After the resoundingly success of "Casa no Campo" and "Águas de Mraço" in previous years, the then chairman André Midan asked Elis what she wanted and soon heard: "Record an album of songs by Tom Jobim ... with Tom Jobim."
Elis & Tom was recorded between February 22 and March 9, 1974, during four sessions in the MGM studio, in Los Angeles, with orchestra conductions by Bill Hitchcok. The choice of a studio in the U.S. has nothing do with the search for a better sound or better electronic engineering: after having proposed the project, it was required to go to Tom Jobim, because Tom could not disconnect from its commitments in the U.S. . A small group of Brazilians gone to California for, among things, "scare" the teacher. Tom Jobim believed that the project would be something great and was surprised to know that "the youth" would take the reins of the recordings.
Tom attended the first two days of recordings, making presence in 8 of the 14 original songs of the record. "We already had the project well closed," says Cesar. "When me and Elis were going to sleep, we used to think how this song would come to be nice, that otherwise could have such an arrangement and so...," he concludes. "We knew Tom from the nightlife, but we only started to strengthen the friendship when he offered "Águas de Março" for Elis, in 1971," says the musician. In 1974, Tom was 47, Elis, 28 and Cesar, 30.
