Fathi was born in Alhodayda which lies on the coast of the Red Sea in Yemen. When he was eight, he became interested in lute instruments. At the age of twelve he became a brilliant artist in his school. He was affected by the most famous oud performers in both Yemen and other Arab countries of that period.
After finishing his preparatory studies, he joined the "High Institute of Arab Music" in Cairo. He has been awarded many prizes for being the best lute performer in many festivals all over the world. In London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, Fathi successfully performed his own oud compositions, Yemeni and Arabic songs, and Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez. He took part in the Arab Music Festival (1994, 1998) in the Cairo Opera House. He participated in the Arab oud Festival "Sultanate Oman" in 2005. Fathi participated in the Doha Festival in January, 2006. He was honoured in "Sanaa" in Yemen in 2004, and performed some of his own compositions for this occasion. He also took part in the Lyric Dubai Festival in 1998, the Lyric Nagran Festival in 2003, and the Ganadebia Festival in 2004.
