizing the crucial decision between loyalty, bravery, and truth. Underneath the armor of the warrior, the character questions their worthiness and preparedness for conflict. The idea of water and asking oneself what a warrior would do symbolizes introspection and self-discovery. The third stanza portrays the emotional turmoil of a soldier driven by their dream for a better world. However, the challenges of war are so intense that it affects a soldier's sleep. They question their own strength and anticipate their fear, resulting in a constant internal battle.

Overall, the lyrics of "Loyal Brave True" highlight the difficulties and emotional turmoil that comes with being a soldier. As much as courage is required for a person to fight and protect their loved ones or beliefs, internal loyalty, bravery, and truthfulness are equally necessary in war.

@Sophia Togia I haven't seen Niki Caro's movie yet, so I can't really say for sure if her movie is good or bad. All I want to say here, is that there are SO MANY people today, who would rather CHOOSE to be negative and toxic and unthankful, rather than be genuinely kind and welcoming and compliant (or amenable).

Most people, or a LOT of people, would rather complain and complain and be angry, rather than cheer and be happy and root for the success of something or someone.

And just to remind you, liking movies is very similar to liking Art: it is all SUBJECTIVE, meaning just because you don't like or didn't enjoy a certain book or movie or song, does NOT mean that the next person also won't like that same book or movie or music.

I had seen articles on the Internet where it was reported that a lot, NOT all, but a lot of professional and big-name film critics had a positive response or a positive review of Niki Caro's "Mulan" movie.

If they liked the movie, who am I to say or to insist that they are wrong? Does it make them "less" of film critics, or are they deserving of rejection and ridicule, if they say that they like the movie, while many of the common movie-goers say that they hate it?

But anyway, in the end, I wouldn't want to be like so many of the people today, who ------ when they don't like something ------ would announce and try to influence others that that thing that they don't like is just a piece of hot garbage, and not worthy of spending your time and money on.

Because again, liking something is a pretty subjective personal experience. Just because you don't like it, is NOT a guarantee that other people won't or don't like it.

And the people that DO like it, are not stupid people for liking what YOU don't like.

Maybe they can see something about it that you simply do not see.

Meu destino está nessa guerra
Eu já consigo ver
Minha família é tudo o que eu tenho
Fonte do meu viver

Minha imagem verdadeira
Continua a perguntar
Se existe na guerreira
Lealdade pra lutar
Lealdade pra lutar

Toda vitória exige coragem
É o que vai te salvar
É solitária essa viagem
Escolha quem vai escutar

Minha imagem verdadeira
Continua a perguntar
Se existe na guerreira
A coragem pra lutar
A coragem pra lutar

Minha alma gelada
Quer mais calor
Busca respostas por onde for
Quero ser forte mesmo na dor
Mas não sei quem sou

Por detrás da minha imagem
Eu só quero encontrar
Lealdade e coragem
E a verdade pra lutar

Christina Aguilera's such a legend. Just look at her, you can definitely feel the force she's bringing out - as a human being and as the singer [for Mulan] - simply because she has embodied it ever since. She looks like a fine red wine, and so does her voice!

and like a fine red wine, tastes better when it ages :)

This song gives me chills, and of course Mulan is one of my all time favorite movies. I could watch it all day and every night and still never get enough.

Victoria Madridano

@Izzy Bee
Which "Mulan" are you referring to, though? The 1998 Disney animated original, or the 2020 live-action picture? I'm asking because I'm just curious.

Izzy Bee

@Victoria Madridano both of them

Victoria Madridano

@Izzy Bee Okay. Thanks a lot for your response to me! 😊 I'm happy that you have enjoyed the 2020 live-action "Mulan," because I had seen so many, SO MANY, people here online that bashed and crapped on and completely hated Niki Caro's movie (Niki is the director of the live-action "Mulan"). So I'm glad that you say that you have a positive response or a positive regard to, not just the animated Mulan, but also the live-action Mulan. (She gets A LOT of hate and ridicule online, but I guess that is to be expected. Because most people today would rather grumble and complain and hate and spread negativity, rather than be encouraging and positive and supportive and thankful. Thanks again for your reply!) ☺

@Victoria Madridano Why should people be thankful and supportive for a bad movie?
