The Ring in Return
Coheed and Cambria Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Hello?
[Man]
Hello Apollo.
Where should I begin?
The opening exchange in the song "The Ring in Return" by Coheed and Cambria sets the tone for a narrative that is at once cryptic and emotionally charged. It seems that the singer is asking for guidance from a higher power (presumably Apollo, the Greek god of music and arts), but is unsure of how to begin. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for the struggles of an artist or someone grappling with their own creativity and identity. However, given the band's penchant for complex sci-fi storytelling, it's also possible that there is a more literal reading to this song that ties into their larger mythology.
As the song unfolds, we hear Claudio Sanchez's distinctive vocals intertwining with heavy riffs and intricate drumming. The lyrics are full of vivid imagery and abstract ideas, but there are a few recurring themes that stand out. For example, there are references to dreams ("In sleep I heard the ringing voices calling out"), death ("I'm all alone on this stage tonight, I'll never die"), and a sense of being lost or adrift ("My eyes are filled with curiosity, you think that you have power over me"). It's possible that the song is exploring the idea of what it means to be a creator, and how that role can be both empowering and difficult to navigate.
Overall, "The Ring in Return" is a powerful opening track that sets the stage for Coheed and Cambria's ambitious concept album. It draws on classic rock influences while infusing them with a sci-fi twist, and showcases the band's impressive musicianship and storytelling abilities.
