The album is considered a return to form after the band veered into mainstream alternative rock territory with the critically panned "Wild Mood Swings". According to vocalist and Cure founder Robert Smith "Bloodflowers" is the final installment in a trilogy of similar albums starting with "Pornography" (1982) and "Disintegration" (1989).
"Bloodflowers" was both a commercial and critical success, earning mainly positive reviews and managing to enter the US Billboard 200 chart at 16th place.
